Welcome to my KZbin channel. This channel is the home for all your vintage Mid-Year Corvette content. In today's video we are testing my 327 build at Rhodes Performance. They built the 327's in our other 2 Corvettes to stock specifications. This time I wanted to have a little more fun. I opened up my check book and went full send!! If you enjoyed this video check out Motortrend's Engine Masters. They had a couple 327's built and they are rippers also. Mine is a little more tame than theirs but we hit the nail on the head with this combo!!
I forgot to mention the lift on the cam. It’s .555/.555. Below is the link for the cam.

I just finished restoring a 1963 Corvette Split Window and I am starting another split window build but this time its a race car build. I will be making videos twice a month on the car so please like and subscribe. I will be making videos on my 1963 Corvette Split Window, my dad's 1965 Corvette, my race car split window build, my friends 1960 Corvette, and other projects that I find along the way. Let me know what you think about the video. Enjoy!!
If you are interested in an official MYM hat or if you have any questions please send me an email to midyearmitch@gmail.com.
Sit back and enjoy the show!

Way before Chevrolet "claimed credit" for it ... we were taking a 327 block, with a 283 crank, 12.5 -1 pistons, 375 solid cam (no rollers then), a 750 dominator, and FI heads. We were making over 500 hp and, not only that, the engine would last an entire season in my 1957 Chevy Coupe while running the quarter mile stock car track in West Branch, Michigan. Not only did it generate the HP, it would spool RPM's so quick out of a corner you truly had a big advantage on the field. Such a great experience.

@@SteveoGregg Yes ... they installed it in the Z28 Camaro along with Chambered Exhaust. The engine was cranking 500HP but they advertised it at 350HP to mitigate liability. Not only did it have the HP, the 283 crank allowed it to build the HP very fast because of the short stroke. One of their best-ever engines.

@@douglaslambert579I remember that. Don't know if you were alive then but it was the beginning of the deescalation of HP ratings for insurance purposes. The manufacturers were advertising lower HP than they were producing. Also, car owners all thought they were Mario Andretti and killing themselves in droves.

I had a very similar set up just like this! 327 bored .062 over, AFR 195 64cc heads, JE forged pistons, titanium wrist pins, Carillo H beam rods and a Crower Billet steel crank. Solid roller cam and edelbrock torquer II intake and a demon 750 carb. It ran like a scalded ass rabbit and revved to 8500. Most people dont know how wicked these 327s can be.

A good analogy for piston speed is to think of a football field. A 327 and 350 for comparison. If one runner represents the 327 and one reps the 350. Both need to start at goal line(BDC) run to a distance out(TDC) and back to the goal line (BDC) again arriving at the same time. The 327 only needs to run to the 30 yard line(short stroke) but the 350 would need to run to the 40 yard line(longer stroke). So to arrive at the same time back at BDC the 350 runner needs to run faster to make up the extra distance. Extra stress and inertia to contend with. Not to scale i know but I think it works. Then there’s the small journal compared to a large journal which is like a merry go round. Outside rider, large journal needs to cover more distance which equals needing more speed to arrive at one full rotation (360deg) at the same time as inside rider the small journal.

Shifting at around 8 grand happened every day and Id give most anything to have had it dynoed back then. But the sound and way it carried gave me memory goosebumps. It stopped making HP around 8500 because of valve float is my guess now. over45 years later.

Seeing yours, I might just pull the 327 on my recently acquired C2 and copy yours (with slightly more emphasis on the low end power). All I really care about is leaving a little rubber between stoplights. One question tho.... What type fuel are you going to run? I'm running both my 11:1 compression vettes on 91-93 octane pump gas now w/ no pinging.

Thanks Dr Lee. I’m really happy with this combination. Dan built a baaaaad 327. If you want the specs I can send them to you. I have the full parts list. Email me at midyearmitch@gmail.com and I can send it to you. If you put a good air gap dual plane intake on it that will bring a lot of low end power back. You could also swap the cam out for one that favors a lower rpm range. Dan said run the highest pump octane you can for cruising. If I am going to put a lot of load on it he said to run over 100 octane or throw octane booster in it to bring it over 100.

Life happen and over time...the car and everything else was sold. I was married and then divorced and....well...I lost it. Never fired it up. This has always bothered me. I disagree with your explanation at 7:50 suggesting the 327 has a small bore compared to other engines that make 500 horsepower. It doesn’t have a small bore, as a 4” bore is not considered small. Way too many variables; piston to deck height, static compression, dynamic compression, overall cam specs, cfm velocity, etc. A shorter stroke raises the RPM band so everything that I mentioned needs to be symmetrically pieced together for that range.

Great set up I got my 327 in the garage tore apart trying to figure out what way to go lots of people say make it a 383 but always love the old school 327 if I can get close to the 500 hp all is good with that. You said you had a build sheet would like to get my hands on it.

Nice motor. Honestly you could have used a tick more cam to easily acheive those numbers. Those big 210's were carrying it up on the top end. Great job!

Thanks Chris I appreciate it! I'm actually glad I didn't go any bigger on the cam. It sounded radical and made good power. With the rear gear that was in the car and the close ratio muncie it liked to chug at slow speeds. The car just wanted to go haha.

Awesome man!!! How much would you say for this package? Already have the 4b main, 327, w original fuelie heads. Been waiting years and years to do this to my old Caprice. From what I understand, this motor is stock with 400 lbs torque. Apparently, by the recall torque cables from gm, it is the same as the vette motor. Any help would be nuch appreciated. If you could possibly map out the costs with parts that would be amazingly helpful.

Great combo, only the intake won't feed those heads. That's an old school intake on heads that needs more intake. The vic Jr was made for old double hump heads, because there wasn't much around for aftermarket heads back then.

@inscoredbz I wouldn't say that at all, the Victor Jr is probably a pretty good choice for a 210 runner. Over a 220 i'd look into a Super Vic or equivalent imo. Have you seen the intake testing Eric Weingartner has done on youtube? The Victor Jr was yielding the best numbers on 200-215cc heads. Maybe there is something magic about the specific intake he used idk but it's pretty amazing when you see the rest of the field and the mule was a 406. I felt the 327 here left some on the table, maybe cam specs, cam timing or valve springs, something and while it didn't exactly lay over it didnt run out up there like it should. I figured with the head flow of those AFRs it would see high 5xx range near 6, I didn't hear a lot of info, fuel, timing, jetting none was mentioned. I wonder if the 195s mightve had better average numbers the way it was setup, and for multi purpose events mightve felt better in the driver's seat.

I knew a man in the 70s using a blown 327 making close to 1150+ HP at over 10,000plus rpm , he had to pull the shoot dump the boost gate lever shut off the fuel lever off befor taking his foot off the throttle at finish line or it would grenade the engine . I don't know the exact numbers here but he was untuchable when the planets aligned and he got things right in the 70s, using old Detroit diesel engine parts.

Compression and rpm, that how you make hp with small cid. With a small .555 lift cam i would have said less than 500hp. I still think you need more cam with those heads. But results are dam good.

Mine has an 8 qrt oil pan and at the finish line I lost oil pressure, all the oil was in the top of engine and oil pump started to suck air bouncing oil pressure. Just curious , my shirt point was 7500 and the finish line rpm was about the same.

Personally I wouldn’t have put a bigger carburetor what I would do is adjust the timing and play around with the Jets why do people always think you need some crazy big Carburetor I’ve seen big block 454’s making almost 600 hp with a 650 CFM carb bigger isn’t always better but Nash motor nonetheless now you just have to put a compound turbo set up
