As a grade school student over 60 years ago, my grade school teacher was one of those lucky people who Chrysler chose to test drive this car. I think she had it about a year or so. It was cool listening to this car since it sounded like nothing else on the road. If one were to drag race the car, there would be a lag getting the car to move. But once that lag ended, the car came on like gang busters in acceleration. It is a vehicle that is still far ahead of vehicles made today.

@4406bbldb3 жыл бұрын
Yep. Originally we had some tech but no where near what mattered. For instance if the compressor stage is spinning the fuel can shut off and the engine will seamlessly draw fuel and ign to produce power. Today a really small hybrid system could easily operate the compressor stage. The fuel economy is poor normally but with the fuel turned off it greatly improves (really haa.) The car gets the same fuel consumption at a stop light as it did at 70 mph so city mileage was horrendous. Im done.

Interestingly, they don't shift. These things used a modified Chrysler automatic, I think it was a Torqueflite, without first and second gear, and without the torque converter. Because of the high RPM's of the output impeller, it was connected directly to the transmission's input shaft through a 10:1 gear reduction. It didn't need a torque converter because the output impeller wasn't mechanically linked to the turbine engine's shaft. It was driven by the thrust of the engine, so when the car was not moving, the impeller wasn't rotating, even though the engine was. Because they lacked 1st and second gear, acceleration wasn't that great on these cars. My uncle, who drove Chrysler products, was lucky enough to drive one. He got the hookup from one of his patients who happened to be in charge of one of the maintenance shops, (the one for the Southeastern US), that Chrysler set up specifically to maintain the Turbine cars.

In the U.K. the Rover car company also worked on turbine engines and raced them at Le Mans in conjunction with BRM one of which finished 10th in 1965. PBS did a video on them if you can find it…very interesting .

The project continued into the 1980s. That's when they determined the $10k turbine price tag was too excessive. That determination wasn't in the 1960s. Still, $10k in the 1980s was still a lot of money. In 1964, that would be the equivalent fo $100,000 today. They would have known right up front the mass production cost of a turbine was cost prohibitive. Not to mention they would have noticed spending $5.5 million, plus, just on engines, during the manufacturing of their initial 55 cars. Heck, in the 1960s you could buy a new plane, fully equipped, for $14,000. My mother bought a new car in 1977 for $12,000. Aside from this huge blunder in timeline, the video is very good.

Looking back on the ‘Cars Of The Future’ made in the 1950’s & 60’s is interesting. To me it demonstrated minds more interested in aesthetics and their version of fashion. In reality, nobody drives cars with bubble canopies. Radiant heat makes it impractical, and it appears nobody thought about that. Nobody drives the stupid looking rocket or jet fighter styles cars they promised either. We are far more interested in practicalities, fuel usage, safety, road holding, comfort etc. we want to know we can fit practical loads in and that they perform sufficiently for our needs, and I don’t mean 1/4 mile times or other nonsenses. These cars of the fifties were ridiculous flights of fancy, thrust on us by people who had no idea of our needs. Obviously they couldn’t have foreseen microchips and software, but it seems to me they didn’t get much right. It was all a bit ‘Tomorrowland, by Disney.’

Why does the author keep referring to "cooling fins" with respect to the styling touches? Wouldn't those styling elements reflect the internal fan blades of the turbine engine"s compressor and not cooling fins as might be seen on aircooled piston engines like motorcycle engines? Certainly the compressor blades and driven blades inside the engine wouldn't be serving as "cooling fins".

As far as anyone can tell, TURBAN cars are often found in India BUT turbines are found in some 1963 Chrysler cars. Pronounce "turbine" : kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5rUlIR9bbWqlbM

i tried "warped perception" on youtube. he personally sees no end to liquid fuel. so burning solid fuel has to be tried elsewhere. i have a few diesel designs that burn wood. flathead cars. intermittent turbine battery charger.

poor choice of words when call it jet, turbine or something like that, more accurately it should be called turbo-shaft engine
