Hang on there Jay, these small Ford inline sixes only had 4 main bearings. This 4 main bearing block continued being enlarged, all the way up to 250 c.i. The f-main blocks can be identified by having only 3 core plugs on the side of the block. The 144's became boat anchors. The Comet shared chassis with the Ford Falcon until 1966 when the Comet grew up and joined Ford's Fairlane. I had a friend who had a '63 V8 Comet with the 2-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic. It also had power steering, which was the linkage type. It was very vague steering. Fairly reliable and great gas mileage. I didn't enjoy tuning it up because of those braces under the hood. You couldn't go wrong with the Dart GT, Studie or the Rambler.

Great comment, Timothy. Your mom's boyfriend was right. Especially with the jazzy body styles available back then. My dad was a Mercury fan, too. My grandmother had a 63 S22 Comet 2 dr. Same color as your feature car. Hers had the 'big block' 170 with the 2 speed Merc-O-Matic. She traded her 58 Lincoln Continental in for it. Her car had bucket seats and an all metal center console- the console lid alone weighed more than an entire modern plastic console. Driving it revealed its typical compact Ford sound of a tinny engine with no power, but it was fine for driving around Sun City. She had that car until her death in 1985, with not one spot of rust on it (AZ car). Stupid but fun fact: I have spent the last 60 years thinking her car was a 62, until you showed the pics of the 62. Good to see you do a '63 Comet. One of the most prominent car memories in our family is Mom's '63 Comet wagon, like the convertible you show it was white with red interior, six under the hood but auto trans, power steering and brakes; also remember it didn't have carpet but factory-installed red rubberized flooring and padded red vinyl mat over the rear load space. On the "Would You Rather" choices in the first scenario, you put In two cars I would like to have, the Mercury Comet and the Studebaker Lark. In the second scenario, I would go with the Comet. My Uncle had a 61, my dad had a 66. A girl friend's parents had a 60 station wagon. Falcons and Comets were popular selling cars in the 60's the popularity of the Falcon started to drop off as the Mustang came on the Market the Comet actually seemed to increase in popularity in the mid 60s. On the specs mentioned on the 170 ci 6 cylinder engine, I think they performed better than what was posted. I had one of them matched with a 3 speed manual transmission in my 63 Falcon Futura Convertible. I had that exceeding 95 mph. The speedometer needle wasn't real steady at that speed, but the needle stayed above 95 and below 100. So I tell people it was 97 or 98 mph. Thankfully, I didn't get picked up on radar that would confirm the exact speed, because if I did my parents would have taken the car away from me. It was the fastest I ever drove a car and the only time I ever tried to see how fast any of my cars would go. Nice video. The boot cover in the back seat was black, that tells me it was not original. Those covers matched the color of the seats when the car was new from the factory.

Love those old 1st gen Comets 😍 Small and light like the Falcon, but better dressed and with better build quality. Never saw one with a V8 but they did OK with the 170. Super-easy to work on but rarely needed more than a tune-up, and the distributor access was superb, unlike the Slant-6. You could buy these dirt cheap into the early 90's- wish I'd taken advantage of that. WYR the others are faster but it's the Comet for me. Round 2 goes to the Rambler 44H; just always liked that body style, but the Tempest is a close second even with the weird drivetrain or maybe because of that.

WYR: Dodge Dart and Mercury Comet I adore the ‘63 and ‘64 Darts in terms of styling and with the 225 slant six available, it’s really a no-brainer. Though, I will say that the Comet’s interior seems nicer than Dart. As for the second scenario, I almost picked the Tempest, for its looks, but I would trust a 170 inline 6 before I would the Pontiac Trophy 4. They’re very unique engines, being a a slant 4 cylinder, but I’ve heard they’re prone to vibration issues. If we’re talking V8, though, I’d go Tempest.

Hi Jay! The Comet is just COOL! Would be a FUN ride for someone! With that 3 on the tree it should have OK performance, just not V-8 performance. I had a couple of the later, bigger Falcons, and one had the 200 inch six. Only drove it a few times, but it seemed to have decent pickup with an automatic. The later one had a 289 in it and had great performance! These can be GREAT little collector cars for folks, but have been somewhat overlooked. I always viewed the first generation comet as the filling the space of both the first generation Falcon and Falcon and Fairlane. The Comet’s style seemed to split the difference between the two. I know the Fairlane itself was basically a larger falcon. I now see why since the comet had a slightly longer wheelbase than the Falcon. I think the second generation was officially in the same size class as the Fairlane. Anyway, as a kid born in 1964, there were still a good number of 1st and 2nd generation comets still on the road even when I was 10 years old or so.

My 4th grade teacher had a 1965 Mercury Comet. I liked her car but the paint had faded. I never ask her why the paint was faded.

My decision is based on the best engineering & and technology. #1 Dodge Dart. Torsion bars suspension, unibody construction, high build quality. #3 Studebaker, Bell crank-king pin suspension, body on chassis. Rust prone. Basically 1953 technology.

@geebs764 ай бұрын
To me these were just another generic car that was on the road when I was a kid. This one is a nice example and would probably be fun for some slow weekend summer cruising. I'd choose the 1963 Studebaker Lark Daytona and the 1963 Pontiac Tempest.

Great video. If those MPG numbers are somewhat accurate, I wouldn't see any reason to not have the V-8. Also I saw what I thought was the VIN on that underhood brace and noticed the 3 at the front. Does that mean it was made in Canada?

WYR: All of them. NTT: Celebration by Kool and the Gang. I'd put a roll bar in it in case of a rollover. I prefer an entact neck while riding in the back seat AND in the front seat.
@P_RO_4 ай бұрын
Without seat belts it wouldn't help. Those might have been optional; Ford offered them in the 64 models for sure. Even upright and belted in, the metal dashboard would crack your skull in a hard crash. Different world back then and nobody did much for car safety.

A few things here. The 1958 recession was nowhere near, or anything like the one in 2008. The '58 Edsel that debuted decades ago should NOT have been the car we're familiar with at all. It wasn't revolutionary. It was this unnecessary, strangely styled car that turned buyers off. Had the Edsel been what we would later know to be the Comet, it would have been a success. In late '57 though, the Comet, Falcon, Corvair and Valient compacts were still in development. In other words, Ford shouldn't have had any new line of cars until the 1960 model year. The Comet would have been the Mercury Comet from the beginning with no Edsel division ever having existed. The other thing is Ford ended production of the Edsel in November '59, so there were very few 1960 models produced. They basically were 1960 Fords but with a different front and back end.
@What.its.like.4 ай бұрын
I think the Edsel that came out in 1958 had some really cool features the citation series had the big E475 which stood for 475 pound feet which was a lot for a passenger car back then.. 410 cid one year only engine only available in citation and Corsair It was the first car with spinner ribs. It was the first car with electronic push button control. Yes, it turned out the problematic, but it was a learning experience. It had other features, but a lot of them were gimmicks, but that was the 50s everyone had their own gimmicks I wish they would've made the Edsel comet that car looked cool
