The oldsmobile tornado was simply stunning. It was ahead of its time, and the reason why you didn't get torque steer is because the front drive axles or CV joints were equal lengths. And that mighty 425 motor, It was more powerful than you needed.

Never felt any torque steer driving our neighbor's 1968 Toronado back from Kennedy airport in 1969 to where we lived in New Jersey. That car was fast...nailed it as I entered the Garden State Parkway & the kickdown pushed me back against the seat. Took my foot of the gas pedal at 100 mph (fortunately). Only problem he ever had with it was keeping tires on the front wheels. The bias-ply tires would wear fast with the weight distribution of that car.

I remember when these were introduced. My parents had a chiropractic appointment and the chiropractor was next to the Oldsmobile dealership. So while I waited for my folks to complete their chiropractic appointment I went to the Oldsmobile dealer and looked at the Toronado. I was a kid at the time and I was car crazy about nearly everything on 4 wheels.

The 66 and 67 Toronados were the most beautiful, looked like they had been carved out of a bar of soap. Also, during those years, Toronado drivers were frequently required to put tire chains on their rear wheels by various highway patrols in the US and Canada when heavy snowfalls had occurred. It to a short while for the authorities to get the universal "rear tire rule" modified.

Hello from England. Two things I particularly like about your channel: i) your sheer ebullience & enthusiasm ii) your inclusion of period ads. Growing up in the '60s & '70s, I was dazzled by the car ads I saw in National Geographic magazine (my uncle used to pass me his copies when he'd read them). I don't think enough kudos has been given to those copywriters who created such intoxicating descriptions of motor cars - they were so unlike anything we had on this side of the pond. Great work sir!

@What it’s like I suspect that now you've built up your credibility and visibility as a KZbin content creator, it should become easier for you to get access to vehicles. Making contacts like the team behind the Muscle Car And Corvette Nationals show in Illinois every November will enable you to meet both the "average" car owner through to the "guys and gals" with multi million dollar cars and collections. Other folks there like sponsors Reliable Carriers and Mecum Auctions, together with the top restoration shops and other media, will provide opportunities for you. Top people from the automakers are also there. You also benefit from your car dealer friends/contacts - they'll know top collectors and may provide introductions for you to visit and shoot some collections and vehicles you'd otherwise have no access to, especially when starting out. I wish you much continued success with building your channel and hope your "Packard dream" comes true one day. Happy New Year from Christchurch New Zealand.

I love the dash of this car too! This was just different compared to most cars out there. They had the pitfall of using of front tires quickly so if your stock portfolio included Good Year and Firestone the Olds and Cadillac execs were happy. Fun facts - In the late 60's there was a drag racing Tornado that was 4 wheel drive (had slicks on all wheels) that ran 10's in the quarter mile! Jay Leno has a 66 that he made into a resto mod with a 1000 horsepower motor.

This is a extremly nice example, that said I prefer the 66 model in that Red/Maroon color. An aintresting point the UPP, Unified Power Rackage was used in GMC motorhomes, basically a well tested bullet proof powertrain. The tire were a special design by Firestone, called called the TFD Toronado-Front-Drive 8.85" x 15". That said, the front tires carried the load, power, steering. They wore fast unless they were rotated a lot. After all 60% of the weight was on those front wheels. Also the original front suspension used .torsion bars and the rear a single leaf spring using 2 shocks per side one horizontal acting as a radius rod one on each side vertical. The 66 had drum brakes, the 67 disc on front. The dash? Awesome. I did service work on sevearl of these when I started out as a mechanic.

Being born in the '50s by the time I was a freshman in high school that would have been 1966. That was one of the greatest eras for car designers and as teenagers we went nuts every year when new models came out. I remember seeing 65 rivieras, boat tail rivieras, toronados, caddies, T-Birds, and suicide door Lincoln Continentals, all of the really cool models. We saw them all. Added benefit was the fact that there were still quite a few cars from the '50s on the roads as well, even as a few from the 30s and the occasional model A and model t. So it was a good time to be a kid who was car crazy.

