You keep the Goat and turn it over later to your kid there, cool Dad. I had a good friend who owned that model (1st year '64 in black). He ran 60s tires on the back, 4 barrel carb, and Muncie trans. It was his daily driver in high school (73-75). His gear set probably was in the 3.23 range because one night we went 140. Yes, the telephone poles looked like a picket fence . In fact. Dennis L. of Woodstock, Connecticut, once buried the 140 mph speedometer and snapped the cable. When he brought it to the shop to buy another cable, they asked him how' he broke it. Dennis told them he was "just driving along." Dennis was a good man, friend and driver. Sadly we lost him in his early twenties. 'Hearing that transmission whine and seeing that gunmetal dash really brought it all back. Thank you.

My first car was a 64 GTO I bought (used) exactly 49 years ago. (4-speed, tri-power, posi, 3.90 rear end). Had to sell it when I got drafted. I still fantasize getting another. The sound of those triple Rochesters kicking in is orgasmic. Brings back many fond street-racing memories.

Wow, I know what you mean. Back in the late 60's I had a 64 GTO with the 389 Tri-Power with Hurst 4 speed installed. It had a duntov grind 3/4 cam and 10.5:1 pistons. No headers, but just the dual exhaust. I had 41 street races with it and won 39. And the two that I lost I lost at the very top end. I would race starting at 30mph because I had really high gears (2,80) and off the line it was sluggish. But when you're moving, it was a beast and accelerated like you wouldn't believe! I loved that car and wish I had it today.

This is, bar none, the best GTO video I've seen BECAUSE I had almost the same car when I was 19. I'm almost 58 now... The blue interior, and the hood-up with Power NOTHING; plus the headers and Tri-Power, just brought me back. My car was rear-ended; sold; and wrecked within 2 weeks...the only surviving part...?...the hood. Went on another GTO. Your video is EXACTLY how I remember mine. Watching the pedals; shifiting; the sound and sudden-ness of the Tri-Power is refreshingly envigorating

I always liked the looks of this year the best. I was five when these came out and my ten year old brother was aware of them and would excitedly point them out and with exhilaration explain what one of the first muscle cars was all about. Still the best lookin' Pontiac. Never drove a Pontiac that wasn't "snotty".

My mouth is watering! Looks like a very straight car to me and she pulls real strong. I had 3 "Goats". A '66 with base 389 and 4 bbl.(Rochester), a '68 black/black(boy, was that ever a beauty) with hidden headlights. I had both of these in the early '70's before the oil crunch. In the mid-'80's I had a '67 with the 400 and hydramatic, turbo 400) dark blue/dark blue interior with factory Rally II wheels. Nice one and the prettiest of the three. Ah the memories. Ones like yours today can fetch VERY high $$$! Congratulations on such a great ride and very nice example.

I'm a BIG fan of Cameo Ivory paint on '64 GTO's, they're especially intimidating in code 'C' paint! I suppose it's the connection that Cameo Ivory has w/Arnie The Farmer's "White Tornado"! I was 16 when the GTO was introduced in Sept. of '63. The guy who I bought my Milw. Journal route from had a black post coupe. When you looked under his GTO what caught your eye were the 2 massive slicks crammed inside the wells, & the differential looked like a small "period" between those huge meats! I never heard or saw his GTO run @ Union Grove Dragaway but it looked plenty scary in the garage as I walked up the driveway to deliver his Journal. My friend the owner went on to serve in the AF who flew the Douglas A1-E Skyraider in Vietnam. When I became a Marine a bit later, my time in 'Nam was '68 & '69. .

They say the 64 GTO is the 1st muscle car do to its engine power & mostly its weight. It made 348 HP & 428 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. It weighed 3,500 lbs. The 62 Impala 409 made 360 hp and 409 lb-ft of torque & weighed 3,500 lbs. 0-60 6.3 seconds. They are close. So there is the question. Why isn't the 62 Impala considered the 1st muscle car??? Love both. Just trying to get edjumacated!

Sweet ride, and a nice video of the ride-a-long. Some-one who actually opens the end carbs. Well done. One minor critique tho. He mentions, "syncing" the carbs. Not needed. The end carbs don't have idle circuits. Still a great car, and video. Thanks for posting. (Still got it?)

Bud, Ive studied, worked, modified, raced, restored these cars since I was 5 and my family has been in the racing and Automotive industry since 1920. I have over 40k pictures from 1950-1974 and have the facts to back up my statements and I have talked to some of the most famous people in drag racing from the 50's-60's and early 70's. Hell my house is on top of Green Valley drag strip. I am a Mopar fanatic but Love GM products, but dont take me for my word go look it up, get a few books on it.

That's an awesome GTO. I love everything about it including the Keystone wheels. The ride-along could have been better though; it was hard to tell how fast the car is accelerating through the gears when the camera is usually on the gauges. what's up with that? It was frustrating watching it during the ride along and I suppose that's why several viewers gave you a thumbs down on it. I wont rate it one way or the other, and thanks for posting it... a cool GTO you should be proud of.

i don't mean to start an argument here, but the gto when it was first introduced in 1964 it was able to keep up with the 64 Ferrari GTO. which was supposed to be real hot shit. so i don't know where you're gettin off sayin the Pontiac GTO wasn't fast. and they were meant for the middle class with an average sticker price of $2500.

Research shows that the first muscle car was likely the 1938 Buick Century. The huge 141hp, 320ci OHV Buick Roadmaster engine and 3-sp trans was installed into the small Buick Special chassis and renamed the Century. Police got on to using the Century as there was nothing that could outrun it. Hot rodders of the 40’s also used this engine in coupes and roadsters. Buick claimed that its 1938 Century models were the fastest U.S. production-based cars on the road. In fact, at the GM Proving Grounds, one Century was clocked at a top speed of 103 mph. A 1938 Century sport coupe held the NHRA class record into the 1950’s.

That was the lower end GTO, if you follow the price as it went on through out the years the price vs other muscle cars skyrocketed. With every option checked for the GTO in 64 it would cost you 4500 dollars. Which Mopar was selling there racing Hemi in a 65 Coronet with aluminum fenders for 3900.

Nice car, but a few pokes at you......you shift like your in cold molasses, you said "period correct" wheels.....NO KEYSTONE CLASSICS ARE PERIOD CORRECT FOR MID 70'S....wud look MUCH more muscle car like with stock rally 1's....and prettier.....next, you said it had a cam in it.....i hear no lope, and 6X heads only reduce your compression and flow less than like a nice set of #48's or 62's from the late 60's.....Nice car tho....i'm a Pontiac aficionado...own a 64 Tempest, with a LARGE motor in it......wud just like to see "period correct" Rims, and dont brag about a cam with no lope, your heads make the car slower.....i know every Pontiac head, and its flow......your 6X's aren't doin you any favors, however, i REALLY dig the car....just tryin to give you some food for thought..keep Poncho's alive, and hope i havent hurt your feelings too bad....PEACE my fellow Poncho owner..

Just like the Mustang wasnt the first pony car, the 64 1/2 Plymouth Barracuda came out 2 weeks before the Mustang but because the Mustang had a huge commercial push behind it and lets face it looked a lot better it is thought of as the first Pony car.
