lol man. I hate to ruin the surprise, but about a year into this product I had to bail. There wasnt a single piece of this camper that was worth keeping - Looking back I could have created one from scratch.

Im in Zimbabwe Africa and restoring a 1960s trailer. I feel your pain but it always looks worse than it is during the demo. The rebuild is a lot more fun and motivating. Mine had more holes than a vegetable colander. Im going to enjoy watching yours come together.

Brut force is correct! I just took my 1972 Mobile Scout Vaquero, down to he frame. Nothing was salvagable except the skin the door drame and the windows. (I could have reused the sinks, showerpan and cooktop but im not putting it all back in . Im reworking the wall construction and i must say the demo was a bitch. All those staples UGH!

I just bought a travel trailer myself. An old one that needs quite a bit of work. I'm going to be pretty much gutting mine as well. But here's the thing. I have no experience in fixing things. So I'm going to need help. I may be able to get that from some people I know. I think it needs electrical work as well. This is going to be a big challenge for me, the hardest thing I've probably ever done in my life just because of my profound lack of my experience. I hope to pull this off truly. My money is just so limited right now so I had to go cheap. I'm living with family right now but my time is running out here. Hoping to get this done in a fairly limited time. We'll see though.

My friend just bought a 1972 Kit Companion and stripped off everything. All the wood is rotten, even the floor. He asked me to rebuilt the floor and walls (structural wood, insulation and paneling) My question is... How long time do you estimate it would take? His goal is to transform this trailer into a food trailer, so after rebuilding the basic structure, we also have to install electricity, plumbing, kitchen appliances, etc...
@RoccosModernLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
So dude, if i had to do it again I would just take off the aluminum siding and demolish everything but the trailer. I spent months trying to rip this thing apart one piece at a time and replace it. Not to mention removing hundreds of stripped or rusted screws. If I could go back in time, I would buy a lightweight trailer and builder a vintages styled camper on top of it! I have 100+hrs of footage I will start editing when I finish moving, and the camper is almost fully secured but man has it been a pain in my ass lol
@ThomasDMT5 жыл бұрын
@@RoccosModernLifestyle so...you recomend building everything up again? Remove the aluminum foils, build the frame, and then...put the foils back. That sounds like a lot of work and time.
@RoccosModernLifestyle5 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasDMT I would honestly just scrap it all. Starting with nothing but rot and wear takes so much time, money and energy. I would buy an aluminum trailer, and start building it from scratch. Had I dont that to start, I would have saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

@@RoccosModernLifestyleWell, this is music to my ears. I just got an old 40's (maybe 50's) egg shaped travel trailer, everything scrapped but the frame and subfloor. Basically looks like a little trashed flatbed. Every piece of wood is coming off so the frame is bare metal to then build on. Only, I'm still researching how to approach this: Do I start with a wrench to old rusted bolts? Do I just saw these thick rusted screws off? Devil's in the details, apparently.
@dixiechampagne28923 жыл бұрын
@@mprudes I have a 59-61 (best guess) Layton 10-footer that is registered as a 2000 homemade trailer (ie, a pair of welder brothers fabbed up a more generous frame, then set the body on top, and a-hunting we will go!). I've saved and repaired all the original parts I could (badges, tag/light ass'y, the 2 remaining jalousie windows about which I'm writing a song...), and yes, mine has the aluminum skin with the pretty-colored side in, also. Rather than repair the rotten wood, a previous owner panelled the interior with 1x6 fence boards. I agree with Mr Mobiltec (Larry?) on working from the outside in, but I must simultaneously work from the inside out to remove a couple of botched redo attempts, then we meet in the middle. Since apparently this thing's been hit by a tree, I don't have all the original aluminum, so I'll remove said skin, make the repairs, then the street-side siding will move to the curb side, the original roof panels will morph into the street side, then I'll do the roof/ends in diamond-plate aluminum, one continuous roll to reduce potential leaks, and I'll make some funky MidMod details out of the scrap. I have that Haint Blue aluminum like he does, but also some that is butter yellow. As for rusted frame parts, I bought a needle scaler from HFT, will bust it down, use rust-converting primer, metal primer, then probably paint it with this gallon of white FlexSeal that's paid for. All the best with your project!

You are totally taking the structural integrity out of the trailer, you need to take it apart from the outside inward, that thing will fall apart going down the road now cause there is no structure now! Don’t believe me? Go check out mobiltech canned ham trailers he shows you how to do it proper!
