1967 SS 396 Camaro Barn Find Parked 43 Years

We flew to Minnesota to record the unearthing of a an original-paint, 1967 SS 396 Camaro (375-horsepower L78 - one of 1138 built)) that the owner stored in his pole barn in Wisconsin in 1975. He is finally going to sell.

Cars were pretty standard by 1971. Insurance co and has crisis killed the sport and by late 70s end was near..all auto makers detuned or just abandoned hi po cars called the malaise. Era of performance

Hey, remaining matching numbers 1967 L-78 Camaro"s are more rare than the 602 Z-28"s built that year. Many thanks to Jerry, Russ and Jane for sharing their story. Greatly appreciated. Hope to here that the L-78 is running again in the near future - nothing sounds and runs like a well tuned solid lifter big-block!!!!!! Those of you that posted negative comments are slime-balls. they wore out at 100,000 miles because of the lead in the gas. No maintenance to transmissions. Cars were rarely repainted, interiors were almost never reupholstered.

I own a '67 SS350 and have for 48 years! Mine has hide a way lights and deluxe interior/ red/red with white convertible top! Have rebuilt the 350 once and went through the Muncie, and changed the rear to a 4.11 posi! Car has been meticulously maintained! Had to replace the original radiator last year! I have never walked away from the Camaro! Wife and I dated, married went on our honeymoon together in'80! We also own a Buick GN, purchased new with 12 miles on odometer! Also own a '68 Mercury Cougar, bought new by wife's brother! It has 428 cobra jet with ram air! Even have original window stickers for GN and Cougar! Love the 1st year Camaros! Nothing else compares to me!

I live about 100 miles from these folks. I found in a garage 2 California VW Beetle Rust-Free cars stored in the same manner as this car. I bought 2 cars 3 motors and a rust-free floor pan for $600 dollars, stored for the last 20 years. I love folks like this because he had the sense to put it in the corner and just leave it for another generation to restore and enjoy. We are not owners of cars ,but we are merley care-takers .............

You don't know a whole lot about cars do you? There are young kids out there with Mechanic fathers that can help them update those old CLAP TRAP as you call them. That car put back in showroom condition is worth approx.$75.000 . There is a lot of garbage at car shows that looks good and is crap on the road. I have owned 6 very fast Mustangs and some chevs that are just as fast as the new ones if not faster.. If you are running a 100 mph in a new car or a 1966 chev you die just as fast in an accident.

These old rattle traps Suck in gas milage Needed a tune up Every 12,000 Miles Pretty much shot around 75,000 miles or for sure A vavle job and dripped Oil everywhere. New cars today will Go 100,000 Miles before First tuneup. I had a 02 Acura RSX first tuneup 210,000 miles I kept The plugs just for proof How good they looked. Also proof there was a show on about 10 years Ago Hillbillies and there American muscle against Yuppies and there wife's Grocery SUV's and stock Daily drivers. It was embarrassment Stock V6's against This so call big V8 muscel. They " Hillbillies" got there Asses handed to them Everytime, " They were pissed" EXCEPT One time a old timer Came out with a total Jack out like a 66 stang Nonthing about it was A 66 most likely everything on it was Made over seas? Pretty sad the good ole boy's had to cheat to Bring down the stock rides Of today & remember this was 10 years ago. Now some stock cars Today are or over 700 HP and V6's Have just as much Or more HP than some of That old iron. Also some 4 cylinders Are at 260HP today Or higher take the power to weight Ratio of today old iron need to stay in the garages and look pretty at the car shows I still love the old Iron!

I bought one very similar for $2,250 in 1978 with ~37K miles on it. It was built about a month before this one, also in Van Nuys, with original MR-code L78. Smog system & exhaust manifolds long gone, with a set of vintage Mickey Thompson Super Scavenger headers. Trans is a '68 M21 replacement, but rear end is original. Butternut Yellow with black bumblebee stripe and black vinyl top. Deluxe black interior with console/gauges. AM radio w/rear speaker, rear defogger, non-power front disc brakes with original rally wheels and disc brake caps. Found the UOIT printout in the car, matching the body number & cowl tag options. I still have it. Great fun to drive. Those Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers have a very unique sound. I hope that the car in the video (and all the parts, including the rare exhaust manifolds and smog system), end up in the hands of someone who'll do it justice. There are very few LOS(Van Nuys) '67 L-78 Camaros out there anymore, with the majority of them built in Norwood (with MQ code L78s). Thanks to Jerry for putting this video online.

When you take the block to the machine shop let them know that when they "deck it" they are not to machine over those matching numbers on the pad. If they erase those numbers, your car value plummets. You cant prove its a number matching car anymore. It just involves them stopping their machining process before it goes over the pad. Youll save the broaching on it also. Good luck, great vid!