The '66 was absolutely a work of art. In '67, Old started tarting them up with the vinyl top and things... Kinda wrecked a gorgeous design. The car starts gaining weight the second year of production.😒 There is no torque steer in these, or the early front drive Eldorado. The '70s were real beasts in the performance department, but weren't as pretty as the '66 cars. The cloth in those interiors was nylon... It wore pretty well. The Toro is one of my favorite cars. It was designed to pay tribute to the old Cord front drive cars of the 30s... The design of the '66 perfectly gets that point across.

Believe it or not, back in the Eighties, you almost couldn't GIVE one away... And they were still absolutely dirt cheap in the Nineties. Everyone was goofy for Chevelles, Camaros and Skylarks. But over the last few years, the prices on these have gotten astronomical. This one reminds me of one that a friend had back in the Nineties. Identical, but it was ordered without the vinyl top. Back in the early Eighties, I had a buddy in Houston who had a maroon '66 with tan interior... It was also about as clean as this blue one. I don't think that Lou might have paid $1,200 for it. Anyhow... They're as solid and reliable as an Eldorado. Probably a GREAT investment because they're rarer than the Eldos. It sure is a nice car!

I'm not sure, but I think that I did like them the first time I ever saw one, which was most likely in an old magazine ad at the time, but I think that I remember liking the look, but I do know that they've always looked very intriguing to me! Once again though, this detailed, up close and personal look, at this pristine model, does give a whole new perspective, and I can say that I do think it is a gorgeous automobile! The interior is really amazing, and I agree, the gauges and instrument panel is a work of art! 🤩 The instrument panel usually doesn't strike up as much interest in me as the interior itself does, but this definitely is the exception! 😎

Hi Justin, Grate video! Thank you for explaining the GM "E" body platform. You are also very accurate in regards to the high end full-size personal luxury cars at that time, i.e. Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Toronado, Buick Rivera, Ford Thunderbird and the Chrysler 300. When you are driving or in riding the passenger seat of a Oldsmobile Toronado or a Cadillac Eldorado, keep in mind, that there is no transmission or driveshaft tunnel in your way and also there is no harmonic noise and vibration from the floor what so ever, it feels like you are sitting on your living room couch, even if you take your shoes off! They don't build them like that anymore! Please reply. Dave...

Ribbon speedo's, be they a moving vertical column, or a semi conical horizontal strip, or a coloured bar which turns red above a certain set speed, I just love them. I don't like digital readouts, because you have to read them, as apposed to looking at a single region. The El Dorado is also my favourite Cadillac body style from the 60s. They reprised the style theme in a Cadillac in the 80s, 90s? Not sure, but I love that as well. It is something about the flat and extended hip line, which presents as a shelf, which also has the sweep back, with the perfect contrast of curves throughout. Probably more to tell, but, well. Tell me I'm wrong, Jay. I know it's personal, but you know? For the size, it is a very heavy car at 2 metric tons approx. I had heard that they had two transaxle gearboxes, with one operating via a double heavy-duty chain and the other using more traditional pinion to the transmission drive. The first being less reliable due to stress on the chains. That is what I heard, anyway.

The 66 Olds had a variable speed torque converter. These are considered the best for performance but after one year GM decided it was additional expense and complexity and from 67 on the Olds and Eldorado got a one speed with their THD 425 trans. The motor homes used the same trans with a GVW of 13,000 pounds where they were less reliable. Bullet proof in the cars. I am told the internal components are the same as a THD 400 RWD.

There were two reasons that almost all new cars then made a heater and/or defroster optional. The first reason was that some buyers lived in desert communities where it rarely was cold. The second reason was to keep the base price lower which was a number that a prospect would often consider. Sales for the introductory 1966 Toronado were quite strong...but sales declined significantly from 1967 to 1970. There were a few reasons for the sales decline. The first reason was the limited appreciation for front-wheel drive (the rear-wheel drive Riviera of the same model years sold much better, as did the Ford Thunderbird). The second reason was the debatable styling of the 1968, 1969, and 1970 Toronado. Also, the 1967 to 1970 Eldorado was a competitor for a limited front-wheel drive market.

As a kid, the lawyer down the street was on retainer at the Olds dealership. He got a new Tornado every year so I am familiar with all the models. Frankly the Olds interior never compared with the Eldorado. Another friend had a boat tail Riviera. Likewise it did'nt compare well with the Cad.

