I've been a mechanic my whole life, my old man didn't give me much of a choice 😂. This is what keeps me going. It's a never ending battle and it's worth it EVERY road bump. Don't ever give up Will, that truck will only treat you as good as you treat it. EDIT: If your engines flooded, gas pedal to the floor it'll start everytime

I’ve always loved international growing up, now that I’m older and have worked of plenty of cars I don’t think I’d buy an international. Parts are just to hard to come by and I’d rather be wrenching or driving versus searching for parts or solutions to make things work. I hope you don’t run into many issues sourcing anything. Will, I live less than 5 miles from the original international harvester plant in ft wayne , indiana. They left here in 1982 for Springfield, Ohio BUT craigslist and the local want ads are full of oem International parts, maybe keep an eye on this area to get some of the things you need. Additionally, every year in August is the IH homecoming here in town and they have a good sized swap meet for parts and such

One thing I've learned working through my project car: they make starter fluid. It works great but gums up your oil pretty quick. You can also get a syringe of gasoline and just squirt it into the carb.

in one of my many jobs in the past i had to rebuild a DC-3 and clean out the 50 gallon oil tanks behind each engine. I built a cradle with a clutch assembly and put it on a stand to spin the oil tank and then we filled the tank with VARSOL. We spun the tank for 3 days continually. We emptied the tank and put in new VARSOL and spun the tank with a little sand in it too and it buffed the inside of the tank to a brilliant shine. Cleaned the tank awesome. We did this for each Oil Tank and then we coated the inside with an anti corrosion compound and it was ready to go. Love this series. Keep it up Will. Jim in Chile South America.

Hey Will, you might consider putting a new gas tank inside the frame rails, if you can find a place for it. GM did this in their 1970-1980's trucks and it killed over 2,000 people from fire crashes after they were hit in the side and the tank ruptured. This was considered the "the worst auto crash fire defect in the history of the U.S. Department of Transportation". Keep up the good work, always fun to learn some new skills!!!!

Super cool old truck, glad you got it going. One tip though, rather than carb cleaner or something like that use premix gas. The oil in premix helps keep things lubed up until the oil pressure is built.

Super cool! Cars and trucks are just nuts and bolts and 12 volt power. Rebuilding a truck isn't a lot different than rebuilding your power hammer. Just different nuts and bolts.

A good friend of mine once had a '67 International pickup. (Not a dually though.) That was an amazing truck. Ugly as sin, but built like a tank! There was room in the engine bay for 3 guys to work on the top end at once! One sitting on each inner fender, and one on the radiator. We never really needed to do it, but it would have been amusing. He got out of a speeding ticket by displaying a photo of the truck to the judge, and saying, "There's no way my truck could get to 78 mph downhill with a tailwind." Ticket dismissed!

You did fine with it Will. You'll learn as you go but you've got the one of the simplest vehicles to fix which is a good thing. Simple to fix, somple to keep running. Let it run for a while to get up to temp and then while its running trickle some Automatic transmission fluid down the carb. She smoke like a SOB but dont put so much thatbyou stall it. Then let it sit for a day. Warm it back up and then check your compression again. You might find it has gained compression. If not then a freshen up internally is a good idea. It will be reliable with no worries. Replace the belts, hoses, fuel pump, get the rad cleaned and flush the heater core. Doing these things will take most of your worries away. Shes a cool old girl and would look great with some aluminum wheels.

I love cars and you’re one of my all time favorite KZbinrs. A match made in heaven. I‘m excited to see where you take this build. Personally Id do a mild resto-mod with some performance upgrades so you can use it to haul machines instead of the Tacoma but for that you’d probably have to swap to diesel. What is the plan for the bed, full steel or maybe composite decking like Tyler bell did on his gmc?

Will, find yourself a "Motor's Manual" for the International Truck, Ebay, Amazon, Google, Facebook Marketplace, just a few of the places that come to mind. The manual contains a significant amount of information for repairing and maintaining the truck, it's a "must have" for a project of this nature. If you want to know what makes it tick!

I've worked on those internationals a few times haha they're good and simple trucks. If you want power, I would consider swapping to a different engine. Otheriwse, sick project!

