Back in the early 1980's - I had a Black '67, Red '68 and a '70 Green XR-7. The '67 and 70 were originals in mint condition, and the '68 was a ground-up 500 HP build. I had a store clerk laugh at me when I mentioned about the 1950's and 60's original car for the static display that was a clay model . Today the cars are designed in Auto CAD with a 3D printer to make parts or a 3D file for the CNC milling machine to make a part for casting. If someone took all the Maker's badges off their cars, you could line up 30 sedans or 15 cross-overs where I can only guess the Company that made it. I think that it's insane for Makers to build small 4 door cars when we have an Aging Population where people need large door to get in and more room inside . It's like the Radio stations catering to the youth music and Rap when that demographic was shrinking about 8% a year as people had less children while while immigrant entered with adult children over 19 .

The first time FORD ran their Ads on TV in 1966 , the car was amazing because it was the high-end model that had hidden headlights while the base engine was the 289 V8 . The Galaxie, GTO and Impala/Caprice didn't get hidden lights unitl 1968 . The Cougar's rear lights were from the T-bird concept for sequential and almost ran the entire width with the Plate space in the middle and gas filler flap . The first time I saw a Corvette was in the fall of 1964 when a new 1965 was park at a Company down the street from me. It was yellow with black inside and remember the wood steering wheel and black vinyl top and hide away head lights. The Cougar was what a person would see at a Futurama auto show , but the Mustang was so successful to pump out over 1 milion from april 64 to august 66 that Mercury wanted their version and built it at the F code plant in Detroit along side the Mustangs. While the Unibody was pretty well a base frame from the Mustang it was only the Trunk lid that was a Mustang part .

@solemandd675 жыл бұрын
@@larryhawkins3294 Hidden headlights are my favorite feature of classic cars. It's the reason I've owned several cars with them: '65 Riviera, '67 Eldorado '68 Cougar XR-7, '69 MK III from the late '80's through about 2002. I currently drive a '96 Collector's Edition Corvette Convertible. The most dependable system was the all electric one on the Riviera. The others had leaks. Currently there are all electric conversion kits for Cougars and I'd bet for the other models too, but when I owned those cars, either they weren't available or I missed that memo. I read an article that said the insurance cost of repairing/replacing those systems, coupled with owner complaints over units freezing in cold climates, caused car manufacturers to stop offering them. I lived in CA with all of my cars except the Eldo. I bought it when I returned to Dallas. Even if your home had a garage, it'd be frustrating to stand in freezing temps, at night, trying to free stuck covers, just so you can see, after a hard day at the office. I'm one of the few guys that would put up with that inconvenience.

It's almost the XR7 but I like that roof with no badges slapped on the side to collect water and dirt behind them . Not much that I would would change if I ordered one in 1966 other than no console but the headliner console option and maybe standard steerting .

Hi, Lou! Mercury may have called itself "The Man's Car" in 1967, but with Charlotte having owned this one for nearly all its life I think she will beg to differ! This was the first Cougar as you mentioned, and so it was with this car that Mercury became "The Sign of the Cat" (ROWRRR!). It was also around that time that the familiar red, black and blue signs with the Ford Oval began to appear at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships (and the two-tone blue signs for Ford). And just as the Ford Division had its horse-themed vehicles (Mustang, Bronco, Maverick, Pinto), Mercury would later have a couple more cats: the Bobcat and the Lynx. This car was like the perfect combination of style, sportiness and luxury, so no surprise that this was Car of the Year for '67. The Cougar went from ponycar to personal luxury car with the 1974 model year, and it even went four-door and, briefly, wagon for '77, when the line expanded to replace the Montego. Lou, you found us a real car gal with a real cool cat! Another fine presentation on "My Car Story"!

Hi Lou, some 67 Cougar facts: 1. Jaguar sued Ford because their Cougar cat resembled Jaguar's. That forced Mercury to add the name "COUGAR" under the cat emblem on the grille 2. 67 Cougar VIN #000001 the very first Cougar is alive and restored to councours condition, own by a collector in California. It sat in a quonset hut in New Brunswick Canada for decades before being purchased and restored here in the States. It's bright red with a white vinyl top Great video as always!!

Kinda funny I never paid any attention to these cars when I was a kid. My friend had gotten his hands on a 67 XR7 and I got a ride in it. It was nothing to look at but it had a decent interior. I was so impressed with the dash on this car with all the switch's and gauges across the dash with the wood grain, really nice the way it was done. Anyway looking at these cars now I think they are one of the most unique looking cars now with beautiful body lines. And lets not forget the best thing, the hide-a-way headlights and sequential tail lights. I'm a sucker for hide-a-way lights and the sequential's were the icing on the cake, always thought it was James Bond 007 like...love em! Then they ruined this car and made it a big sloppy luxury slob the newer Cougar's are just to big...67 was the year for this car and with a stick very sweet really nice car but needs to be an XR7.

I believe the quote was from Dr Seuss who said, "Don't be sad it's gone, but be glad it happened." That quote helps me with people or things I no longer have, and I hope it helps you too.

Wow Lou an original '67 GT - rare ride! Is that the original paint?? It is impeccable. The 390 never really seems to get its due...a real powerhouse - ask Steve McQueen! Merc's were always a step-up! This car was gorgeous then...and it's gorgeous now. The old-girl has done it proud!
