It never ceases to amaze me how many, even alleged long-time Series owners, do not know what the yellow and red lever will do and hence cannot use them correctly. Here is a prime case-in-point. Moreover there is no diff-lock on the Series LR, and even if there was, there is absolutely no reason why it should not be engageable in low-range. Learn your stuff mate before doing a video.

Thank you for your comments, I appreciate that you took the time to watch the video and respond via comments. In response; I may be confusing the situation by referring to the front wheel drive select plunger as a diff lock it is because I am primarily working with Range Rover Classic systems which allow for the central differential to be locked - thus forcing output to both forwards and rearwards axles and at the same speed, and a feature that the Land Rover series transfer box replicates although by a different term. However you are incorrect in that "front axle drive" can be selected when in Low range, to be honest I have yet to find myself in a situation where it is needed, mainly because high range 1st gear with "front axle drive" selected will get these amazing machines out of even the deepest crap. Stick the transfer box into Low range and no amount of pressing will allow you to engage the front axle drive. Does front axle automatically engage when in Low range? that would make more sense
@78a67h2 ай бұрын
@@churchhouseclassics The yellow lever pressed down towards the floor engages 4WD while still in high range. The red lever pulled backwards 2 notches engages low range AND 4WD automatically. This is designed into the workings of the transfer box, because when in low range it is MANDATORY to be in 4WD and there is a serious reason for this, but more on this point later. There is no central diff on the Series LR and when in 4WD front and rear prop shafts are locked together.

Looking at picking up a series 1 or 2a project here in Canada this week and this is putting up a pretty good argument. These visceral analogue experiences are priceless these days.

A very fair and accurate assessment of a Series Land Rover. I have had an 88" Safari for over 35 years and it is just an excellent vehicle. Rattles, shakes, leaks, vague steering are all part of the charm and really doesn't matter as you amble along the trails and through the fields. 60mph is a bit of a death wish if absolutely anyone pulls out in front of you, which they all will do. Love the hand brake lock too! Thank you for an excellent video. Cheers, from Canada.

Must be fun when one of those weird single seat 2 stroke car type things is trying to get past you but just doesnt have the balls. The driver of that contraption will be filled with envy at the creature comforts in your series 2 😂🍻😎

Brave man, I’ve done some motorway miles in minebut only after fitting a roamerdrive. 53 to 55 in lane one, staying with the lorries. Nice to get back onto the a and B roads.

I had a 63 Series 11a, which was fantastic. Utterly brilliant, except for the brakes, where you had to book an appointment to complete an emergency stop.

Ah the old school book of self preservation 🙈😋. All cars used to be like this and now we have driver aids such that it is "crooze control on! brian off"

I’ve a 1964 Series 2a pick up 109 and have two additional tops. Have the wagon top, sides & rear hatch and tail gate. Also have the hoops and full canvas top. It’s the only vehicle I know that has 4 gear levers. The quirkiest vehicle I’ve ever owned. Great fun! Cheers🍺🏁

Hi Richard just to let you know on a couple points, the yellow lever is not diff lock but in face the 4WD lever (series land rovers apart from the stage 1 v8 never had a center diff) and bug screens are definitely period with them being optional equipment from approx 1954 with the series 1.
@churchhouseclassics3 жыл бұрын
Does the yellow lever engage the front axle. thus one wheel on each axle is driven?
@mikemike6903 жыл бұрын
@@churchhouseclassics the yellow lever engages drive to the front propshaft and in turn to the from diff. yep only 1 wheel per axle is driven if you were to remove traction from all 4 wheels

A old Gamekeepers truck , nearly all of them ran SWB . By the way back in the day the best heater conversion was to fit a used heater assembly out of a mks 1 airflow Cortina ,they really were good , even keeping up with the near gale force drafts that came in from everywhere ! .

Liked, but under great protest. Avoid fast a-roads and motorways. Drive slower with the open road ahead and a series is great fun

Richard, you missed out the 12v output on the dash panel .... that's got to be 10% of the 'features' in a series. Keep you the vids - as someone else said, great to be back in Devon, and hope you get back on the case with Sandy before long.
@churchhouseclassics3 жыл бұрын
Damn and blast, I knew there had to be more. I even have one of those decrepit lead lights that takes a brake light bulb and plugs into that socket. Sandy is waiting patiently in the wings
@spesinfracta2 жыл бұрын
The Series 2A had the headlights in front of the radiator not in the wings, those are replacement mudguards from a Series 3 which did have them in the wings.

I urge you to check your sources again, February 1969 was a change over year for the series IIa due largely to overseas lighting requirements. This vehicle is a home market car first registered in June 1969, the outboard lights are correct. The rad panel however is from an earlier pre Feb 1969 car

Hi Richard , love your series Landrover videos , I’ve acquired 5 series Landrover’s over the past decade, all needing work ! So watching your vids help me get the motivation I’m lacking & knowledge in repairing these things 😃 love your sense of humour! I live just outside barnstaple, village called Landkey & was recently at the Poltimore Arms on Exmoor , where you’ve enjoyed a couple of swift ones so I understand 😃 I know you’re working in High Wycombe at your dads house but where’s your home town ? Anyway keep up the great work , kind regards Keith Best

Hi Keith, Home is High Wycombe 👍 I must congratulate you on your exquisite taste in vehicles to hoard. I am about to start a load of work on an s3 88 and the videos will start popping up. Covidz pending I am often down in Devon at my Dad's which is less than 10 miles from you. Yardedown is awesome 🍻

I remember with the Land Rover I had the steering was at best vague and the brakes were more heart stopping than car stopping, but I do miss my old girl she is still working somewhere in England (SORN Title) but as an 'off road' vehicle it used to be cream when I owned it, but someone has painted it green.
@churchhouseclassics3 жыл бұрын
most noobs into series land rovers assume the steering is more "disconnected" than "vague" 😂

it may be the wings that are wrong (with the headlights) since both the bulkhead and radiator panel are early 2A. And it is right on the cusp since in late 1969, headlights moved into the wings.
