I used to live in Beckton prefab estate as a kid in the 60s, so great to see this. My uncle, Jimmy Dennis worked at the gasworks at the time and my great granddad was working there in the early 1900s.

Have you seen '' The End of Arthur's marriage'' {film made in 1965 on here} that features in part this gasworks. :)

The brief clip of the engine driver in the cab talking down to two men on the ground.... the engine driver is my grandad, Cecil Stanley "Jack" Jarrold. He worked there from age 14 until he retired in 1965 at age 65! (apart from a break where he served in the Army in France in WWI and as an ARP in the Blitz in WW2).

Some fine old and very distinctive steam locomotives. I wonder if some of them still exist today in museums?
@highflyinryan76weezer255 жыл бұрын
They had some locomotives dating back all the way to the 1850s, still running there until it closed.

That is amazing! ...Where are they now, though?

Thanks for this - my late Father worked here, so it was great to find this film clip. I've sent a message to ask if you have any film that might include a steam roller being used on site at Beckton Gasworks - my Dad used to drive one!

They must not think too much of their engine drivers, they don't even have a roof!
