I have a '59 that I saved from the crusher...literally within minutes...but I could not let anything so magnificent get cubed. I can only imagine it as the official chariot for the Emperor of Mars, it is so out of this world

The 1961-63 are really iconic and kind of the opposite of this - a lot smaller, super tasteful instead of over the top, and very influential in style. But the 1958-60's are awesome in their own way. The regular non-Continental models are nice if you like a normal wrap around back window slanted the normal way.

Very nice car. I have a 58 Mark III fully restored white over burgundy 4 door. I’m prejudiced of course but by 1960 the the first run of these cars (my 58) had been dumbed down by Ford because of a lot of criticism they received on the styling of 58, and then the 59. Look up some images of a 58 Mark III and you’ll see what I mean. Talk about mid century modern, the 58 kills it! When I take mine to car shows people Freak out over it, which I love of course. Mechanically they weren’t great cars. Bad brakes, overheating, about 10 mpg, vapor lock, electric clock stopped working after about six months, etc. but we still love them! Kudos to owner. I’m sure it didn’t look this good when he got it.......
@emjayay
@emjayay 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. The 1958 is the icon of the model. Same thing with the highly thought of 1961 - it got worse every year as marketing demanded changes to make it more normal. I never had brake, vapor lock, or overheating problems with my 40+ year old 1961 with the same engine. Particularly if you have AC on the 58 or 61 types you have to get a nationally renowned expert if the system isn't working properly. No one else understands it, and for good reason. Of course it's explained in the shop manual but they don't want to bother. And all Ford electric clocks stopped working in at least a few years. As you know, you can get a replacement mechanism.

The 58s were considerably quicker too, and they had the TV screen dash. The 60 did have revised and (some say) better located rear leaf suspension though - coils ride great but....

Just had to watch this one again. I love these 58-60 Continentals. My favorite is the '59 but all three years are so stunning. I don't understands why people were not bowled over by these and didn't buy one. Cadillac was outrageous in '59 & '60. Thanks to Charles and Matt! Beautiful car.

when I was twenty one about (1985), I was driving the "Renault 6" of my mother. I was since my 5 or 6 years old an absolut fan of american cars. I was with my girlfriend and one of my best friends, when we saw that incredible-gigantic and rare in France Continental, parked . can't remember if it was a 58, 59 or 60.whatever, immediately half turn on the road (like american cops...yeah baby...I know the thrill...)and I came to park just beside the prehistoric animal made of thick steel sheet. I stopped when my rear bumper was just beside the one of the Lincoln. and what made us laughed so loud, it's to see that my gril friend and I, on the front seat of the Renault, we were beside the rear seat of the Ford pride. this is what I love in american cars of that time, their exuberance.

The year was 1958, and the day was my 7th birthday. Among my gifts, the most important was, of course, a white brand-new 1958 Lincoln 4-door hardtop! Yes, that is right, but wait: the car was not for real, but a miniature, probably 1:18 scale, of about 1 ft long, all steel-made, manufactured in Japan! At the time, a strong segment of steel car miniatures aroused in Japan, and I still luckily got a few more in my following birthdays, until my early childhood ended up. But then I already knew most makes, and became an addict. The details I remember the most are 1. the oval housing for the set of 4 headlights (a novelty) 2. the boomerangs at both ends of the front bumper 3. the front fenders with the salient shape of past era cars 4. and the curved concave rear panel & bumper Unfortunately, as a 7yo boy, I drove it for so many miniature miles that it couldn't have lasted long. Great memories!

What a wonderful Lincoln Continental! These cars from Lincoln (1958 to 1960) were often overlooked by everyone, and those who managed Ford. However, in the post 2020 period, these cars are now being recognized as some really amazing vehicles, when compared to the other luxury makes, and it's about time! Pretending they were a mistake is a mistake! Cadillac was outrageous and so was Imperial in styling, so why not Lincoln! They were the biggest and roomiest, because that was the plan. Unibody construction, unheard of in such a large car. They were fast for their weight and size, but the 430 had the power.By the time of 1960, the engines were fitted with a 2barrel carb, reducing HP. They still had the 430 and they were smooth! Thanks to Charles Phoenix and those who lovingly take care of these beautiful examples of our automotive past, we can see how great so many cars were that have been overlooked and forgotten about. This is one of them! The amazing 1960 Lincoln Continental 4 door hardtop. Thanks for sharing!

Its funny that the 58-60 Lincolns were considered very excess and really put down as compared to the new clean 61 Lincolns. So often they are looked at as a great example where excess was just too much (canted headlights for example). Your presentation on this car puts the viewer back in 1960 and makes you fully understand why you would want to buy this car new. From the drivers view those ridges on the hood just add so much style. All your presentations are very good but one thing makes this your best one of all. That is at the end it shows the car at dusk/getting dark and shows even better how beautiful this car is with all the exterior and interior lights at night. If you have the opportunity in the future especially on the luxury cars to show all the lighting in the evening that would even further enhance your review of the cars. I also like how you point out all the old business' of the 50's as you drive buy. This is as close as we can get to reliving those great times. I really enjoy what you are doing. Thanks againl.

I love vintage Lincolns. I am particularly fond of this model year because a twin starred in a favorite 1969 movie, "Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice" along with Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon. The interior seating upholstery is described in Lincoln sales literature as the "button and biscuit" style. This car has the white boulsters and black center sections on the seating. JFK's famous 1961 Lincoln Continental presidential limousine had the same upholstery style but with navy blue boulsters and light blue center sections. Thank you very much for sharing this treasure.

Should have a tugboat certificate to pilot this. It would look good cruising down the Mississippi. Then Ford went and spoiled the fun with the beautiful 1961 total redesign. When I was in college in 1966 one of my roomates bought one of these for $300 and used it to haul band equipment to his gigs. He never went to any classes, he was a dedicated electric organ player.

This car, due to the Ford Motor Company making the 1960 models the world’s widest, competes with the 1966 Imperial by Chrysler as the world’s largest sedans. George: Do you have a cutoff year above which you won’t feature a car? I consider the high-water mark of mid-century modern American cars to be the 1966 Imperial - last year for body-on-frame for that model, for example. Not oozing mid-century “kitsch” like the 1956 to 1962 models, but a high-water mark regardless.

That had to be the greatest instrument panel, of the entire series. Robert McNamara had to go ruin the 1960 Lincoln, through de-tuning it, abolishing 4-barrel carburetor availability and to switch from a coil-sprung rear axle to a truck-like leaf spring-suspended one

This was the end of some pretty garish 50’s styling. They got it right in ‘61.

Henry Ford II (the Deuce) would plead with the design department, could you please make a Lincoln that I'm not embarrassed to get out of at the Detroit Athletic Club. I love this car. America was riding the crest of the wave. I think Mr. Kruhulik put it best in The Seven Year Itch, Gooo man go!

Spectacular car, but the rear door handles should be positioned as the front - a 45° angle pointing forward and up. Fabulous car.
