327 Chevy small block dyno test. (May 8th 2022 edited title to avoid confusion)
Bored and stroked to a 383 and built for my 64 Impala that is being restored. Matching casting numbers, original looks, high torque and good manners were important.
Using the dyno shop headers, it managed to get 420 torque and 378 horsepower using stock 327 block, heads, intake.
With the stock 2.5 inch cast iron exhaust manifolds and 2.5 inch head pipes, 424 torque and 362 horsepower. Very little loss was attributed to the low flow rate of the stock intake manifold.
With the stock 2.5 inch cast iron exhaust manifolds, 2.5 inch head pipes and a 2 inch reducer at the end (the stock exhaust necks down from 2.5 to 2 inches) 404 torque and 351 horsepower.
With the stock 2.5 inch cast iron exhaust manifolds, 2.5 inch head pipes and a 2 inch reducer at the end and the stock air cleaner/filter 410 torque and 362 horsepower.

I have a 327 I'm about to build out of my 67 Camaro. I went with the rams horn exhaust on my 57 Bel Air because of clearance problems. It's great to see they make only a minor difference until 5200. For daily drivers, that's just fine. Easier to get to plugs, starter, no starter heat soak, cooler engine bay when ceramic coated.

The "rams horns" came in different sizes. In 1962 I ordered an Impala with the 300hp 327. It had 2.5 inch outlets and the 250hp I believe had 2 inch outlets. I did a lot of drag racing in stock classes and switched to a set of Hedman headers and found no noticeable difference in performance. It did sound better though!

Proof that headers are pretty much a waste of time and money for a daily driver, 3000 to 5000 rpm the power gain was negligible. On some engines the stock exhaust manifolds are equal to headers, big block mopars, again for the daily drivers, in the idle to 5,000 rpm range.

Back in '69 I built a 327 (actually 331, 030 over) for my 67 Corvette out of a 350 4 bolt block and a forged large journal 327 '68 truck crank. I wasn't after max power, but I thought a 67 should have a 327, not a 350. So the block would not pass scrutiny by an expert, but it's stronger and I built it to be turbo'd. Big valve angle plug factory heads, much relieving around the valves, flat top forged pistons netted 9.3:1 CR which for modest boost is OK. Now running w/o turbo and Qjet carb on iron manifold with iron exh manifolds and mild solid lifter cam because that car originally had a solid cam (435 HP) and I like the way they sound. It's a driver. Never had it on a dyno, but it runs great on any gas I put in it and is rock solid. I've gotten as high as 25 mpg on a trip, but high teens is more common. Open element air cleaner in warmer weather, large snorkel heated air cleaner housing in colder damp weather - absolutely transformed the car from balky cold blooded POS to a pleasant, smooth driver, quick to warm up and go in colder weather. Still driving it.

Since I wanted date correct parts, this is a '64 327 block with (originally) small main journals. I did run across a small journal 383 stroker crank from Speed o motive when I was considering this. I think they are out of business now. But the engine builder went the route of putting large journal caps on the small journal block and having it line bored to large journal size. This gave more choices for the crankshaft (I went with a forged crank).

Yes, it is very unbelievable that production 4 cylinder cars have over 400 ft lbs of torque. The 2017 Toyota Camry 2.5 liter 4 cylinder produces 170 ft lbs. according to Toyota's website. Now I suppose you could hot rod a 4 cylinder with nitrous and turbos to get numbers like that, but I doubt such engines last very long. And yes, engine technology has improved a lot since this engine was made. Both in power and durability and efficiency.

I'm not a Chevy fan, but the 327 always had a sweet spot in my heart for some reason. It seemed to hit way over it's size. As to 4 banger torque, Levi is wrong... the Ford Focus RS has a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine; 350 hp, 350 lb-ft. Took a lot of work to get it there. I respect both.

Apparently, the belt does not need to turn the water pump all that much for a short run. And it keeps the parasitic loss of running the pump to a minimum, so slightly higher HP on the dyno run. I have seen other dynos that use electric water pumps for that reason.

It's a sweet vintage looking engine but a stroker 383 is not a 327. You didn't dyno test a 327. You dyno tested a 383 dressed to look like a 327. The dyno results would be impressive if the engine was a 327 but they're pretty "ho-hum" for a 383. It's cool you used the original block and heads and the performance will surprise unsuspecting challengers but your caption should have been honest and said, "383 Dyno Test". You can dress any small block to look like any size engine you want. Heck, I've dressed a 454 with 396 decals before. No big deal, but I'd never say I'm dyno testing a 396 , 427 or 454 when I'm actually dyno testing a 496 .

It's a small journal ,No company makes a small jor 3.75 stroke for a small jor block, the most you can get is about 340 cu in and I wouldn't trust it.., a 327 .030 to .060 over build right, can make over 390 ft lbs and about 480 hp, but not with those heads, we raced them for years, someone is full of crap, also you got your CF knob maxed out..... quit being shady... best low budget build for the 327, h and m 292 .550 108, cam. 492 ported 2.02, 1.60, heads ti valves add stud girdles for high rpm, a good set or rollers run 12.5 to 1 pistons narrow ring, on 106 fuel, and the biggest ported dual plane you can find we used a eldebrock c3bx Holley 830 dp... small jor, stk steel shaft, good carillo rods dry sump it.. and you need 1 5/8 long tubes.. a nice set of stiff valve springs, sling to 8500rpm it will move... build it less than 4k minus the dry sump... add a set of 221cc brodix heads and a tall vic jr you can bump it up another 100hp, quit being foolish.

