Jay, my high school auto shop teachers jointly bought one of these in the early 70's and had it in the shop. It was so cool to come to shop every day, the aura of the Ferrari dominated the atmosphere. I never saw them working on it and I never saw it run but I've never forgotten it either.

Obsessed with unique historic mechanical engineering and can talk cars with the best of em'. Really wish I'd get an opportunity to work with and maintain these mechanical triumphs. The story behind why the velocity stacks on those Webbers are designed and shaped the way they are is probably just as interesting as the rest of the chassis.

Jay, I used to work in a Speedometer repair shop and the speedo is an easy fix. It's not the cable, although it should also be serviced. The speed-cup inside the speedo head is becoming frozen and the vibration from the shaft binding and squealing loosened the needle. If not fixed, speedo will freeze up and twist off the speedo drive cable. A couple drops of Tri-Flow Lock lube at speedo rear magnet shaft tip bushing, not inside, should temporarily cure the problem. The front glass needs to be removed to reset the needle. I would just send the speedo in for a rebuild and calibration, about $120 in today's dollars.

Very courteous driver too, he stayed in the slow lane and didnt forget the wave for backing off and letting him merge. EVILSPAWN1003 I don't find the F40 beautiful in the same way I find the GT Lusso beautiful. The F40 is beautiful in the sense that it's such a raw, boxy simple race car design. F40 is like the Countach for me, not a "beautiful" design like a Miura or GT Lusso but beautiful because of how boxy and outlandish they are

Yeah I got a kick outta that statement too.. My 79 Chrysler has 3 ashtrays and 1 electric lighter. There are ''indentations' in the glove box lid for 2 cup holders, but the owner's manual says that they are not intended to be used while the car is in motion.. My 85 Dodge had 2 very nice cup holders in the center deck, but blocked the ashtray, and I remember my dad would have a fit over it. His 92 Dodge had 1 cup holder and he had to buy a separate dealer accessory ashtray that fit into the said holder, so it was 1 or the other... My 98 Dodge has a pull out cup holder for 2, but since I have a 5 speed, the cups interfere with the shifter. My 05 Acura has 2 cup holders and no ashtrays, same as my 09 Challenger. Both of those cup holders interfere w the sticks. Oh well, times do change I guess!

Late 90’s was the sweet spot. My Lexus LS has 4 drink holders that fit the large cups (if necessary) and a big ashtray up front and individuals in the rear. Only thing it lacked from a modern car was Bluetooth or an aux cord. A radio install or some simple soldering work (what I did so I could retain the stock upgrade Nakamichi system and its 1ohm 10” subwoofer) will fix that right up. Plus with a ~300hp/tq V8 QuadCam VVTI engine it’s perfect for a DD.

Another lovely video, which I enjoyed thoroughly, and which hit very close to home. My father loves to tell the story of a visit to a gas station/foreign car shop in Calgary which almost ended up in him owning a '66 330 GT. ***** I thought what sold cars was driving enjoyment and excitement. I've been to track and am planning to track my Porsche 911, but I mainly want to enjoy driving the car on and off the track. Why do people care how their lap time compares to other cars? Why wouldn't the people who can afford these cars want to have fun with a clutch and gearshift? Who cares how fast the thing can shift if it isn't enjoyable? I may want to buy one of these cars someday and they don't even make a car I shift myself, so what's the point? Does anyone actually use the flappy paddles for more than 5 minutes? You can only shift sequentially and the car usually shifts as well if not better than most people. Plus it's not rewarding or fun in any way to push a paddle, so what's the point? I'm glad I was able to buy my new 911 with a manual, but the dealership only had the heavy, expensive, boring automatic (PDK) so I had to custom order my car.

I'm with Jay on this one. Pre-1980s Ferraris can be great - some of them are among the most beautiful cars of all time for me. Current prices for those are pretty ridiculous, but at least they show that a lot of other people see it the same way. Their modern stuff - meh. They're fast and all that and their technology is incredible. Looks-wise however ... The same could be said for a lot of makes. I'd rather have a pre-1973 911 than a 993, 997 or even 991. I'd rather have a Miura than a Gallardo or Murcielago. It's just a matter of taste I guess. Plus: Any older car is bound to be more "raw" and will give you more feedback. Modern cars tend to leave you feeling more disconnected or insulated from the road. My MK VI Golf GTI feels like a cruise ship compared to a MK I or even MK II GTI.
@yerrie190810 жыл бұрын
so pre 1980 ? what about the F40? or now the Laferrari ? it makes his p1 eat dust
@1SaG9 жыл бұрын
Yerrie F40 is an incredible piece of kit - but it's not what I'd call beautiful. Not when you compare it to, say, the Daytona or the California Spyder. After all: It's an 80s car and, let's face it, a lot of those haven't aged well. Back when they were in production, I loved the Testarossa's or Porsche 959's looks, but when I look at them today? Not so much. But again: Just my opinion and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Ferrari is passion and technology at the highest levels and no matter what the troll-haters can say. It seems to be a common thought on Ferraris - the old ones just oozed glamour, passion, beauty (those Borranis...) and everything that you associate with Italian cars. And the sound...now they're just complicated, driven by footballers, too much F1-for-the-road stuff and tbh, not that pretty. Fast, yes. But they don't have the soul of these classic models.

