These big block chevy engines were extremely reliable right out of the factory. Just put a better distributor, free flow air cleaner and headers and you had a real good street engine. The oval port heads were better all around for everyday driving. I had two 69 Camaro's, one was a SS 396 375 HP - L78, 4 speed with 4:56 rear gear, the other was a RS Z28 with DZ 302/290 HP and 3:31 rear gear. Both cars had the same wheels and plate number (you would never get away with that today!). I would use the big block for street racing and the small block for road racing. Nobody ever caught on and it was lots of fun. The good old days of cheap beer and cheap high octane gas right out of the pump. The high octane pump gas is long gone but not the memories.

There was a Sunoco about 45 minutes from my house that sold 100 octane at the pump. Last time I stopped by that gas station was probably 2008. They had all the normal pumps in front of the store and then that single pump in the back of the lot. Now we have E85 which ranges from 51%-83%.

Jack Petracci I don’t think so! I know a guy who bought a 1970 Chevrolet SS LS6 454 and engine was 280hp at wheels on dyno if you factor in the 15% loss through driveline that is not even 450hp. No way it was near 500hp. Was this 427 rebuilt to factory specs for say a Yenko Camaro? Or better parts than factory specs?

Yes they were. Anyone who studies the history of the first gen camaro's knows this. General Motors was underrating these cars before Nickey Chevrolet, Don Yenko, and Fred Gibb were making orders to the Factory. These guys were pulling motors out of the 69 Corvettes and souping them up even more before they dropped them in the Camaro's. A granddaughter of Nickey Chevrolet told us that they were putting 600 and 700 hp motors in cars back then!

Man am I jealous!!! My Pop and I built my 69 elCamino back in the 80's. I looked for over 2 years for a 427 that wasn't ridiculously priced. I wanted the 427 for the fast rev you get from that shorter stroke than a 454. I didn't want a 396 so I was looking for the 427. After searching for so long I settled for a 454. That was the last engine my Pop ever built. We didn't have access to a dyno so i have no numbers. Let's just say it was stout. I miss that car more than any I've ever owned. Data: 1969 elCamino, 454 with a Holly 650 vacuum secondary riding on the stock intake, Hedman Headers, Factory SS gauges, bucket seats, Hurst Competition Plus shifter, Muncie M22 Rock Crusher, Appliance mags shod with BFG TA Radial tires, 3:31 posi rear, and 1200 watts of Alpine stereo. It was "arrest me red" and had the correct black SS stripes. It didn't matter how I drove this thing, it got a reliable 9 MPG. Never less, never more. God I miss those days!!!

To give you an idea how much they under rated the ZL1 engine...My engine has a roller cam with a fairly smooth idle.(not very lopey). And my compression ratio is only 8 3/4 to 1. Someone knows his math. As not many people can get those results from an factory produced engine. Unless they have an en-depth understanding of cam profiles and crankshaft designs. Wish I had that knowledge 40 years ago. I would have looked like a genius on a budget. Great Stuff!

I used to work at mosler aero-automotive bout a decade ago before I worked at Ferrari.but anyway long story short warren mosler held a auction and we were getting stuff together and we found a brodix motor and a genuine MARK 4, 427 RAT engine. it was in a old crate. the crate looked to be 30 or 40 years old. I really couldn't believe my eyes. the brodix looked like it had to be 500ci

Hey Pete I did a 427 up back when I had no idea what I was really doing...up to this point I guess I just got lucky....I bought and had machined everything to do a 430 hp 427. The machine shop didn’t mill the heads enough for the valve springs to set lower for the higher lift cam....wiped the cam in minutes sent crap everywhere in the engine. Started over checked everything out better during the build this time and it ran great for a day....and would not start the next morning ... tore it back down and the distributor gear was eaten off and the cam gear in bad shape...I was broke and to this day still wondering why? Put the 402 BB back in and never looked back
@PetesGarage
@PetesGarage 5 жыл бұрын
That is a huge bummer! If you don't set the distributor end play it will chew up the gear. If it's too tight the pin will shear and it's all over from there. That would have been a great engine for you.

509 @5800 Damn GM sure underrated that one! I bought a hondo pickle fork hydro that had a 427 dart/domi and a .610 x255 cam. It ran kinda ok until the blocked cracked. I took it all apart, it had std l88 pistons, dimple rods and the right rect port closed chamber heads.Replaced the block, put in a .700 x275 roller, flycut the pistons and swapped the single carb for 660s and a t/r, After some carb mods the thing hauled ass. If a stocker made 509 mine had to be 600+. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5uVdmahfNuipM0 After that i swapped the 40 gears for 22s and picked up 11 mph best of 119 mph gps @7300 rpm..i used to run upriver at 6500 rmp 10 min at a time..Ran the motor 150+ hrs and never had a problem. As far as i am concerned the 427 makes more hp per dollar than any other motor made and with proper assembly they dont break

It is almost stock... Dyno tests obviously had large tube headers (watch video). On a big engine with a lot of cylinder head that would likely add 40-60 HP. Real HP with factory exhaust manifolds is probably more like 450 HP. Nothing to sneeze at for sure, but a lot of builders run "Stock" engines with Headers to post impressive numbers.

A 402 with a 454/502 crank is also 427 cu.in. and they made some 402 with a tall deck. I wonder how the dyno numbers would compare to an actual "factory" 427. Peak's would likely be the same, but I'm wondering about the shape of the curve on the graph as you take the engine from low rpm up through high rpm.

The best thing to improve stock engines from this era is to convert the old points distributor to HEI. Points were very inconsistent, couldn’t handle the rpms and you weren’t getting a full 12 volts. This combined with an advance recurve and dialing in the jetting ( on a stock production engine) could potentially give you another 30-40 hp. You only have to sneeze on a big block to get power out of it. It cracks me up that the 70s and 80’s even 90s big blocks were so weak. You have to go out of your way to NOT get horse power on one of these engines.

You're probably right about the gas. I'd like to see what that engine could do with some race gas. That's probably as close to 60's high test leaded fuel as anybody can get nowadays. I think you might still be able to get low leaded fuel for aviation,maybe for boats? I was salmon fishing up in a little town called Sekiu WA. They had a pump labeled leaded for boats only. Idk if there was really leaded gas in the pump? Idk if that pump was actually even being used. Maybe it was only there because everything was really outdated up there. LOL!