Bore and stroke ?? It started life as a 327 block ok well it's 69 and up which was a 350 block underbored to be a 327 the stroke and crank are exactly tje same as a 350 the 69 and up 327 motors. Are not anything special whatsoever and actually are not much more than a stock. 305 plus 22 cu inches no power or torque to speak of small jug motors

A 305 is an underbored 350 that's the reason they are junk the bore is so small the valves and combustion chamber are shrouded they weren't designed to be upgraded they were the general motors corporate work horse good torque numbers but low hp ratings low compression. Engines and so it goes you wanna spend the money build a motor make it a 350 cause the 305 is not your best choice 327 you mentioned had a much bigger piston. But a shorter stroke so it goes again big jug short stroke motors spin Into the stratosphere but will make big power up there so they shrouded the valves made it so the heads can only flow like shit A small combustion chamber and a dished piston and the 305 can only be bored to about 40 over unless you stroke it that's it no more than 312

I remember all the hype over the 350 when it came out in 68-9. It was in response to the EPA regulations of the day. Their were several side by side comparisons in Hot Rod, Car Craft and Hot Redding magazine during the time when the 350 first hit the streets, and most of them showed that the 327 had more potential than the 350. Builds with the same cam, compression, rods, and manifolds repeatedly showed that the 327 was a more efficient engine, due to its bore to stroke and Rod length to stroke ratios! Why anyone would want a 350 is beyond me if they can find a 327 instead. The same with the 427 over the 454. The Rod length to stroke ratio of the 454 is downright crazy. Try to find a 454 crank, cast or forged, in the 70's and 80's and you'll pay and arm and a leg for the core charge on the 454. With a rod ratio near 1.5-1 it's easy to see why so many 454 cranks broke. The same with the aftermarket 383 and 400SB Chevies. Lost of them in every shops just iron pile, and not too many for sale. No we have an abundance of quality forging sand billet crankshafts and rods available, so it's easy to ignore bad rod ratios. It still takes its toll on the major thrust side of the block though, making bores egg shaped after a few years of wear. I'm glad these guys are building this 327!
@GlassTopRX7
@GlassTopRX7 7 жыл бұрын
For a street motor low end torque is what most people will care about. In both of your example the 350 and 454 torque comes on earlier. Both of them can rev pretty high as they have reasonable strokes. You make it sound like they are under square motor, they are still over square. If you compare the L76 327 with the LT1 350, nearly identical aside from the stroke, the LT1 made more torque and HP. Same is true of the L72 427 and LS6 454 which are the same aside from the stroke. Generally speaking these motor motor are still very close in performance when spec'd the same. I also in terms of reliability the 327 lags behind the 350 although mainly because of the small journal size. I think you would be hard pressed to make the case with the big blocks as well. As for reliability the extreme stroker motors seem to hold up pretty well, I know it surprised me. Sure they cant's reach very high revs but they have a massive displacement advantage to make up for it. I you can build a 327 or 427 to handle 7500rpm or you can stroke SBC to 420 or BBC 572 that only revs to 5500 but makes a metric shit ton more power. Also this is a 327 block bored and stroked to a 383.

GlassTopRX7 the small journal on the 327 does NOT make it less reliable, i have one and i have large journal 350 engines too.. if anything it is an advantage.. smaller journal takes less force to turn and wears less, it is true that the longer stroke in the 350 is better for emissions.. that being said a stock 327 is MUCH faster than a stock or even mild 350, however if you go all out and build a drag motor 327 and 350 from the ground up with the biggest camshafts and biggest upgrades that can be done to both.. yeah the 350 will be faster as it has more overall displacement and yes they have more torque but the 327 turns an unreal amount of rpms with that short stroke and they are really close in power and i'd even say the 327 is faster on the street when closer to stock form. the longer stroke engines have more torque on the bottom but the 327 has a power ban on the top that is hard to beat from 50-100 mph like on a short track for example.. but for overall top speed over 100 mph.. the bigger displacement the better, thats the same reason why Hemi's won so many superspeedway races in Nascar and the same reason they ran small block chevy's on short tracks back in the day.
@GlassTopRX7
@GlassTopRX7 7 жыл бұрын
The smaller journals wear faster and are weaker. In addition to that in high hp builds the are more prone to spinning bearings. If what you are suggested was the case the 302 would have retained the small journals, the change was made as result of high bottom end failure rate in competition. The revs don't matter with stock heads, all them made peak HP at or under 6500.
@Alex-pj8eu
@Alex-pj8eu 7 жыл бұрын
GlassTopRX7 no the reason they went to large journal 327's was because the 350's are large journals and came out in '67 and they wanted to have the same block casting for both the 327 and 350, its not because they had trouble or anything like that both large journal and small journal's are fine.. its just ideally the 327 was originally designed to be small journal, that being said large journal is ok too, there were no problems with either one. I have built small journal 2 bolt main 327's with roller cams and stock rods and NEVER had any issues. this is a moot point and minor differences were talking here but when I said large journals wear faster I was referring to 350's with the bigger cranks vs small journal 327's..
