The Mid 50's throughout the 60's were the glory years of the American auto industry in what was designed and created, particularly when compared to what was made in all other in countries in the world. When you owned cars like this T-Bird you felt special driving down the street.

i LOVE these square birds. I was not that big of a fan of the early birds...but in 1958 -1960 models, that's when I really took notice of these cars. So nice...insides and out. Great detail on the video as always! I always learn something from the cars you feature...even though I've been liking these cars for years. Beautiful from every angle!, inside and out!

I have one. Mines a '68. Yeah, I would imagine these things would take a charger with a 440 on the high end as they came with 2.80 gears. The chargers more than likely a better performance gear. I swapped in a set of 3.25's from a truck center section of the same era. That woke that 429 right up on the low end. She'll melt the tires.

The Square Birds were unique, they offered a back seat and finally came in both a coupe and a convertible versus the 55-57 baby birds. One could even get a monstrous big block a 430 which produced 350 h.p. With dual quads and a hotter cam and better heads it produced almost 400 h.p.!!! The base engine for the Square Bird was a 300 h,p, 352. I loveall of the Birds from 55 through 66. Iconic beauties.

It has that cool and refreshing feeling this car has with those colors in and out. Now this car looked like brand new! I was just 2 years old when this car came out. I love the wings on the back the tail lights and the front grille it is just so cool. That 352 engine we had that in our 1965 Ford Country Sedan Wagon. A great engine very powerful but also was so hard on fuel. But this car looks like it just floats on air. The owner was so cool too! I am so anxious to see his convertible! Hi Lou, Another great video. This 1960 is in beautiful condition. The 58 and 59 were distinguishable with two rear lights on each side as apposed to the 1960 which had three. Although the baby birds 55, 56 and 57, were more popular with the purists, sales for the 1958 model year had tripled. The reasoning for the increase was the immediate appeal for a family of four to ride comfortably in style while maintaining the sporty appearance offered by the T bird. I must add one more comment. It must be refreshing for you when you read the positive comments from your viewers. They seem to collectively have a great deal of knowledge in regards to the vehicles you display in your videos. This also becomes most beneficial for yourself. Having this knowledge prior to the filming of one of your videos is certainly a plus. Take care Lou and stay healthy. Brian

Wow! I don’t recall seeing a ‘SquareBird” on your channel so I HAD to watch this. One of the most ridiculous, ambitious, risky, cartoonish, outrageously styled cars to ever emerge from Ford, and it hit the mark so well it immediately created the ‘Personal Luxury’ class of automobile, which by the mid-late 1970’s nearly 50% of new car sales were laying claim to. I love it. Lou your camera work has gotten so good, it can sometimes give conflict to an owners claims. As I recall, these LARGE ‘SquareBirds’ were full unit body construction, leaving many of them riddled with squeaks, flexing issues, rattles, as well as major rust out problems. Nowadays, more often than not the ‘restored’ examples, upon quick examination, under their shiny paint jobs, seem to hide a bubble gum, bondo, cave it, pave it and hide it approach to insanely expensive ‘proper’ repairs. Your fine camera work showed me an absolutely PERFECT example!! “Better Than New”’ is an insulting term, another way of saying “More Money Than Brains”. This car is IMO, best described as.., “Ford was showcasing their 1960 offerings at a NYC auto show, open to the public, all makes and models. Ford grabbed a Thunderbird off the assembly line, trimmed in the most attractive colors of the day (Thank you, Dennis! for NOT redoing it in red and white.) Ford then sends it to its paint and trim shops as a ‘show car special’, where it is thoroughly gone over, repaint to show car perfection, all interior and exterior trim checked for imperfections then lined up perfectly, checked for fit and finish. Finally detailed, it is sent off to the auto show to impress possible Ford customers. For a mere $4900, Ford will build one for you!” And if you’re lucky, be just as tight and look just as nice as ‘this’ one, lol. That’s a LONG way of saying thx to Dennis for preserving and displaying this car, as a true representation of what they looked like before they all rusted into the ground and became “restored”’ and re-imagined as “the ‘50’s - ‘60s” in which every car on the road has Kelsey-Hayes spokes, WIDE whitewalls, all painted red/white, black/white or pink with twin trunk antennas, glovebox tissue dispensers and those HIDEOUS continental kits hanging 8 feet off the rear bumper, factory installed of course, 1 of 1. Plus, back in ‘the good old days’ apparently over 50% of all cars had exhaust manifold leaks and poor carburetor tuning, plus dual exhausts and glasspacks to hide those sins. Forgive my sarcasm, it’s really all in good fun (mostly) lol. Beautiful car Dennis. I especially noted the perfect ‘sheen’ on the interior, the FLAWLESS anodized ribbed dash trim, and thank you! for finding one of the rarest of rare; a SquareBird WITHOUT the 1 of 1 awful looking continental kits. I’m not a T-bird guy, but if memory serves me the factory continental kit was 1 year, 1956, to alleviate the lack of trunk space in the ‘55 design. Ford themselves disliked the look of ‘the kit’ so much they actually redesigned and lengthened the trunk of the ‘57 so the spare could go back to live in it’s proper place: HIDDEN in the trunk. Most classic cars with ‘factory continental kits’ are actually wearing dealer installed aftermarket accessory kits. They should be immediately tossed in the trash with the ‘factory’ curb feelers. That’s what I did with my Stingray’s continental kit. No offense and thanks to ALL who are preserving our heritage, with or without their own take on it:) Individuality is always subject to criticism, but it should be celebrated as a representation of what makes The USA such a wonderful place. I’m currently ordering a set of American Racing wheels for my all original (mostly) lol, ‘72 350, 4 speed Stingray, BUT, no wide whites and no continental kit. Yet. Blasphemy, nonetheless. And it’s not red, it’s GREEN (yuck). And if Lou is actually still reading this mental episode of mine, he’s such a genuine guy and a car nut, soaking up every bit of info he can and recording it, passing it on.., doing the work of “the car ‘God’s’”. Thanks so much Lou, wishing you and yours good health always. And if you’re ever up in scenic Sussex, northern New Jersey, I’d be proud to be featured on your channel. Show you all the good and the bad (plenty of both) on my mostly original not hot rodded or upgraded to death Stingray, flip you the keys, I record your driving impressions. If you can handle that wicked (and gorgeous) RT/10, the ‘Vette will be a walk in the park. Thanks to Dennis as well. He and his beautiful T-Bird inspired me to write this, so blame him;)

