Always learn something new from your shop. Been doing this kinda work for 40 years and never thought of taping up for the factory overspray look.

I loved the TV series that you had back in the 90’s, I was impressed with your ( LMC ) attention to detail back then, and even more now. It’s even more revealing to see the “overspray” areas and the fact that Wimbledon “White”…..really isn’t “White”. It’s quite stark when compared to the true white sealer. Master artwork in a retired car. I look forward to the rest of the series. 👍👌

The second set of eyes is a great thing to do. Folks need to understand that (as a former painter myself) painting a car is often an all day process. Between sealer, base coats and clear coats it takes hours and hours when you add in flash times, tack off wipe downs between base coats, de-nibbing, etc on top of the actual time it takes to spray. And some colours due their makeup don’t hide well either. Some colours can take up to 6 coats of base to get full coverage. In short what I’m trying to say is as a painter your eyes get tired when you’re focused so much on one thing and staring at it all day……doesn’t take much to miss something that doesn’t stand out to you until it’s too late.

Awesome video, it's cool to see how much work and time goes into a perfect paint job. Maybe dumb it down some more so guys like me, who have never done anything like this can see the ins and outs of the process, like what the different grits of sandpaper are, how the paint gets mixed, how the booth works, like that.

I saw one of your GT500 restorations at the Toronto auto show years ago. Britany Blue. was so straight and had such perfect gaps it felt like I was looking at a 3D rendering lol

I have been spraying Sherwin williams CC950 appearance clearcoat and I've been able to start at 1,500 through 3,000 and achieving smooth finishes kinda afraid to start with a lower grit

Yikes! I have never started cutting and buffing with 600. I generally start with 1200 and move up. I would think 600 would be far too aggressive and leave very little material left. Gorgeous car though and very impressive work.

I'm confused. Why is there a large hole in the trunk? Is the gas tank THE floor?

I am surprised you start color sanding with 600 grit. I use 1000 to start, then 1500, 2000, 3000, etc.

If you’re recreating overspray why not do the car in single stage?

@ no, he didn’t. If you’re so committed to originality that you are going to deliberately create overspray, why not go all the way and use the kind of paint which would’ve been on the car originally?
@davenorgrove3193

Why go through the effort to simulate overspray, red oxide, etc.. if you are going to make the fit and finish WAY better than factory? The end result is obviously not how the car was delivered. Not trying to be critical, just don't see the logic.

great content . . i sandblasted , prepped dumptrucks[ frames , boxes , cabs etc ] old cast iron equipment , grain hoppers, . you name it . then the hard part was prime and paint . mostly urathanes and heavy duty epoxys . one if not the hardest job ive ever had . i do admire the attention to detail . sometimes wish we would have taken clips of these jobs . . thank you guys for this .