Before you run the truck anymore, pour some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders. I guarantee you have 1 or 2 crushed piston rings. Marvel will help ALOT in getting your compression back up, especially on those cylinders around 80ish. Also, I would suggest coating the fuel tank or replacing it with a fiberglass one. Those old Internationals are notorious for getting sediment, and lots of rock dings & holes from where it's placed and that will help a bunch. You can also fabricate a skid plate to protect it if you don't want to replace it. At least yours is under the truck, my old truck had the tank behind the seat lol.

At that mileage, I wouldn't go into the motor unless there are signs of a failing headgasket - it's going to smoke and do seemingly sketchy stuff as you go through getting it fully resurrected. Now that you've woken it up, it will run better and better as the rings, etc. get settled again, etc. At that age, I'd definitely replace any and all rubber, eyeball all the hard lines (fuel) for corrosion, etc. I don't know anything about what hydraulics exist, but if they're there, they're suspect. You're already going to replace the full fuel system, which is a great start, and you've got plenty to do in the meantime. Leave the motor for evaluation at the end of all that stuff - if it is getting proper air, fuel and spark and not running well, then think about what needs to be opened up in the motor. Very cool truck! (and FWIW, we're setting up a SqaureSpace account for my wife soon, so thanks for the code :) )

Harbor Freight sells a "remote starter switch" that's really just a button with wires. You can use it start the engine from under the hood. Best $13 I've ever spent.

I always enjoy watching you explain the workings of various power hammers and shop machines and share your pretty vast experience with them. It is also a lot of fun seeing you dig into something that is new to you in this project. Old trucks are surprisingly resilient, and this one looks like it is in good hands. I'd recheck compression after it has run a bit and freed everything up, as well as that new starter spinning things with some vigor. I bet it'll look a lot better now.

Glad you got to experience the thrill of taking something that has been dead for decades and bringing it back to life. That said, you really should consider a total rebuild on the engine with compression numbers that bad. It is amazing how much you learn about an engine by reducing it to it's individual parts and rebuilding it. Good luck!

Great work! Throw some solvent (or good gas) and some nuts and bolts into the old tank and shake it up to clean it out. Then coat the inside with por15. No need to fab a new one.

Best advice I can give as a DIY car guy, before you get the engine and transmission fully ready to drive, check the brakes and suspension for anything that isn't working properly. Work on the woah before the go. You know, the whole "safety first" and all. Other than that, have a friend that'll stop you from making expensive and dangerous mistakes and you'll do great.

Will, get in touch with Jared Pink- he has some good friends that "do" IH vehicles; a lot of the parts you need are nearly unobtanium. Jared is the mastermind and chief hands on deck for "Questionable Garage" on YT. You may need to do a motor swap for something later just to get into a parts available situation. IH has been out of the "pick up truck biz for nearly a half century now.

You should probably still do a rebuild on the engine. It likely won't need any machining other than on the head, but the seals are all toast by now. I had a '73 Gremlin that had sat and that is what was the problem was with it's motor. It sat in eastern Washington and had lived there from when it drove off the lot until I got it, so how it had gone will be similar to what this truck will have and you will find a lot of vehicles that sit in the northwestern US not in the mountains or coast age outdoors like this. Yours was indoors, so it should be in better condition for a lot of things, but the lubricants and rubbers all die from time no matter where you store them. It is just a matter of time. You will find that anything made of leather or rubber is just dead. It will also need cleaning as all of the oils and greases will have separated or had the lighter parts evaporate off over the years. This also goes for the suspension parts and the breaks, but those are pretty easy to deal with. The axels and differentials are probably fine, but repacking the bearings with fresh grease would be a good idea while you have them apart if there is any seal damage. The diff. probably only needs the oil changed out. Replace the U-joints as well since the grease is probably gone and moisture will have gotten in there and cause corrosion. The good news is that the transmission is probably alright, but dropping the pan on it to see what condition it is in is the only way to be sure.

I'm not a veteran at this, but it seems to me like with any barn find you'd need to just accept that you're going to be rebuilding the motor etc. regardless. Just drop it and clean it all up with fresh everything if you actually want this thing to work well.
