I had a 64 Montclair with factory a/c, power seat, windows and of course the power "breezeway " rear window. It was about 5 yrs old when bought it and average miles but it was a great highway machine.

I called them "gangster cars," because I was taught that gangsters shot tommy guns out of open back windows, and any car that had an automatic open back window that wasn't a station wagon was illegitimate. The last Mercury Grand Marquis should've had the retractable rear windows.

That cantilevered rear window was pioneered by PACKARD in 1955, in what was planned as Packard's the next generation for 1957. The ill fated Packard "Predictor" was the prototype for what became the 1958 Lincoln: longer lower, wider, and boxy, with a cantilevered rear window. Elements of it influenced Ford, Mercury, T-bird, and Edsel too. . Even Pontiac seems to have borrowed the split grill and "arrow head " emblem from it. The Predictor's full scale model and drawings of it are still at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend.

I have the "Predictor" brochure. Too bad Packard wasn't able to secure bank loans to tool up for the 1957 model, it killed the company.

My Grandpa had one. A memory from when I was about 3or 4 (1967 or 68) was Grandpa's dog always rode in the back seat & that rear window happened to be down. Grandpa heard a noise, looked in the rearview mirror, saw that his dog had climbed out onto the trunk. So he hit the brakes (hard). Dog flew back in, cleared the back rest of the front seat, and slammed into the center of the dashboard with a big yelp. I'm sure when he hit the brake he said "Jesus Christ" 'cuz that was a pretty common expression. All that commotion scared the heck out of me. I didn't really comprehend what had happened until Grandpa told me. The dog was fine but no longer wanted to sit in the back. A very vivid memory.

I had one just like this one. It had a H.O. 390, 4 bbl with factory headers and dual exhaust. If you take and spray the tracks of your windows with some silicone spray it will help and you won't believe how much easier it is on the electric motors, it will keep them from going out prematurely. It's a bitch to change some of them.

Now imagine a station wagon with the tailgate with that window arrangement? The hardest detail is the end glass (can't leave them on the "tailgate"), so have them swing away over the wide pillar (inside) once the center glass doesn't need the support, then they spring back, before the center glass moves. ;-)