@negativeindustrial6 жыл бұрын
rbagel55 Hyundai has never made a 2.5L V4 engine. V4 engines are some of the rarest engines by any manufacturers and most have never had one in their line up. The Santa Fe in-line 4cyl is a pretty generic type I4 with a displacement that ranged from 2.0-2.4L. Some were Turbocharged. They were also available with Hyundai’s knock off of Toyota’s V6. The Hyundai V6 was available with a displacement range of 2.7-3.5L depending on the year.

Sadly, Jay used a bad experience from the early 90's to forever dictate his view on Ferrari. In reality he is not very much in tune with how the company works. It is very interesting that he never mentions how poorly Porsche North America treats many of their long time clients. For the past ten years, they have by far been the worst when it comes to playing games. So yes, Jay is quite personal in is dislike about Ferrari. Isn't it also idiotic that he used to say that he would not buy a 458 because they were too complicated and too electrical yet he went straight out and got a 12C.

Yeah I don't get it either. He actually owns several McLarens, Porsches, and Lambos. He actually would be many millions richer if he had purchased some old Ferraris in the 80s and 90s (not that he cares, obviously).

Jay hit the nail on the head. Todays cars are more dependable, but I hate not being able to work on them. Been trying to find my 17 y.o. son something older, inexpensive, and in descent shape that I can work on. Hard to do with a low budget.

Jay, You know I was a trucker for 35 years. In the '66 Ferrari show that I just watched, Adam Corrolo said, ""what scares me is half the YOUNG GUYS coming up have no idea how to drive a stick." Jay, I used to drive TWIN STICK trucks (2 transmission). I also used to go to Boston and Maine with California Produce. That was "Sleeper Team ."

We'd love to see some segments with you working on a car! We know you do it because you know what you're talking about when discussing these cars! It kinda bothers me that because you're a big TV star we'll never get to meet. I'm sure under normal circumstances we would have been friends and hang out, work on cars, bikes or whatever. We're just cut out of the same cloth. Yes, I enjoy your comedy but it's the car guy I would like to meet! I have an old Porsche 914 that I'm restoring currently. I bet you don't have one of those! Mine is a 4 cylinder cause that's what I can afford but you should build a 914/6 with a hot late model air cooled 911 engine. It would be a great daily driver for you!

I'm guessing you've never heard of the infamous "Lucas, Prince of Darkness" experience with British cars? I think his point was that the analog gauges with an actual mechanical speedo cable can be fixed fairly easily. When an electronic gauge cluster goes out on a car like a Ferrari, fixing it may not be an option.

I can't stand the way he shifts his weight on his feet and sways side-to-side when he's standing... It's an incredibly annoying thing he does. His body movements also remind me of a 90 year old man who's got arthritis in every joint, and it causes him tremendous pain anytime he bends something, so he stands as rigidly as he can. Either that, or he's actually an anal retentive.

***** You're fucking brainless. Lamborghini uses Audi quattro system? (which is actually made by Haldex). Lamborghini cars are fitted with Borg-Warner systems for ultimate traction and possibility to sustain extreme speeds. FIAT OWNS FERRARI. Everything that Ferrari makes is a Fiat design. I love older Ferraris (90s models) and Alfa Romeos, but the newer ones are utter crap.

I could never afford to own one but this is the next best thing :) thanks Ish

I had a 1962 250 GTF for a while in the early 1970’s. It was used, of course, and didn’t cost much. The reason for the two distributors was that one 12 cylinder distributor with one coil couldn’t make and break the fields in the coil fast enough at high rpm. It takes a finite length of time for the field in the primary windings to collapse and induce a current in the secondary windings. Could be the modern super car owners you discuss don’t know about that sort of thing! There were dual coils and two two sets of points in each distributor. They had to be timed for each bank of cylinders. Although the electrical system was Magnetti Morelli I think Bosh made a special angle gauge to synchronize them. I never had one.

Adam Carolla was accurate with how if a Ferrari has 2+2 in the model name, it's cheaper than other models. Not to say it isn't expensive but compared to other models of the same era, they were more "affordable".
