NEW DELHI: In the long history of India-China boundary dispute, a few incidents remain a landmark. The 1962 war is the biggest of them all; the 1967 clash at Nathu La in Sikkim is another. But another episode of a bloody encounter between Indian and Chinese soldiers that happened in Arunachal Pradesh in 1975 is not so well known. It is recorded in public domain as the last time before 2020 when shots were fired on the disputed border. Four soldiers of the para-military force Assam Rifles were killed. There is no information on how many Chinese--if at all--were killed in that clash. For the first time, we bring you the real story of what happened on 20 October 1975 at a remote mountain pass called Tulung La. Col Baliram Shah (rted), then Commanding the 3/1 Gorkha Rifles unit at Sela was given the job of retrieving the bodies of the four soldiers. He narrates the incident in detail to Nitin A. Gokhale, Editor-in-Chief of Stratnews Global.

Very grateful to Stratnews Global to have organized this talk with col. Shah. Probably for the first time the nation has known the ugly realities of 1975 incident, seen how Chinese behave and how our politicians over years have been hiding their incompetence from the public. Army was earlier never given free hand to counter chinese and because of that suffered both physically as well as by bringing their moral down.

Nothing has changed.... It's more marketing and of course yes material planning has improves because now the army asks for it rather than depending upon the babus and netas for approval... Modi knows that he has to give army what it asks because if we lose for the lack of a horse shoe then heads would roll...

Similar type of incident happened in May of 1999 in kargil war when Captain Saurabh Kalia an officer of the Indian Army and five soldiers of his patrol were captured and tortured prior to being killed by the shameless Pakistan Army.

"Cheen Hindustaan pe hamlaa karke, fauz ke uper badi meherbaani ki hai, ab yeh (politicians) log hame aur aazadi ki sastaa nahi samajhenge". These were the exact words of my dad's (who was JCO in IA 1967-73) friend and colleague (a Sardar). The lack of political will has cost us dearly through out our military history. This interview just confirms the wise words uttered by my dad's friend.

Respect for these great soldiers to the core that he cares so much for the type of ill treatment given to his boys in 75 by the Chinese. Though old ,still his anguish and rage for his fallen boys with so deep emotions melted me away. Proud of you Sir. Proud of the highest traditions of our armed forces. Jai Hind.

After hearing to Col. Shah, I was shoked. Aassam Rifles soldiers were brutedly tortured and killed. Blood was boiling.I could feel Col. Shah's sentiment. After hearing that there was no retaliation from our side, I felt pathetic about our leadership. Hope now with change in leadership we will be able to punish any misadventures from Chinese. This has been shown in Galwan. Thanks to Mr Nitin Gokhale for this eye opening episode.

What a brave soul he is. At the age of ,85 he is willing to fight for the country. There is no dearth of brave and patriotic souls in this country. Only the people at the top don't realise this. The govt should send the civil services also to the border, for minimum training. And oppoint one ex chief in to the defence ministry as a minister, so that he will have a say in decision making.

Col B.R. Shah (Retd.).....what a soldier....what a man🙏🙏🙏 His unstinting devotion to the Nation....his anguish even today, at recollecting the horrendous torture, meted out to fellow soldiers🙏🙏🙏 These are the men whom we know were part of our glorious past. Their valour and sacrifice sought to be relinquished at the altar of liberalism (the new term for opportunism) and secularism, by left leaning raconteurs. Thank you Nitin, for digging this gem of a veteran out for us🙏

It is gratifying to see that India produces soldiers of such high calibre that even at 85 years of age, Col Shah displays such passion and anger at the deception by China. He rightly advises that every Chinese action should be equalled by an Indian pushback to send a message across. Mutilation of Indian soldiers by Chinese army is despicable and points out to the barbarity of the medeival minded Hans. India should react with extreme prejudice to such terrible events by Chinese & Pakistani armies.

I am so angry after watching this interview. He should have been given a free hand and artillery support like he wanted. The ground commanders know what is required to win. Not the politicians sitting in AC offices. That is why India needs Military Rule. Not dumbocracy. Security First. Economy can be side by side or 2nd. Always.

Your revelations are, without recourse to flattery, so revealing and insightful. Please keep it going. I originally hail from Coorg the birthplace of Generals Cariappa and Thimmaiah who had to fight with their hands tied behind their backs thanks to Nehru and Krishna Menon. Elder Coorgs, though who are surviving and their heirs carry it in their memories. It is only now that the defense prowess is being solidified and hope the politicians there as usual mess it up.

Respects to the Colonel 🙏 Shows that our men go to any extent to not leave behind our fallen however adverse the situation maybe. Unlike the west chinese(pakistan) abandoning their own whom we give decent burial. However it is disappointing that our men were not given permission to carry arms & avenge their brothers. At this age our Col Shah has so much anguish to avenge, just imagine how he would have shredded the Chinese who took lives of our soldiers. But still, our armed forces over the years have made China count bodybags many times over. Jai Hind!
