We're looking at a 1961 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible in Mardi Gras Red Paint. The car features a factory 413 CI V8 “Golden Lion” engine.
The car's Owner is Frank Troost. Frank’s had this car since 2015. Frank shares he’s never seen another one except in pictures.

Next to my 1961 Cadillac, the ‘61 New Yorker is my favorite finned era car. Long canted fins, well into the door panels, canted headlights, and mock spare tire on trunk lid. 1961 was also the last great year for fins. Frank’s classic car collection is unsurpassed. Merry Christmas Lou!🎄✌️

Nice, red, Christmas morning surprise!!!! My favorite years of insanity design by Chrysler. I love this era. They were unique in everyway including performance. Fun fact, the producers of Mad Men, even recognized the cultural significance of Chrysler design of the era. Nothing says early 60's like Chryslers..... Ben Draper drove a 60, Dodge, Matador, from what I could tell, in the first season. LOL! "If you want to go somewhere fast, you drive a Dodge. If you've already arrived, you own a Cadillac." My favorite quote from Mad men about cars of the mid 60's. In the back of my mind, I wondered if Don was thinking Imperial or Cadillac. LOL! Thanks Lou. These cars are so unappreciated and rare. You are really the only car guy who features these works of art!!

We all love these Chrysler 300's and like Franks New Yorker be they convertibles, wagons or hardtops with their Exner fins and the Astrodome dash. But in those days, 60 years ago, as Frank said, they were never meant to last, though we look back on those days with amazement at the design and sculpture. 100,000 miles without rust proofing or the engineering tolerances of today, they were soon in the wreckers yard. Thanks for showing us this amazing restoration and conservation of over $100,000 well spent...if you can afford it. Merry Christmas from Australia.

Love the whole car, but most especially the "Astro-Dome" cluster with the electroluminescent lighting! These cars were known as the "Banker's Hot Rods", in that it was engineered as a HOT full size performance car, but understatedly elegant. You'd never be embarrassed pulling up to the valet stand at the Country Club in this car, and you'd still be able to beat most everything away from a stoplight!

Hi, Lou! Merry Christmas! 1961 was the last year Chrysler made a New Yorker convertible. It wasn't cheap, $4,592 to start, and just 576 built, although the 300G cost far more, $5,841 and 337 built. So many interesting features that grab your attention on this car: the cocked headlamps, the raised driver's seat back, those high-flying fins (the last year Chryslers would have them), and, lest we forget, that Astrodome instrument panel and the way it lights up at night. BTW, 1961 was also the first year for the Newport series, with which the Chrysler brand was looking to reach into a somewhat lower price territory without bringing out a smaller car that they felt would compromise the brand's image of being big and powerful. "No junior editions", as the ads said. It was also the last year for the Windsor, which had previously been the entry level series, and would be replaced by the "non-letter" 300 series for 1962. Let me tell you of another interesting experience I had with a '61 Chrysler. First off, I should make note that the boomerang taillights that were mounted in the fins of the 1960 Chryslers were retained for the '61 Town & Country wagons. One of our most loyal members in the International Station Wagon Club (who is also from Illinois) has two '61 T&Cs, one a Newport and the other a New Yorker. One time during one of our conventions I got to ride with him in the front seat of one of them, and when he signaled a left turn I could actually see the taillight blinking from where I was sitting! Thanks to Frank for sharing this rare gem from his vast collection and to both of you for another fine presentation!

The boomerang taillights used on Chrysler's wagons in '60, and again in '61,differed from those on all the other '60 Chrysler models in that they screwed on from the outside, since the wagons' body style didn't provide the same inside access as did the coupes, convertibles and sedans.

Great car, these cars were under appreciated when they were new. I remember seeing Imperials running in the demo derbys before they were outlawed. I seen one go through the heat and win the feature and they never even broke the taillights!

Merry Christmas Lou! I cringe when I used to be so headstrong about GM cars and put down Mopars/Independents. I came to find that they're all gorgeous cars. My favorite being the 1957 Plymouth Fury. The lower sleek look of these cars are unique and actually much more modern than GM offerings. I surely do not recall seeing anything close to this car at shows. I applaud all involved to resurrect this rare machine. Breathtaking.

Wow, Lou! That Chrysler is so beautiful looking, it's hard to believe the owner found it in a junkyard! It looks as if it drove right out of an old television sitcom from the '60s. One thing I noticed: unless I looked away for a second, I saw the 300G wasn't in the brochure with the other Chryslers! Probably had its own brochure, I'm thinking. I don't think Chrysler included their Letter Cars - at least for '55 thru '63 - in the standard Chrysler brochures. They issued a separate brochure each year for the Letter Cars - done in black and white, for a different effect. Try www.oldcarbrochures.com, to check out some of those brochures.

This Chrysler New Yorker will now and forever be - The 2020 Christmas Car! I guess because its red and its Christmas. (heh). Why not? So yeah. A Christmas Car. I would love to see his collection up close they are just awesome too bad I live so far away. Such a nice man he is and his love for his cars warms my heart. Omg what a gorgeous New Yorker convertible! Frank is right..all the car shows I've ever been to throughout the years I've never seen a 61 New Yorker convertible. I cannot believe this was a junk yard save! This car looks like it's been babied all its life. Thanks Lou for the link so I could see this video! I'm glad there are people in this world like Frank, who will rescue cars like this and bring them back to their full glory. Thanks for the tip about Pigg mats! I have an older car that leaks a little oil. Are those mats washable I'm assuming? Wished I had known about those mats sooner, I had a horrible oil leak for years all over my garage floor. I think my floor is ruined. Anyone know how I get all the oil up off the floor? Old mops? Rags? I don't even know how to go about it, but I won't lay a new mat down unless I get all that gunk up.

hey Lou its me...great car of course but nobody ever talks about why those cars were outlawed from demoderby's. to promote the "seamless" front end look same as the back half, these cars were fenderless having 4 welded in and leaded 1/4 panels making them 5-times stronger, and if that's not enough those Imperials had backset cooling systems far from the front fascia, making them the winner in every derby they entered. oh and those JFK Lincolns were the same real deal holyfield.

The frame design on those '63/'64/'65 Imperials had *ALOT* to do with the overall strength of 'em though!😉...& the frontend was the weak point of 'em (primarily the tierods/steering). The suicide door Lincoln's weren't/aren't much for strength in the backend (they're ok but not overly great) but they have a killer frontend (if/when done right) on 'em though for sure!👌👍

That British TV series wasn't the only thing that is Absolutely Fabulous. What a car! And just think, there's an easy 500 streetable HP available in a stock-appearing motor if you want it. This car has more "design" in its DASHBOARD than any ten modern cars. The "gumball machine" is just a jewel, though my experience with MoPars tells me that dash-mounted rear view mirrors are a crap idea.....
