I could only hope and dream I could have such a car back in 1964. I got my first driver's license in 1964 and was driving my mother's '60 Corvair. Me and a buddy drove over to the local Hot Shoppes (where they had in-car service and all the hot car guys hung out). As we were driving up a new 1964 GTO was coming out. As he stopped at the main road waiting to merge -- he gunned the engine, and I saw the car pitch to one side from the engine torque! I thought, damn, such a hot car! Yes, Lou, watching all your hot car videos get my 71 year-old Adrenalin pumping!

Growing up in So Cal, a neighbor had an identical '64 GTO. Same color, 4 on the floor, and 6.5 liter V8. It didn't have the tri-power or the custom steering wheel. His son, who was a friend of mine, wanted the car. But his father he sold the car before my friend was old enough to drive.

Lou, are you aware that 1964 the GTO was only an option package for the Pontiac Tempest Lemans? 1965, GTO became its own stand-alone model. Initially, John Delorean had 5000 Pontiac Tempest Lemans with GTO package built without the GM executives knowing about it. When they found out, they were going to fire Delorean until he asked them what he should do about the 10,000 more units that had already been ordered by dealers nationwide. The rest is history.

All lead sleds after '64.Taller,longer, 400# pounds heavier. The '64 was designed for use in NASCAR,and this car,if raced, would have cut heavy into the Chevrolet market. Thus GM dumped NASCAR.Politics and Pontiac taking too much market share.GM basically shut Pontiac down at every point and all the good guys left.Pontiac even had a twin-cam motor in development at that time. But thru '67,the GTOs were the best looking cars out there.

Lou Costabile, unless I missed it do you remember if the present owner was of an age where he could of bought a GTO in 1964 but did not have the money or needed money for other things, etc? Or did he lust after this car that he was too young to buy at the time? Today, I find myself more interested in the cars that came out before I was old enough to buy one. I bought a ‘79 Trans Am new when I was 20 because that was the one that was out, but I really wished I was the age where I could have bought a new 1973 Trans Am. To this day it is my favorite style. I still have my ‘79, by the way, now 43 years old. I would be worried in talking to the original owner. If he had a passion for the car but had to involuntarily give it up for whatever reason; first child on the way, etc., he could be sad and want to buy it back. I would feel guilty in telling him ‘No, sorry’.

I was the the owner of this car when this video was filmed. In answer to your question, I was 14 years old when the GTO arrived in the fall of 1963. Had I been old enough and had the funds to purchase one my father would never have allowed it. When I spoke to the original owner he was really happy that I contacted him. I was shocked that I found him. I had a great time filming the video with Lou and I'm pretty sure he enjoyed the short ride we had. Over the years I lost alot of the enthusiasm I once had with old cars. I sold this car in March 2023 but I'll never forget the good times it brought and all of the thumbs up I got. Thanks everybody for all of the nice comments you made. What a car! Thanks Lou! John Strewe

Looking at the video it looked like it had window winders for the rear seat passengers. Can you just shine some light on this for me. Interesting point Ronnie and the Daytonas only had one hit song and it was little GTO. The record was used to promote the car the other side of the record was by the ripcords, and it was hey little cobra don’t you know you’re gonna shut them down which had one two years later Chevrolet use the same marketing technique on their SS 396 Chevelle it was saying by Paul Revere and the Raiders, and on the flipside the Cyrkle sang about Camaro, which was a smooth slower type song compared to Paul Revere and the Raiders more of a hard rock ‘n’ roll. I worked at a Chevy dealership when they had those records at the dealership naturally, I have lost track of those records through the years, they were 45 RPM just like Ronnie and the Daytona little GTO

just the basix ! ..how come GM auto owners are less likely to go with after market shifter grips on manual transmission control? answer: GM vehicles are less about "showing off," and MORE about enjoying the experience.

Great car Lou ... I hope 1 day you will do a 1956 Olds. 88 with the 3 Deuces ... My best friend had one in the 1960’s ... He would smoke everyone ... People would not believe how fast a big car could be .... Most people don’t know that Oldsmobile had a bigger automatic and stronger engine than any other GM car ... Hopefully you’ll do a very rare 56 with the 3 deuces one day ... Thanks Lou ....

Lou the detailed information on the introduction of his car was Amazing! Keep it up! Great question on if it was modified. What a clean and pristine trunk. They even had a jack instruction decal for Lou. Lou I'm older than you so the GTO and the song associated with it is part of the vivid memories of my youth. "Little GTO really look'n fine three deuces and a four speed and a 389. Listen to her tachin up now listen to her wine. C'mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out GTO. My memories please don't screw up this story.

Another MARVELOUS & AWESOME GTO! I love all GTOs regardless of what year they are. INTERESTING & INCREDIBLE Vehicle. I LOVE also the double headlight in front, very SYMMETRICAL with a bar in the middle, a REMARKABLE trademark of Pontiac. AMAZING Triple carbs, STUNNING! Engine block, love the aqua paint on it. What a BREATH TAKING sound of the engine, and a FLAWLESS, Chromed dashboard.

The original Tiger Paws on these '64s were a pastel orange (tiger orange).I never saw these on any other make at that timeThey are unavailable now,as in '65 they went with the bolder redlines.Redlines are available to this day,but you'll never see the originals again. They are not as bold and probably only '64 GTO owners would be interested for full authenticity.
