Join in with the Turnin Rust crew as we flash back into this forgotten 1965 Datsun 320. After sitting abandoned for over 30 years, the team jumps through the obstacles in hopes to see this ol' girl running under her own power for the first time in over 3 decades. Will it run or is this just a cool piece of yard art?

I remember these trucks when I was little in rural Kyoto. They were amazingly popular both on the farms and in the urban sections. There weren't "caps" or bungee cords" at that time so stake bodies or tarps were the big thing to contain the loads which is why they have those hooks around the bodies for easy use. In my childhood memories, I can see them piled high with all sorts of goods moving about. Because of Japan's tiny alleys, these were the "bigger" delivery vehicles of their day with the even smaller 3-wheel Bata bata taking up the slack. I wish you guys would use a muffin tin when you do this. You guys are always pulling these vehicles apart and putting things down all over and it drives me crazy.

I had that same engine in a car. Small but mighty. That thing topped at 105 mph and easy to work on. That "old" looking box was the same style used up into the 70s.

Back in the early '70s my brother had a Datsun, it was an orange four-door little car. We lived about 50 miles from the beach and he was a surfer. There were lots of surfer guys in our neighborhood and I remember many days with six people in this car driving that distance to the beach. We didn't always have six people but that car drove for years and years and we drove back and forth to the beach more times than I can remember. I remember when he saw that he hated to see it go but he needed something bigger and it still drove just as good as the day he got it. Good old time :-)

I was so Happy to see you get this truck and get it running! The sound alone brough back many happy times. Oh, and the fender mirrors are the stock ones.

I've been a Datsun fan since the early 90s. I've had 3 zs, 3 510, a roadster, 620, 720, 200sx. I love the fact that they are popular again. Suck, squeeze, bang, and she'll blow! Get it cleaned up, repair the rust, put it on a more modern frame, drop it. Cool little shop truck. Datsun/Nissan knew exactly what they were doing.

The switching of petals reminded me of faculty member of my high school had a car that they used the clutch petal as the gas petal. I went to pull in into the garage to do an oil change and mashed the clutch petal and the brake petal at the same time. I banged into the door. The teacher was disabled and had to use her left foot on the gas (clutch petal). It was an automatic transmission, but when you see a clutch petal, you instinctively mash it to the floor. It had 2 gas petals and 1 brake petal.

Here some pointer to help you all in the future, when dealing with older ignition system. A: Those canister type ignition coils dont like being mounted on there side and will leak out all there oil, damaging coil in the end. B: Those type coil are marked for use with a resistor for the points ones or for use with electronic ignition where the resistor is not used. For the resitor type, a ballast resistor must be used to drop the voltage to prevent overheating the coil or putting undue arc across the points. When converting to electronic ignition, the ballast resistor gets removed from the loop to give full voltage to the coil. C: Its not good on the coil, for it to be making large arcs and puts extra stress on the coil. Its better to use a dwell meter, to check the points for function with the hole ignition system hooked up. Leaving the plugs resting on grounded metal is fine when not wanting to start the engine, since limits the distance the spark has to jump to ground. A fluke 78 or 88 is a example of a usefull meter that comes with the dwell option.

I worked at a dealership in the 70s and we'd see one of these from time to time. For some reason most of the mechanical parts were available well into the 80s. Clutch master and slave cyls were a very common replacement item. Frozen wheel cyls were also a thing on just about every brake job.

I had a 1964 Datsun 1200 when I lived in Ecuador in the 60s. It was just like that one but did not have a box on the back. It was integrated with the cab. It was a duplicate of a Fiat 1100, but it was reliable. It had four on the tree, but the shift patern was backwards. It was a nice little truck.

My friend's family had one of these in the 70's. He joked that if you looked underside of the hood you would see the beer can labels. One winter we were out driving snd pulled up next to a full size chevy truck up to the doors in deep snow. We were driving on top of the snow without sinking.

The distributor cap has threaded pins inside the holes that the spark plug wires thread onto. To remove the old ones just twist them counter clockwise and they will unthread and to put the new ones in, just cut them to length and twist them into the holes until they bottom out. The pins thread themselves right up the center of the wires. That gas tank is from a snow blower. I am thinking that if you were to take apart the clutch master cylinder you will find it is just stuck and with a disassembly and a cleaning it will probably work. For some reason the rubber cups in those old Datsun master cylinders don't seem to fail very often and they often just need a good cleaning to work again.

I had a 1971 620. On a 30 mile commute, the slave cylinder failed. To get home, I killed the engine,, put it in first, then started the engine. That got me rolling, then I shifted without the clutch and came on home. Bought that little beauty in 1978 for $1200 and sold it in 1983 for $1200.