Another great car from Dennis's collection. To me that was the second generation Thunderbird that was tweaked for all succeeding generations throughout the sixties and into the early seventies. To me that is the generation that defined the Thunderbird. Not the first generation of two seaters. I believe the very first Thunderbird I ever road in was either a 60 or a 59. I was in the first or second grade when Dr. Lee, one of my neighborhood friend's mother, gave us a ride to school on her way to the hospital. We had six of us kids piled into that car. Two in the front and four in the back. I think the One and only Thunderbird I got to drive was a 60. It was a 9 or 10 year old used car a friend had bought and let me drive it in the shopping center parking lot. I personally think Ford would have been more successful if they had built a Thunderbird in 2002 based on this model rather than the two seater model they did build.

Beautiful car. Technically the "Police Package" would have included the 360-horse 352HP engine which included a solid-lifter cam, special intake and exhaust manifolds, and raised compression from C0AE-D heads at 60cc instead of the standard C0AE-C heads at 73cc. This engine was standard in the Police Galaxie, but optional in the T-Bird. For general cruising purposes, the 300-horse in this car was probably a better choice.

Between this T'Bird and the 60 Chrysler 300F, these were two of US best looking cars right there. Looking at these brochures, which are probably very expensive in their own right due to their condition and rarity, both vehicles are luxury bankers hotrods. It's amazing that such socially conservative times produced some of US most expressive looking automotive sculptures. Thanks Lou :-)

I bought a '59 with my friend in 1975 for $100. We were only 16, so we couldn't even legally drive it. We thought we'd restore it, but sadly the project never got that far: money. inexperience and my mother wanting it out of the garage all converged and a year later I sold it to the friend who I subsequently lost touch with. About 5 years later, I saw the car on the street in New York City, in pretty much the same condition as when I sold it. I wish I had found a way to keep it. Back in the '70's, cars like this were practically given away. I always liked the 58-60 square birds over the 55-57 smaller ones.

Production of the 1960 Thunderbird Coupe was 80,938 and 1960 Thunderbird Convertible was 11,860. That was the highest sales until the cheaper mass market 1977 edition. The Squarebird created the personal luxury car. The Lincoln sourced 430 V-8 had 350 horsepower and is highly sought after today. Only 2,536 Thunderbirds with the manually operated sun roof were sold...so unpopular that this option did not reappear until 1969. Base price of the Coupe was $3755 but was so plain that buyers almost always added options. The big money today is in the rarer convertibles...especially the 1958 Convertible which is the Holy Grail of Squarebirds. The 1959 and 1960 Thunderbird Coupes are still common today and frequently appear for sale on Craigslist, but rarely as perfectly restored as this example. These 4-passenger Thunderbirds were very chic cars in the 1960s and were popular among upper class women who liked their manageable size. The Palomino interior of this example is probably rarer than a blue or white which was probably more common with blue paint. My favorite is the later 1961 Thunderbird.

Was air conditioning an option in the 1958/1960 model years?
@loucostabile11 ай бұрын
Hi David, A quick google search shared "What year did Ford offer air conditioning? Also new for 1955 was Ford's first factory installed air conditioner. This “Select Aire” option featured an integrated heater core and evaporator coil unit within the dash and cold air discharge vents located on top of the dash on either side of the radio speaker." Lou

I have a black 1960 T-Bird in my back yard covered with a fabric car cover and plastic tarp that I was going to restore, but I found I don't have the time or money to do it. The body and chrome are perfect, but the paint is peeling badly. It has the 352 V8 and factory 3 speed manual with overdrive. Someone installed a floor shit and small steering wheel many years ago. It runs good, but I haven't started it in a few years. Battery is toast, of course. One of these days I plan to uncover it and put it up for sale. I'll never restore it.

Hi Theo, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this Thunderbird, and I'm not sure where those fender skirts are for this car..... Lou
@rusty38314 жыл бұрын
Theo Schuurman - I believe fenderskirts were either on a different year or a different trim level. I know fenderskirts were available on mid to mid-late 1960’s model T-birds. But yes, I do believe you are somewhat correct though.
