The 304 is a great motor - it's what my youngest International has. I'm so glad you have the manual! Binder Boneyard in central Oregon specializes in Internationals from the 60's. You may want to check him out for the door handle, among other parts. And, YES, this truck was totally worth buying! But it is akin to vises: you'll want/need more than one.

Will, before you try to start your engine, pull out the spark plugs and squirt a little engine oil (only about a teaspoon or less) into each cylinder. If that engine has sat as long as I think it has, the cylinders and rings will be dry. You need to clean out the old gas from the carburetor and fuel tank, and the ignition will need to be checked. I'm sure you have friends that can help you with this. One guy you should contact is Ben at 406 Garage (KZbin). He collects old International trucks of all sizes, and I'm sure he'd be excited to answer any questions you have and help you source parts. He lives down in central Oregon, so not too far. Good Luck!

Hey Will! IH guy from northern Colorado, that's a GREAT truck. The one tons are a little rare compared to 1/2 and 3/4s, that will make an excellent shop truck for you. It looks to be very original, well kept, and unmolested. Even the original radiator hose clamps are there, they're unique and have gotten hard to find. Most replace them with common clamps but I prefer the original. The IH engines are very robust for the application and should serve you well. The rarely take much to get going. If it's been sitting for a while a bit of oil down the spark plug holes is a good idea; as is "pre-oiling" where you take the distributor out and run the oil pump with a drill to circulate oil pressure before trying to run it. It's a little involved but a good learning experience if you want to tackle that. Find a manifold rather than going headers. Headers will gain nothing and leak/rust in short order. Virtually any manifold from an IH 266, 304, 345, or 392 will work. The windshield should be available from any standard glass installers. Junkyards are a good source for small parts, most yards with some older stuff will have some IHs around. Look at the bigger Loadstar trucks, they were plentiful and share a lot of parts. Engines and cabs (door handles) specifically. The '68s have some one year only parts like the headlight trim rings and the front fender marker light lenses/bezels; they are very hard items to find, yours look great! Even more rare are the front fender reflectors. Those are unique to later production 1968 1300s only, very very very hard to find those, take care of them. Looks like that truck with clean up very nice, a quick polish with go a long ways on it. I wouldn't sweat the scrapes and dings, its way nicer than most are and presents well as is. The grill guard is a fantastic piece, original as you suspect and not very common. Super Scout Specialists and IH Parts America are good bets for new and used parts. Scoutco is an IH specific decal Binder Books will have things like service manuals if you're interested. EBay is always a good resource. Stay away from Scoutparts and Travelallparts, they're not very reputable retailers. Service type parts (headlights are industry standard parts and available anywhere) are pretty readily available from auto parts stores and Rock Auto. Good luck! Let me know if you have questions and I might be able to help with some parts if you need.

My dad had a '53 IH one ton truck. That is what I learned to drive with when I was 5 years old. It had a 10' grain bed on it and hauled 120 bushel of wheat or beans. If it got loaded to 130 bushel, that was clearly overloaded.

Focus on the mechanical... engine, brakes and such. I wouldn't worry about the body too much. Buyers like 'em farm-fresh right now. Just tighten your lights and stuff up and leave the bumps and scratches with the original paint. It'll look good with a flat bed on it. Rock Auto has some listings for a '68 International. I just dropped $5K on my '86 K-10 and I got a lot of stuff from them.

Those rims are split rims, NOT, the widow maker rims. Those ones are split in the depression, the beads set in, to install. Look carefully online, you will see. The engines can be rebuilt, and are generally made to last a loong time. Just change oil and filters often. Much cheaper than engines. Best wishes from the far North.

He needs to fix that damn thing :) KZbin has pretty much killed the only reason not in the last 15 years - not knowing that there are at least 4 reliable, permanent methods of fixing castings. it looked bad, alright, but everything except the major frame break is peanuts really, if you have a big torch and such. The broken frame sucks, a lot. But i suspect that can be bolted back together on the break like a fractured conrod. make some sort of steel corset, set a few bolts. Its only the rear bearing and there is really no shock load on it. Or you braze it. Carefully. Slowly. With an alignment rig. None of it is that scary. Just a bigger part so more fun. I bet the viewer numbers would be amazing. If it warps too much, well, someone surely got an HBM....

Before replacing the windshield... they have a UV curing resin that MIGHT work on the crack. I have not tried it myself but am contemplating doing so on my cracked windshield. It is supposed to fix chips, stars, bullseyes, and cracks in the outside layer of glass. It may be worth looking into, I mean, the glass is already cracked, right? It fills the crack through capillary action of the very low viscosity resin. When it cures it is not supposed to be visible. Worth investigating over the cost of a replacement windshield.

You should do a collab to get this done, I know from experience what you're getting into and its a massive rabbit hole. All the leaf springs will need to be replaced (probably cracked / will crack) bushings, front end, new / refreshed motor, brakes wheel bearings, electronics, wiring, Fuel tank, fuel lines, possibly regear the rear end (speed limits weren't always 60) transmission / clutch, and then building a flat deck is either a rabbit hole or just a time consuming endeavor. With 4 people its 10x faster & You'll definitely want a lift. Happy to see you restore a classic but its a massive project.. lol

If this is the first restoration you've done, DO NOT TAKE IT ALL APART FIRST! Instead restore one system as a time. Brakes as a system, engine as a system, body as a system. Disassembly is the easy part, by restoring one system at a time, you don't set your self up to be overwhelmed by assembling an entire truck. Take pics, bag every nut and bolt, and label it.
