The factory hood scoop looks sharp, as does the turned metal dash, and the sporty, yet simplistic, round tail lights that Ford would implement later on Galaxies and Fairlanes and Falcons. I'm an old Chevy guy but hats's off to owner - a rare factory performance T - Bird and true collectable. Way to go Lou and thanks!

Ok Lou, heres my story on the 57 T’Bird. A coworker of mine had a 65 Mustang. His father restored it for him when he got his Drivers License. His father also Restored Falcons and 57 T’Bird, which was his favorite car. One weekend Car Craft magazine came to Mesa AZ on their cross country tour of Cruising spots. My Co-Worker, Randall, wanted to go see what was happening but his transmission was broken. He ran a four speed in his 289 Mustang and broke a gear speed shifting it during a street race, so he called me and asked if I’d like to go with him. So he took his father’s pea green card convertible T’Bird out to Main in Mesa. We drove most of the way there, then pulled over and dropped the top. This was in December and it was pretty cold that night, so we drove along very slow in an effort to stay somewhat warm. When we stopped at 24th and Van Buren at a stop light, two hookers jumped in the car with us and Randall freaked out. We let them out a couple blocks down the road and continued on our way. When we hit Main Street, there was a van with the Car. Raft crew in it taking pictures of,.... Us! So Randal made a U-Turn giving them a full view. Well the next month and Randall’s Dad saw a Copy of Car Craft and decided to buy it, only when he read the article he couldn’t help noticing that the T’ Bird in that issue looked just like his. Luckily he didn’t make a connection and Randall didn’t get busted.

My 1957 Lincoln Premiere boasted 300hp, with it's large, 368cu engine...then again, that car weighed around 4600lbs, so it really NEEDED that 300hp! I once, 50 years ago, drove a friend's 56 T-bird. My lasting impression was, that the beautiful car handled a little bit sloppy, much like a larger car. But that was to be expected of cars from that era. Whatever...I would love to own this black beauty. The F code cars must be exceedingly rare--and also extremely expensive!

In 1964, at a quarter-mile track at which Chrysler factory representatives were demonstrating the new Hemi in time trials, I saw a 1957 F-Code T-Bird with a 411 rear end beat the Hemi by a nose. The 312 Y-block had been bored out but the cam, valve springs, etc., were factory original for the Paxton supercharger. The engine compartment was understandably cramped-and as shown in the video, the glass-bowl inline fuel filter had to mounted upside down because of the limited space.

This is a very very late car, built Nov 11, 1957 -- during the 1958 production year. These cars kept on being built because the 58 replacement car was not ready when it was supposed to be. They are still titled as 57 models though. (The same thing happened with the 69 Camaro, when the 70 model was not ready in time. This is why you see so many 69s.) Hence, there are more 57s around than 55 and 56. It also carries a trim deviation code, unique to 58 built cars. It carries a '6', indicating that it has a porthole top as original equipment. A solid top would have carried a '7' on the trim tag. This is truly a beautiful car.

Oh Lou, Bird Dog, really? Take my wife please LOL. On to the car, I always learn something from Ken's collection. I did not know the supercharger was an option much less at the jaw-dropping price of $340. Another interesting item on the invoice was the last item for gas and 10 pts of oil at what appears to be $5.72 LOL. There is no question that visually this car is stunning and from a performance standpoint it seems to have everything Ford could offer on a T-Bird in 1957. I have one question though, where was the air intake for the supercharger? It appeared to possibly be in the wheel well but I really couldn't tell. I really admire Ken, he has much more restraint/maturity than me. I would be on that supercharger :-). Another great car from Ken's fantastic collection. Thank you both for sharing this with us.
@loucostabile4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, When you're around cars like this, the learning is high when they are this rare. Seems the "hose" to intake air snakes behind the engine, so I'm guessing it takes it from under the car. I agree, if I had this car I'd be hauling all the time :-) My pleasure sharing, and you're welcome, Lou

WOW!!! My dad always thought a 55 T-Bird was great, and the 57 can't be too far behind in that ranking. First Ford engine I've ever seen with the distributor on the wrong end of the motor, but the hood opens the wrong way to so it is a win win. I'll bet that T-bird left most everything in the dust. I can now see why everyone wanted one. Nice car :)

Great bird-Who doesn't like a vintage bird? Lou: No masks or distancing during the pandemic? Hope you guys stay healthy...
@ChrisfromGeorgia4 жыл бұрын
It's a Scamdemic, not a Pandemic. Does Coronavirus exist? Yes. If you get a chance, look at the box the mask comes in. It clearly states that it does not protect you from Coronavirus. I'm not saying this to belittled anyone, it just makes me sad that the powers that be have scared people to death with this crap they are spewing out constantly. Take care and live for this day! Peace

Lou, how many of the 196 “F” birds were made with the “right amount of pedals”? Also, don’t know if you noticed…two different Thunderbird logos used in ‘57; the ones on the nose and trunk and the newer one on the horn button.

@@loucostabile My dad had one of each of the years, '55-'57. His '56 had a 3 spd/OD and was purchased new by his father-in-law (1st marriage), who was a chief surgeon. As a wealthy man, he had a factory "E" bird set up installed at the dealership when this became available in 1957...along with a HD clutch, beefed up gears, etc. My dad bought the car when Gene bought a new '62 Jaguar XKE. Gene always regretted buying the Jag...especially when he took it to the dealer for service!

The success of this generation Thunderbird almost killed off the Corvette. FoMoCo was able to produce this car because it shared many components with the bigger standard Ford. Many of these original Thunderbirds still show up regularly on Craigslist...sometimes they are still in poor condition waiting to be restored.

Lou not sure if this is true but I read somewhere the drum brakes were very weak, and the cowling leaked rainwater into the cabin, similar to mustangs of that era? Was the engine factory or aftermarket?

I always thought the Tbird showed good restraint on trim . Lots of 50s and 60s cars were over developed on chrome and signage . Tbirds might even be short a bit of trim which makes it stand out

Refreshing to see original hubcaps instead of the aftermarket reproduction 1962-63 Sport Roadster wire wheels, which so many people mistake as original options. Unlike 1955-56, the 1957 hubcaps are unique to the Thunderbird.

Very true, even the guys on the auction block at B-J say “original wire wheels” when a 55-57 comes across the block with them. The wires look nice but totally not original
@MostlyBuicks4 жыл бұрын
@@peace.quiet.freedom6675 I am not an expert on all cars , but with the cars I am very familiar with, B/J makes countless mistakes at every auction. And then there is the shill bidding I suspect because of the bidding fiascos that go on with them.
@MostlyBuicks4 жыл бұрын
@@peace.quiet.freedom6675 Now the 1955 and 1956 'Birds had a wire wheel over option (as did all Fords those years) that fit over the dog dish covers. The 1955 dog dish covers had red accents and the 1956 dog dish covers had white accents. These years had 15" wheels. 14" wheels were on all 1957-1966 T-Birds.
