Diesel Creek, that tool you have is a barbwire fence post driver tool, you put it on the top of the metal post and drive it down into the ground with a 2 1/2 lb sledge hammer. you can still use it today, the posts it fits are still used and you can get them at most any farming store

Matt - I looked through the comments, but I didn't see that anyone had an explanation for the item you asked about at 25:06 - It's a device for pounding steel fence posts into the ground! The underside [not the part that's mushroomed] fits over the top of a steel fence post, then you hammer it into the ground using an 8 Lb. sledge hammer. A very useful find! I've never seen one like it. If you ever find it necessary to put in a barbed wire fence, you will be glad to have this little gem!

The object you found (the steel hockey puck) is for driving steel fence posts into the ground. It fits over the post top and then you slip a fencepost driver pipe over the top for extra weight. Its purpose is to protect the top of the post from mushing up and distorting when pounding the post in. Without its use, the post top can get so mushed up (upon re-use) that a post pounder will not slip over the post top any more. Pete from Prescott

@@endermwatts exactly. That’s to stop the post from mushrooming over.
@kameljoe213 жыл бұрын
You are right its an old school post driver. They were used in combination with a sledge hammer and the tool. The U shape metal post were very popular for use with barbwire and sheep fence due to its wave function that allowed you do adjust in small increments. Matter of fact I have a handful of those posts that I use from time to time. I did one of my old houses entire yard with those types of posts. They are far better than the new stuff and will be around far longer. I have pulled 10s of thousands of them and replaced with wood or new t posts.
@endermwatts3 жыл бұрын
@@kameljoe21 as long as I’ve been around we’ve always used the T shape and a driver that is basically a metal tube with a top and two handles welded on the sides. Slide her over the top and away you go. That and we always put a wooden post in concrete every tenth post.
@kameljoe213 жыл бұрын
@@endermwatts U post are still made today. They are mostly used in road work. You will find them used on signs and reflectors along the road side. I have built 100s of miles of fence many being t post and wood. Though I never use a hand driver unless I have to. T post are so easy to drive in with a bucket from a tractor or like equipment. A light weight pipe cut to length can be slid over the T post and then bucket applied downward to the length of said pipe. Giving you exact height every time. We almost never did wood post in a t post line. Though on a few jobs we have though never in concrete. For as long as I have been doing this concrete on wood posts do more harm than good. A proper brace is more than enough to support the line. Spacing really depends on your soil conditions and most places you can get away with a rod spacing. This makes for everything being pretty well spaced regardless as to how you build your fence.

Reminds me of working on an old rover with a pal. We dragged it to his house with a stick motor. Ended up having to soak the bores and stick it in 4th gear, pushing it back and to, to free it off.
@Whipple13 жыл бұрын
We’ve successfully done the same thing on a few ok’d tractors and trucks that were stuck. Used a mix of kerosene, transmission fluid and acetone. Filled up the cylinders and let them soak for a week to ten days. Forth gear and rocked them free with another tractor chained to them.
