1962-67 Nova Power Steering Conversion with 400-Series Box

For those that do not know, this kit is literally at the fire wall. That means only a factory column can be cut down. Using a tilt column will be too long and not attach at the firewall. Yeah, that wasn’t mentioned in the description or instructions.

I put this kit on my 67 Nova years ago and Cpp told me I could use the stock column which is different than the preceding year novas but I still ended up having to buy an I didit tilt column and it fit with a rag joint.

You should have talked about steering column with this set up. . That will be a nightmare.

One more comment about the column used after the box and steering components were installed? I purchased one from another company. It all assembled fine. Problem is that the column is too long and basically is right at my chest. Any suggestions?

You can change steering wheels to one with a different offset. Short of putting a different column in, that's about all you can do.

What did you do for the alternator mounting?

How big of a tire can you fit with that mini sub frame kit?

Hi Roger, we have the same setup on our other 1967 Nova and the largest wheel and tire we could comfortably fit under the stock sheet metal was a 225/40R18 on an 18x7 wheel

What is the best way to get the old steering box out?

It depends on the vehicle. In this case, the car had a small-block chevy with tube headers so we needed to remove the headers to get the steering box out. You are welcome to give us a call at (866)-882-4131 and one of our tech guys can give you advice on your specific car.

To begin - I'm an auto mechanic MORON. I state that upfront to establish the FACT that I purchased NOTHING on my own. CPP Techs provided THEIR reccomendations for EVERY part purchased. My car is a 1966 Chevy II Nova 400 2-door hardtop with COLUMN SHIFT. The original steering column WILL NOT WORK. There was NO notification of that in the part description when I purhased it 12/6/22. (I note that a warning has been added since that time.) The posts below confirm CPP's position that it would work with a column shift 7 months ago - approximately August of 2023. That is 8 months AFTER I made my purchase. Nothing regarding the steering column is shown or addressed in this video. My mechanic has struggled mightily trying to alter my stock steering column to work with the CPP 400 series box. We are throwing in the towel. I will attempt to return the box, but have serious doubts CPP will permit a refund. Purchase this part at your own RISK.
