In this 1965 Ford Mustang Restoration video, I work on fixing some transmission issues. I replace the filter and pan gasket. I also repaint the pan with semi-gloss Duplicolor engine enamel. I accidentally add in the incorrect fluid and have to drain the whole transmission system and replace it with the correct fluid. I also remove the front driver's side fencer in order to get the door mounted back onto the car.

She's coming along, you might want to look on the side of your transmission where your shifter connects for the leak. There is a small rubber bushing where your shifter arm enters the transmission case that is prone to wearing out. There are a number of videos on KZbin that show you how to replace the seal. Best of luck and don't get frustrated you are doing great 👍

There is also an o ring for the kick down lever shaft inside the Trans shifter shaft that can leak as well.

I use a farm implement paint on the suspension and frame rails on my 69 satellite. Its tough as woodpecker lips lol. Oil based, chip resistant, rust resistant. Brush it on or use a electric wagoner power painter. I like your style. Cant wait to hear those old tailpipes bellow a tune.

Hey bud just dropping in i ran a transmission business for years now im in a dealership but that besides what im going to get to. On them old c4's with the original transmission pans. Them pans are made of thin metal. Theyll deform around the bolt holes. If you're still experiencing trans pan leakage, i suggest when you remove the pan, to flatten out the pan where the bolt holes are and get you some flat washers to put on the bolts so it allows a wider area to stress the pan onto the gasket. Also, i suggest using a cork gasket. YES a CORK gasket. Dress the panside of the gasket with formagasket and torque to specifications. Them thick rubber gaskets can give alot of headaches for everyone when they dont do what they are suppose to. I wish you the best of luck with your restoration my friend! Love the content!

Sorry it is giving you issues with running. I have a C4 trans as well. It had sat for 22 years before I got her running and moving again. I also replaced the filter and gasket on the trans along with the O-ring on the dip stick and replaced the cooler lines. It still took it about 6 months for the seals to stop leaking. No leaks now and it shifts great.

Common leaks on those, dipstick tube, shift shaft seal, if the neutral safety switch is not aligned right it won’t start, and they take type F only if they haven’t been rebuilt recently otherwise you’ll cook it. These are awesome cars! I’m just putting the final touches on mine

I do the same thing with my jackstands and floor jack. Make sure you are chalking the back wheels and have the emergency brake on too. Also, I'd maybe put it up a few more notches on the jackstands so you can have a little more room under there. Lastly, your upper control arms (and lower) will likely need to be replaced. CJ Pony Parts has a nice front-end suspension kit for about $400. The only challenging part is using a spring compressor (you can rent from the auto parts store) and also a pickle fork to break the ball joints loose. Good luck. Keep it coming.

Last Ep:#7 You mention Shocks KYB + Rear Springs. Rock Auto has all that for really cheap compared to the regular mustang's parts outlet. should check it out on regular wear parts as it Alway's cost less w/ same brands. Mustang outlets for cosmetics parts + parts no longer produce.

I just went through a C4 fluid leak nightmare. One not obvious thing to check is the gap between the bellhousing and the transmission body. There is a rubber seal there and if it's bad, will give you a pretty bad leak. Trans has to come out to replace it but you can do it yourself. That and the front and rear seals are other potential old age leaks. I rebuilt my C4 having never done an automatic before and it isn't that hard if you wind up needing to.
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
Good to know! Thank you!
@quyle9483
@quyle9483 Жыл бұрын
Not all the c4's are designed this way. This design with the rubber o ring between the bell housing and transmission case was on c3 transmission which eventually turned into an a4ld which also used this rubber o ring. Most c4 had no seal connecting bellhousing to transmission. The seal that barrier all that was a gasket the pump bolted onto mating to the case.
@quyle9483
@quyle9483 Жыл бұрын
It is possible you a referring to the transmission pump seal. Which in that case all automatics have. I doubt he has a front pump seal leak however because pump seals tend to leak under pressure via engine rotating torque converter.
@mongrelmotorsports
@mongrelmotorsports Жыл бұрын
This car would have a 'green dot' C4, and I can assure you it has the big rubber ring just like the one in my 66 Falcon. The pump seal is behind the converter and easier to diagnose where the fluid will drip out. With a car this old and apparently unmolsted I think he'd be wise to pull it out and give it a re-seal at minimum. When that big bellhousing seal leaks, it REALLY leaks. Guess how I know?
@quyle9483
@quyle9483 Жыл бұрын
@mongrelmotorsports yeah 64-68 c4 has bellhousing o ring.

There is a Vent on top of the transmission. That's where your leak is.
@GeorgiaRidgerunner
@GeorgiaRidgerunner Жыл бұрын
the c4 has a vent on the top of trans if you poured 4 quarts in and it leaked out from the top then you absolutely over filled it also that c4 trans pan gasket you need the paper gasket the goofy parts store rubber ones or those cork gaskets absolutely cannot be stopped from leaking i tell you this from my own experience from when i built my truck (72 ford f100)
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I found it was leaking from the shaft seal and the rear seal, so I just replaced those in my latest video. I also used the new rubber gasket, but put permatex ultra black on both sides, so hopefully that keeps it from leaking. If it fails, I have a paper gasket I can replace it with!

was literally just looking this morning to see if you had a new video up yet. bummer to hear about the leaks. part of working on cars is the unknown drama that comes up. im getting closer to the point of putting engine and trans back in mine and dread what may come up as a result when i do. hope you get the issue figured out. from the video it looks like all you did was remove the pan and change the filter so not sure what would have occured to make it not start now. have you checked the neutral saftey switch. i believe its located there near the pan on the transmission and can cause issues with starting if its not working properly
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
That's awesome! Yeah it turned out to be the points. I traced it back to electrical and was stumped, so I decided to clean the point and got more spark. Then just ended up putting in a electronic ignition and it immediately fired up! It's also running so much smoother now. That will be in my next video!

Good times Hunter 😂. These early transmission were pretty forgiving. If you didn’t use type F it’s ok. It wouldn’t mess things up. Heck of you were stranded and on a pinch. You could get away with normal ATF which will be fine for power steering systems as well the early ones I mean. Fluid came out your vent on top of trans. It’s fail safe. You were right soon as you start the engine. It would of taken on the rest of fluid and circulate through the trans. So far so good great work Guido 👍🏼
@quyle9483
@quyle9483 Жыл бұрын
@luckyluciano4968 right on good sir. However, should definitely avoid multi vehicle trans fluid now adays due to all the different friction modifiers they have added for these newer type transmissions. The friction plates used in an original c4 won't like that( over a period of time). However just to top off fluid or emergency fluid is better than no fluid!
@VanHoutenBuilds
@VanHoutenBuilds Жыл бұрын
@@luckyluciano4968 Thanks Guido! Yeah I figured it was some type of overflow valve after I started her up and circulated the fluid! Good to know it wasn't that big of a deal to put regular ATF in it, oh well. Haha

Only mentioning this because you are using the word "restoration" here. The correct grill paint for a '65 Mustang is charcoal blue. Ford pretty much did not use absolute black on any grills back in those days. It's your car so you can do whatever, but if anybody is going for a factory look on any model Ford or Mercury, they should research stuff like this first. Good luck on your continuing project.
