This Lincoln is stunning. The color, fit and finish, the attention to detail are incredible. A work of art. It proves a point that cars today are boring. Cars back then have class.

Very nice Mark V! These Mark's are the forgotten ones in a lot of ways. When Ford reset the naming in the late 1960s, the early Marks, after the Mark II, faded into the recesses of time. This one is a beauty and just about perfect. Thanks Lou and Glenn!

When this car goes by, for that split second you feel like you’re in 1960. These Lincoln’s are rare. They built a lot more Cadillacs than Lincoln’s at that time so when you see one of these it’s more of a head turner than a Cadillac. Beautiful car!!!

They had a very low survival rate as well because they were so heavy that the chassis structure would buckle under the weight
@derekgaliee43512 жыл бұрын
@@todddenio3200 what???
@todddenio32002 жыл бұрын
@@derekgaliee4351 easily verified that the convertibles especially would have the bodies buckle under their own weight. They were unibodies and the engineers didn’t design the structure strong enough to hold up without bending and buckling because the cars were so heavy. I first learned about this from my uncle who was an antique and vintage car collector and seller but was hesitant to believe it until I read about it in an issue of Collectable Automobile magazine back in the 80’s. Even the hardtops were known to eventually buckle in the center and/or rear quarters but the convertibles were notorious for it and a very few of them have survived because of it and those that have survived were very gently babied from the day they were bought new. Even the slightest of bumps in the roads would cause them to start buckling within a few years and even sooner if they were used on rough roads. Then add rust into the equation and you have a car that is not likely to survive for very long. They were big, they were beautiful, they were beastly powerful, and they bent like their underside and subframes were made out of tin cans. Not enough under structure from under the front seats back. A lot of long time Lincoln buyers switched to Cadillac because of it

I always remember the story of my uncle and aunt that owned a ‘58. It stopped running and my uncle decided to tow it home with a Ford F-100 pickup. My aunt was in the Lincoln and everything was going okay until they had to turn a corner in the city where they lived. My aunt was about 5’2” and probably weighed 120 pounds. My uncle turned the corner no problem, but my aunt ended up pulling both of them into someone’s front yard. My uncle ran up to his wife and said “why the heck didn’t you turn!” He had forgotten that with the engine not running they had no power assist on the steering!

Hi, Lou! Right on cue, when you said, "Take in the front of THAT!" you could hear "Hahahahaha", then "WHOOOA!" LOL! When you've got that big eggcrate grille with the pinheads in each square, cocked headlights, dagmars that stick out like a sore thumb, big slab sides and all that chrome, fins and jewelry out back, THAT is something you absolutely can't ignore! The Lincoln design team decided it was a little too much and came up with the very clean and understated 1961 Continental that became the template for the next few decades worth of Lincolns. BTW, the 1960 Lincoln convertibles were the last two-door soft-tops they ever made. The 1961-1967 convertibles were all four-doors, and there has not been a convertible Lincoln made since. BTW, when Lincoln reintroduced the Mark in mid-1968 (as a 1969 model), it was called Mark III rather than Mark VI, apparently because Henry Ford II felt the 1958-1960 Marks were not in the tradition of the original Continental and Continental Mark II. Question about the seven power window buttons: So he said the back window opens. Were two of the buttons for the vent windows? Lou, you've found your share of spectacles on this program, and this is definitely one! Many thanks to you and Glenn for sharing and taking us along for a very Continental ride!

Lou I am so happy that the owner pointed out the boot for the convertible top and snuck in a brief description of how it worked before you moved on. Then there was the interior and the owner mentioned that he purchased it in Italy. Seemed like an important part of the story. I always want to know more about the motor and in this case those shiny valve covers. Again no questions asked nor information given. I am always interested in how many years a person has owned a car and how they acquired it.

This is indeed a beauty, Lou. The color and paint condition are incredible. Love the seats, appointments and detail to style. The sculpturing on the front fenders (in a way) previewed the 'horse shoe' side sculpturing that would come later on the original Mustang. As great as these cars were, they were kind of a 'dead end' in continuing the Lincoln/Continental in this manner. The 1961 model ushered in a style that would be of its time, and timeless. The '61 in many ways owes much more to the '55-'57 Mark II's in its simplicity. The rear quarter and taillights in particular, very closely. This is interesting because design is generally more evolutionary. In the case, the '58-'60 Mark III-V styling was just dropped without a trace for a clean sheet of paper.

You've heard me say it before...during that era, too much of a good thing was just the ticket. I only wish there had been a 1960 Fiat 500 nearby...would have loved seeing the two cars parked side by side, so we could get an idea just how ENORMOUS that Lincoln is. Only in America and "My Car Story".

These Lincolns from 1958-1960 did not sell well as compared to Cadillacs from the same period. In the age of excess, and all three luxury brands offered in the USA were guilty of such, the 1959 and 60 Lincolns were luxurious and well detailed. The Imperial had the roadability over Cadillac and Lincoln, but Lincoln offered beauty and body sculpturing that was meant to show off the great size of these cars. Caddy offered the huge fins and Imperial offered the same but a bit more subtle, and Lincoln went into a different styling concept. However, all of these vehicles were unique in style and execution compared to the similarity of cars today. Thank you for sharing this remarkable 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V convertible on "My Car Story."

HI LOU, HOW ARE YOU, LOU?? ( that rhymes?? ) FABULOUS, FABULOUS CAR!! PAINSTAKINGLY RESTORED, DETAILED, AND PRESENTED!! SO MANY WONDERFUL DETAILS TO LOOK AT!! I LOVED THAT DASHBOARD, WITH ITS HOODED GAUGES, AND ENGINE TURNED SURFACE, ALONG WITH THE HORIZONTAL CHROME LINES; ALSO THAT INCREDIBLY COMPLEX GRILLE AND ITS DOPPELGANGER REAR END!! BUT TO ME, THE WEIRDEST THING ON THIS CAR WAS, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE DUAL ARMED BRAKE PEDAL!! I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE LIKE THAT BEFORE; HAVE YOU?? THANKS LOU!! CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT.

Mega disappointed that you didn't have the owner put the top up and show off the reverse-slant back window that actually rolls down! My grandfather had a 58 Continental 2dr and a 58 Capri 2dr. The Continental was plagued with problems, so he traded it for the Capri. I was about 5 or 6 and I just fell in love with those cars. In today's context, these cars were absolutely enormous!

Hi 61 Rampy, Took us quite some time to get the two pieces of the boot for the convertible top down to fit on right :-) Unfortunately time did not allow for a top up display. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Grandfathers car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