@@What.its.like. I love the 67-70 Eldorado and consider it second to the V 16 Cad of the 30s as the best looking American car. I drove my moms all the time in high school and now have one I've painted to duplicate hers. I detest the later Eldorados and have driven some of those. The 67 has drum brakes and an old 429 Engine, as well as an old ladies interior. I also don't like the wheels and hide away headlights on the 67. The 70 has disk brakes and the new 500 as well as a better interior. I've seen one Toronado with a nice interior but have seen several which look poverty spec, very down market. My dad paid $6600 for the 70 Eldo new. Adam on Rare Cars collects all the old boats in new condition. He has about 50. He is looking for a 66 Toronado. Has 2 Eldos a 67 and a 69 I think. Also has all the Lincolns. The Lincolns have better build quality. At least back in the day an Olds was'nt a Cadillac. We traded a 98 in on the Eldorado.

The engineers at Volvo once claimed that approaching 200HP in a FWD vehicle was simply begging for a torque steering induced crash. I prefer RWD, but they are fewer on the road. There are plenty of 200 plus HP cars on the road, and I have not heard any complaints. Considering what the GM engineers achieved dynamically, perhaps the toe out of the tyres was their geometric solution to the torque steer, which resulted in heavy tyre wear? Perhaps the engineers have riddled the jankyness out of FWD? Come to think of it, I had a Nissan Maxima with the proper transmission and that was a very powerful car, without any torque vices at all. So maybe I just answered my own question. That was a great engine, I forget the model, but a well known powerhouse, which stood up well to twin turbo action. I had it naturally aspirated, and 3.5 DOHC 24 valve V6 engines are a hoot., it could easily break traction.

@jamesglenn6461

@@What.its.like. The T-shape layout takes up more space, and probably cost more (cuts into profits) than sideways layout. Torque steer is generally from unequal length axle shafts. But also slipping differentials in the transaxle unit. Because they're built cheaply. But not sold cheaply.

They were way to heavy to have torque steer. Because these Toronados and El Dorado's were so nose heavy, they lost most of the FWD advantages and would plow through turns. You'd better keep your foot in it when taking a curve fast or you would end up going where the front of the car was pointing. About the only FWD remaining was absolute traction. Put snow or off-road tires on the front wheels and you could plow through almost any severe roads conditions. The THM425 was designed on the TH400, but because the THM425 turned in the opposite direction, the internal gears were cut at and opposite angle. Although they will fit, some make the mistake of using THM400 gearing, but it won't last long. A heavy duty version of this THM425 was built, designated the THM475 and was used with the Olds 455 V8 in the GMC Motorhomes. Curiously, the THM425 and 475's used the same transmission filter that the ST400 and THM400 used through the 1967 model year, until they ended production. Many would consider the THM425 a transaxle as it was used in FWD applications(and experimental RWD applications), but it is NOT a transaxle. The differential housing was a separate unit bolted to the transmission. The drive axles snapped into the differential gears. On the wheel side was another story. The axle ends which were held into the drive hubs were tapered tri-pots(part of the outer C.V. joints) and retained by a single nut as most are today, but the tapered tri-pot ends were very difficult to remove and I'd seen many destroyed. These Toronados were always gas-hogs and in 1974 held first place at 4 mpg. The 1974 1/2 Ford Elite with the 400 V8 held 2nd place at 6 mpg. My parents had the Ford Elite and by defeating the timing vacuum emission controls and advancing the timing, the car then got atleast 12 mpg around town and I got as much as 26 mpg on the highway running 55-60 mph.

Torque steer happens in front wheel drive vehicles when they have unequal axel lengths..? Basically what happens is the steering wheel is always being fight you’re fighting to drive it straight essentially a lot of modern cars have it if they have over 200 hp and wants to pull to the left or the right not go straight down the road

If you, or anyone else, can let me know or explain the American proclivity for using the French word Coupe, pronounced coop-ay yet pronouncing it in the same way as the place where chickens rest during the night as in Coop? I lived there for a while and was always getting baffled how French words were misused. An entrée, for example, means entrance, and elsewhere it is used to refer to the beginning. I would sometimes order an entrée as I wasn't very hungry, and the largest portion I have ever seen would show up?? The world doesn't change according to this, it isn't important, just an idle curiosity is all. I am not having a go at anybody or country. I love Americans as individual people, as I met very few nasty ones. Cool?
