I'd go thru that engine. I burned up a stock 396 in one evening. From the factory they were not made for much when I could tear it up that easily.

I ordered my 1966 Chevelle SS396 from McManus Chevrolet, Chicago, IL March 17th, 1966. Options: Muncie 4 speed (M21), Positraction (G80) with 4.10:1 Gear Ratio, and AM Radio (U63). Dealer called a few days later and said the factory said there would be an extensive delay because they didn't have enough 325HP 396 engines to support my order, but they did have plenty of 360HP 396 engines available and asked if i was willing to add this option ($105.35), I agreed to that. So they did. Car was delivered 6 weeks later.

The 66 SS didn't have power steering or power brakes , and I have Two 138 SS right Now , but I'm a small block man and both have built 327 in the 600hp range , 11 inch clutch, Lakewood Blow Proof bell housing, M-21 Muncie 4 speed and 12 bolt posi rear end , one does 5.5 sec in 1/8 mile