These kinds of finds are very bitter sweet.. On one hand you have someone salvaging a piece of American Culture that should be preserved for future generations and on the other its always a guy with so much stuff in a shed or barn that hes just to old to work on tbem any more or sick or even passed on and this is his legacy that he usually has no one to leave it to or his family members have no interest in carrying on what a father or grandfather started back when these cars were on showroom floors, tracks and drag strips!! The story that these old barns could tell.. The late night builds, the fighrs the laughter the frustration... All of it was such a part of this country's culture and it seems as though its all just fading away.. We live in very different times.

Marc Aliventi Aliventi: Let's not forget, the Support for these vehicles in the aftermarket did not start to takeoff until the 90s....unless you had unlimited funds to purchase the few remaining NOS/OEM parts-components held by dealers,salvage yards,collectors...you were out of luck. Had the Internet been what it became now in the 1980s...many pony cars would still be around..and they would be more affordable to purchase. Unfortunately. Hoarders, and Speculators have driven-up the price of these "dime a dozen" as you stated. Just look at all the clones out there now....not excluding the ones with Brand-New body-shells made in Taiwan. My high-school friend in the 80s had a limited-run Mach 1 Mustang....it was not until the early 2000s that he was finally able to get it back on the road again. Back then, although much pricier as even a used car compared to a 60s/70s pony car...the Dealer and Aftermarket support for Datsun 510s was quite remarkable compared to muscle cars...yet those cars (the unmolested survivors,with decent bodies) cost anyone dearly; $2,000+ was the going price,not far from what they cost New 15 years earlier. Not to many kids could come up with $1,500-$2,000+ for a 510/Z....spending $500.00+ for a beat-up Mustang,Camaro, Firebird,Challenger/Charger,etc. was easier on the wallet....drive it till it blew-up,etc.

Marc Aliventi Aliventi: You can't get much individuality in styling of today's cars with 1 piece slab-sided stamping....Look even at the high-end vehicles or the : retro Challenger,Camaro,Mustang,etc....look very closely,very little compound character body lines/curves and design of the Original pony-muscle cars; beyond plastic bumpers and headlight/taillight buckets. That 1-piece stamping has to release from the press without defects ...unfortunately compound lines/curves can't be done (beyond door openings) with a large stamping....it's why all the old cars had to have multiple exterior and door opening stampings to achieve what the designers and the bean counters were willing to sign off on.

Please keep the original paint...it's survived so well!!! There are so few originals left if all it needs is two little patches on the quarters...and heck it don't really need em, just sort out the motor, interior, cut/polish and drive her, as is...that patina took 42 years to achieve...

I love this model Camaro and back during the 1st Arab caused fuel crises I had the opportunity to buy a convertible 396 SS .On my $35 fortnight apprentice wage, that wasn't going to happen though..This example has covered 76,000 miles, many of it at a 1/4 mile at a time so it has a minor race history and the trophy's to prove it . I'm glad he is a hoarder by nature because this is one old car that will be reborn with most of it's original parts intact. So many of these cars are long gone now as their race careers ended and they were parted out or simply neglected into oblivion.

I was a college kid in River Falls, Wisconsin during that time. River Falls is just a hop skip and a jump away from Eau Claire. My friends and I drove Fords and a couple of them were Mustang owners. The Camaro had come out a few years after the Mustang so we used to mess with the Chevy owners by referring to them as ‘cam-a-roos’. Good days, great memories!

Love that car, and yes there are a few of these around. I have a friend that bought a 68 chevelle ss and it is sitting in his garage. He passed away two years ago. But the chevelle came out with 396 375 in four speed, it came out a deep brown color and is in really great shape. It has been kept inside. I hope to buy it soon

When this car was put away it was just an ordinary old car. Not a collector yet. I bought my 68 Firebird in 1976 for $150.00, was ready for the junk heap. Nobody was collecting these cars until later.

I have a 1967 SS 396 Camaro 375 horsepower car that I have restored. The original motor and 4 speed transmission are long gone. It was ordered stripped and raced. When I purchased the car the original 12 bolt posi was howling as I drove it home. It took me 4 years to restore the car and was painted in its original Marina Blue.

She'll want to see it when she finds out what it's worth. At the Pomona swap meet, I've seen rusted shells of first gen Camaros going for $20k. The paint for the most part is in really good condition. Those wheels he pulled out of the trunk where fresh looking. Amazing car, hope someone can do the bare minimum to get it on the road again, in it's original glory and drive it.

Yeah, back in 2005 a guy told me were a 1969 scj mach 1 was sitting buried in a garage while playing basketball. I didn't go look for it and a couple friends went and purchased the car. They call me up to go look at it and see what they had bought. I was sick when i saw the shaker hood, car had perfect deluxe interior and drag pack option. 18,000 miles. And they got it for $1850. Said they had move stuff for a hour to get too it. Still kicking myself for that one.

Great find!!! I just go nuts when I see these findings. Thought I could never have this kind of luck. But I just got some the old guy next door died and I got to clean out the garage found 67 427 21000mi. vette and 69 Chevy P-u 4994mi. Both run.knew him since 81 and told me they were there. Now I have the bug I'm following leads now on more cars

this guy did the right thing. Selling it so it can get a second chance. So people let the car rot to the ground before selling.
