HAPPY 50th COROLLA ANNIVERSARY!
USDM KE11 Kouki 2dr Sedan in middle Europe, Hungary.
First body of the legendary world leader, best ever selling car type.
(3)2K gasoline engine, with 2 speed! Toyoglide automatic transmission.
After the car arrived at home, the engine and the transmission got new oil, and i tried to turn around the crankshaft.
When it succeded i have decided to start the engine with an improvised fuel system. The engine needed new spark plugs and the ignition switch some repair... Sometimes it sends 12V to the ignition coil only when the ignition switch is in "ON" position. This is why that the engine won't starts at "START" position, only if i finally leave the key back to "ON".
Unfortunatelly the Toyoglide has a problem in "Drive". The car don't want to go forward, only wirks in "Reverse".
In "D" if the RPM falls down, the car tries to jump ahaed a little bit --- as you see -, but nothing relevant movement.
Any correct idea about the problem?
Otherwise the car looks so tarnished in that status. I'm thinking on that leave the restoration away, and keep this peace of history in that preserved condition at a saloon of a Toyota dealership.
2nd video. This "beauty" in motion: • 1st generation Corolla...

Great to see the old Corolla running again! Nothing better that a old Toyota, I drive a 1987 Camry Wagon, it is still like new, inside it's mint and it has just a touch of rust around the back fenders, 380 000km , drives like a new car. rarely needs repairs!

My second car was my grandmother's 1977 corolla. The engine had hemispherical combustion chambers with the spark plugs right in the center of the valve covers (2tc). Also it had a 3 speed toyoglide transmission. That little cat was indestructible and quick too!

I know every nut and bolt on that car. You gotta pump it and don't choke it til you get it started. Slowly adjust the choke til it's happy. More than likely you could strip it down, replace all the gaskets and find that the rings and bores are still fine, clean the valves and get another 250,000 miles out of it. I've been driving a 68 KE10 for 30 years.

First car i ever owned was a Ke20 1976 facelift. 3k , 4 speed manual. They upgraded to McPherson struts and done away with the mono front leaf spring. Even had the full repair manual which told you how to repair every thing in high detail."Not that you even needed to fix anything as they were bullet proof. Later on i fitted a 5K 1500cc Engine , which had electronic ignition & hydraulic lifters which these engines badly needed as they rattled in the tappets quite badly, Also managed to get a Japanese factory 5 speed gearbox. the only let down was you could only get 13" wheels the biggest available at the time and it was hard to find a good ratio rear diff that fitted, so they had a tendency to rev quite high on the motorway. great little cars .

My dad had one of these. One morning on his way to work a collie ran out on front of him and the splash pan under the car buckled. The dog wasn't hurt at all. He told the owners what happened and they took him to the vet, so we know it was ok. It would be a great lightweight car to put a rotary in.

body doesn't even look that bad, it looks rough but doesn't seem to be rotted out. I grew up on the back seat of a '73 and after that a '79 carina, both cars had rotted out fenders after just 6 years, I remember the rusty holes in them. Engines were indestructible though.

Had a '69 in around 1981 Vancouver Canada. Was my first car and a hand-me-down from my mother. 1100cc with 2 speed Toyoglide. World's slowest drifter. The little bugger would go sideways for 2 blocks if the pavement was even a little wet which is a lot of the time in this part of the world. We have some very steep hills here and I recall one day with two passengers on board trying to climb one of those hills (Coquitlam BC). The little car that could just powered right out that day and stopped halfway up. I recalled a tale told by Model T owners that said they went better up hill backward. So a quick u-turn and into reverse we went and actually got up the hill faster going backward! Ironically mine started out as a dark blue (bit of green in it I think) and we repainted it when it was still Mom's. We painted it the same colour as this one in the video. Those engine sounds bring very familiar memories back.

My mother and grandmother had Corollas from the first and second year they were imported into the US (66 and 67?). They looked identical except that my mother's had the key on the dashboard, all the way to the left, and my grandmother had the key on the column, also on the left. I didn't know these were even available in an automatic. Still remember how odd the horizontal slide lever for the choke was and that you pulled a knob out to turn on the wipers and twisted it for the washers. The rear vent windows would close if you hit a bump and the car had no A/C or radio.

You probably have figured this out by now, but did you check that your choke functions properly? The choke plate should be almost shut when cold, and completely open when the engine is warm. If the choke plate is open when the car is cold, the car will be hard to start and keep running. This is because engines need a rich mixture to start. The choke plate restricts air flow, hens it's name. The mixture fuel to air mixture will be rich in gas and lean of air.

I had a 67 and a 68. Great little car, BUT, for the brakes... 4 manual drums :( and....those had 2 wheel cylinders per wheel and... they are manual NOT auto adjusting ! Meaning.. do the brake job and drive it for a month or so (off and on), tinkering/adjusting, before you get it to actually stop "relatively" straight! Dont care.. what the manual says, its a rough guide only, to get you "sort of" in the ballpark only, lol. I was doing heavy duty diesel mech apprentice at the time and all the guys there, all got a good laugh, at how NOT to design a brake system! Otherwise... runs like a sewing machine and shifts like butter :) Hardly used fuel.. Oh also, not sure how your results are, but... When i went to get a master cylinder, AFTER the dealer and every parts guy in town quit laughing.. you want a WHAT?! Ya ya... The end result was... NONE in north america to be bought and the dealer actually contacted japan and they dug through and actually found the orig dies and recast a "lot" of them. I do not recall exactly the size of the die cast(36 or 48 maybe), but the master cylinder was... ummm i want to say i paid 480-520? It hurt but.. It was the right thing to do sadly.. I also had acces to an old closed out toyota dealerships oem parts that ended up in 2 shipping containers and we went through and NOTHING was right for bore and stoke size.. one truck master cylinder, was sort of close and i did mod it to work, but.. it was kind of a skatey feel so.. Being as we cant run an adjustable proportioning valve on the street here... I ended having to pop for the $500ish recast master cylinder! Ouch but.. what ya going to do :P I think i have seen 1 other car in real life(not inc net pics) in 25 yrs... Id say.. thats pretty rare :)

barry phillips I mean maybe but if there are no replacement parts cause they got crushed you have to put allot of money into it and if the engine is worn then don't bother fixing it cause if you factor with all that rust that needs to be cut out for new metal you might just give up on the project if you don't put a new engine in it plus if there's no one that's into these idk how your going to profit of them its Toyota not a dodge or plymouth. Or Oldsmobile.

ANY decent engine repair shop will have all the bits needed and MORE, you will be surprised how many parts are around for the old Corolla, even ask a few of the Toyota dealers. Some times the car factories will buy back an old car they made if it is rare and they do it up themselves. If you want a car too hoon about in the loads of suitable cars everywhere. The old Corolla could make you boys some money!
