When I was a young teen, our youth pastor drove into the church parking lot in a '64 Fairlane 500 4 door sedan in silver with a red interior. It had a 289 and 4 speed which none of us kids had ever seen before as 4 speeds were mostly in 2 door hardtops. I would love to have one like it now.

I've got a 1964 Fairlane 500. Bought it in 1989. It had 73 000 miles on it. I'm 2bd owner. Now the car has 485 000 miles on it. I'd class it as a nice driver. Car is white with Ivy Gold interior. It a Fairlane 500. Currently runs a 420 hp 331 c.i. engine w AFR aluminum heads Air Gap manifold Long tube headers into 2.5 in exhaust. Full roller setup cam and 1.6 rockers. 10.1 to 1 compression. Runs on 91 octane fed to engine by Holly 3310. ALUMINIUM RADIATOR w 6 blade declutch fan .Group 27 battery relocated to trunk in poly vented box over right rear. Tremec 5 speed w .7 O D and 3.55 gears in an 8 inch locker rear.. in O D every 1000 rpm is good for 30 mph. I've had it to 5000 in O D. The car felt dancey at that speed probably due to front end lift. Although I've done what I reasonably could with the suspension its not a lot. Mainly because the suspension is unique to that car that model that year. Period. I do have Bilstein sport shocks on it 800 lb front springs and 350 rear leaf springs Runs a 1.25 front sway bar an export brace very rare piece and a Monte Carlo bar tied into the shock towers . I boxed the lower control arms. It runs 7 inch 5 spoke American mags front 8 inch in back wheels are 15s currently running T A radials. Front disk rear drum brakes. Car is and was a full power air car when I got it and still runs the Undedash selectaire unit although a small Sanyo compressor replaced the original compressor. Its a bench seat car with 3 gages and tach mounted under dash. I've owned a lot of cars in my life but this overall is the simplest most fun most reliable car I've ever owned. It does everything pretty well including handling the occasional 1969 Z28 Camaros which is always fun . Beating up on hot rodded trucks is fun also. It doesn't attract cops even running at 90 mph down the freeway. I mean after all a white coupe.... The guy in the video has a wonderful car. But I've got a nice one I can drive every day. The paint is getting tired on the top and zivr got to repaint the top otherwise paint is original. Rear interior i a original. Time to replace the front seat upholstery and carpet though. Its showing signs of wear. He's right about one thing. Parts are almost impossible to find for it. It took me two months to find a wiper switch for it. In 2000 I built a Thunderbolt clone. Very correct car. Maroon w correct 427 dual quad engine top loader 4.10 9 inch rear. Etc. Not a practical car but a lot of fun. Of course it was a sedan not a coupe.

Lou:Very nice car and owner. The engine is one of Ford's best V8'S. The K code refers to the hi performance version of this 289 CID V8 which is rated at 271 HP. This is due mainly to the camshaft and 4bbl carburettor. I've worked on several of these Ford V8's in the past. Like any Ford fan will tell you Ford means; FAST ON RACE DAY! Please keep these wonderful videos coming.

I had a Honduras Maroon version of this exact car back in 1964. I bought it at TASCA Ford in RI new. It got side swiped totaled while parked and I then bought a black/black '64 Falcon Sport Coupe that TASCA Ford built in-house with a 289 HiPo engine and a B/W 4 speed transmission plus 9" rear differential. I would later trade that in for a '67 Fairlane XL/GT 427 that TASCA Ford also built in-house.

Hi Lou. You're taking me back!! We are all familiar with the terms Coupe and Hardtop and looking at this Fairlane one could ask "Whats so special about Sports Coupe to demand special badging"? This attractive roofline was borrowed from the T-bird. It was a hot look back then. Very nice. In fact the whole car says FORD....the trademark Ford large round taillights, the front borrows alot from the Galaxie. Steve

Hi Steve, Welcome to the time travel machine, and we're back in the Ford Showroom in 1964 :-) Not sure why "special badging" however I have a real liking when car makers do this. My thought is when you know it's limited and unique, generally people enjoy something unique and different. Hope that helps, Lou

Yes. An additional thought. Even the Stude Hawk used that same top around 64. It really doesn't match the car well, but it created interest. Keep your eye out for one!! Steve

Lou, what a car to go and see. a real magnificently restored vehicle. I didn't know the 289 had a thirty-two valve H.O. variant for 1964. that's one big ass "sports car!" i really appreciate the non-hurst original shifter with the little ball at the top. most of these manual transmission muscle cars, just HAVE to have the stupid handle top shifter for some reason or another. but that's not what the man was going for here. i'm guessing a bunch of the ninety-six were delivered in RED. maybe a snazzy burgandy or BRG would give the fairlane 500 some much-needed punch. a bright red vehicle on a crisp white carpet.. ok, ok..

you'd think that one of the manufacturers today could commemorate some of the classics with a 50 anniversary model with some chrome instead of plastic .No respect or tribute for there own success in the years when what you drove was a reflection of who you were

Hi julius ceasar, Occasionally we see a "retro version" of the 1955 T-Bird in 2005, late 1960's Mustangs, the late 1960's Camaros, the Dodge Challenger, and we have a version of the "Ford GT" back again, however I agree, it would be great to see a Retro 57 Chevy and lots of "Chrome" :-) Lou
@phantomstratocaster
@phantomstratocaster 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lou,Agree the 2005 t-bird was a decent effort but the one mustang that I have seen you review and a personal favorite of mine is the mustang GT/CS. As you know the CS was unique mustang in 68 in terms of style and appearance package which is easily recognizable today by the tail lights , chrome script writing on fender side scoops and badges and was not a fast back .The new 2019 rendition of the CS is the same as the basic mustang ,while I do understand that the 2019 is a appearance package its the lack of options on seats and wheels that take away from and do nothing to promote the history and desirability of this legendary car . The uniqueness of the gt/cs is you shouldn't have to customize it after sale,that's what the gt are for.They also missed the 50 anniversary model year 2018 I could have designed the graphics package for the gt/cs at no greater cost to the manufacturer and owners would pass them on as err looms .Even if production cost were a bit more , preserving a legend is while worth a little less profit for future gain and promotion of the next fifty years of the mustang. Ford has gotten complacent.

Seems funny that some of the cars of thst day did not get backup lights as a standard feature. The carmakers likely did not see the essense of such equipment. You may know the answer to that.

Hi Lou, great video as always! You always seem to find the rare and unusual in the car world! We had a 64 Fairlane Sports Coupe which Dad owned for 10 years. It was his baby and ours had a 260 V8 with 2 speed Fordomatic. Although ours had the bucket seats and console the shifter was on the steering column. Only the 4 speed and CruiseOMatic cars got a floor shift, but Dad was happy because he didn't like the floor shifter...

Lou Costabile Lou Ford built over 21,000 Fairlane Sports Coupe hardtops which came with a wide choice of V8 engines. I can't recall if they were offered with Ford's 6 cylinder, but the rarity of this car is that it was ordered with the 289 High Performance V8. Most of them were equipped with an automatic transmission so the 4 speed cars are quite rare.
