Should YOU Buy that Cuckoo Clock you found?

Should you buy that Cuckoo Clock you found at the thrift store or garage sale? I try to explain what the value is in the clock and different Cuckoo clocks and a hint of the cost of parts. This is for the people that want to fix their own clock and not take it into a clocksmith that would shock you on the price to even look at your clock. Sorry, no technical names of the parts, just what a normal person that just wants their own clock to work again.

Now that I am retired, I just might show my life and some of the towns around me. I enjoy working on Cuckoo Clocks and clocks in general, How to repair vacuums, fans and things form the thrift stores, besides the thrift store finds, and working on houses. Time Lapse, Bird & Sky watching along with gardening. Helping my Dad with things he loved to do, along with taking dad and his wife to breakfast.
My Brother and Dad, live on the same Dead End Road and yea, maybe we just might get into trouble a little, but have fun doing it. It is time to start smelling the Roses on the way instead of looking at them and passing them by.

I could watch you all day. I learn so much. I just bought 10 broken cuckcoo and novelty clocks to learn on. Bought old used parts, a new ultrasonic cleaner. That is awesome! The more time you can get under your belt on working on these clocks, the better you will get at it and start to know what to look for when something is wrong with the clock or when putting the movement back together. Also remember that if you mess up on one, now you have the knowhow of what you did wrong and you can still fix it to make it right.

You are very welcome. The thing about E-Bay is you have to snipper bid because others get the fever of someone over bid them and then the end result will be you over paid for the clock.

Got my thrift store find all restored and working properly. Using the techniques on this channel. I took out the movement and soaked in ammonia overnight. Then I oiled all the pivot points with synthetic car oil. Using a toothpick. Then I set the gong striker as per the instructions on your other vid. The bellows were working but not fully dropping down so they gave a weak sound. I taped a penny to the top to add some more weight to each bellows. That worked. Next adventure is to fashion new bellows using a Tyvek mailing envelope, as per another vid. I'd like to eliminate those pennies. This is a nice clock, all white. Haven't seen a white one yet on ebay. It's a keeper.

This is great to here Mike. I have an all white one with the white weights and pendulum. The reason you had to put the penneys on the top of the Bellows is because it was taken down and the bellows were left open to long. In time you will be able to take the penneys off. I do want to say good luck on the Tyvek on the bellows. I just didn't have the patients for that part of the clock repair.

There have been a lot of cuckoo clocks with memories. Sad thing is that most have been given to the thrift stores or clock shops that said the clock was toast and the people believed them and left the clock behind. Just a few sad stories. I have 3 working clocks on my walls that all came from thrift stores. I was lucky as all they needed was cleaning and oiling. I recently made another thrift store purchase of two clocks in really bad shape, but for $8 I figured they would be a cheap experiment to try some more of your in depth techniques. I'll either learn a lot, or I've only lost $8. Worth a shot.

They are 8 days if you hang them over 9 feet so the weights will last 8 days before they touch the floor. The chains are 8 ft 5" to the bottom of the clock therefore the clock would have to be hung at least 9 feet and 8" for it to last 8 days. Or you can hang it at any height and wind it twice a week

I very seldom find anybody at garage sales or second hand stores selling cuckoo clocks but I love clocks that chime or make make noise hubby hates them so I keep them to a minimum but would love to have a room with just clocks and sewing/ crafts. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for a casual yet very informative cuckoo clock video. Yes, they are turning up at garage and yard sales. I just got a SCHNEIDER 8 day small clock with a REGULA movt. I'm familiar with hand tools. But I don't know my way around mechanical clocks. So I have a friend who is an outstanding Clock Maker. She replaced the broken wooden hands with metal ones, glued the front carved frame, and gave it her blessing. I can see why some folks are passionate about cuckoo clocks. We now have a "new family member" ticking away in our dining room. Please do an update video anytime.

@@justmike57 Yes you do! It's a basic sturdy Schneider 8 day with two weights on a REGULA brass movt. I had the hands replaced, decorative frame glued back on, and I installed a topper that matches the cross & leaf front frame. Hanging off a heavy duty screw deep into the wall, it's our new member of the family I hope for years to come. More power to you! I bought a cuckoo clock at a thrift store 2 days ago. $15. It's in excellent condition cosmetically, the bird and gong and bellows work correctly, all the parts are there and clean. But the pendulum swings for maybe 20 seconds before petering out. It's an August Schwer 1 day model , no music. I came to this channel to learn about these clocks, and to figure out how to fix it. I'm going to remove the movement using what I've learned on this channel. Maybe just cleaning and oil?

When you start the pendulum, do you listen for the Tick Tock sound to make sure the sound is even. On these clocks, people forget and take them down and push the pendulum up inside the clock and bend the rod, Sept. 15, I have a video coming out on this problem. Another thing you can do is move the minute hand. Is it stiff? If so, spin it around clockwise for about three of four times and see if it will run then. It might be a temporary fix or just needed to move the old oil around a bit. Hope this help you Mike G.

I am not sure what you are talking about. The only Coil is the gong when the bird cuckoo's. I've got 2 working cuckoo clocks. Both are musical movements but one that was given to me by a friend had been locked up in his closet for 20 years and the music box hasn't worked ever since. He gave it to me saying that if I could get it working then I could have it. He just wanted to see it working again. Which was understandable. It's a Schmeckenbecher brand with the beer drinkers that he got in Germany in 1985. Well when I got it I took it to my old friend who was a clock worker who worked endlessly on it. Ordered the music box and everything. Still wouldn't work the music. But the cuckoo still sounded and the rest of the movement still functioned properly. Even though the music box doesn't work anymore I still appreciate what does on it. At least the bird works and keeps time really good. I nicknamed it "The gift from two friends clock." Shortly after that the friend I had who worked on it passed away due to age. I see that clock and I see all his hard work on it. Took him 3 months but it was definitely worth the wait. Love the cuckoo clock you have thats pre WW2. Definitely a nice addition to any clock collection.

On the music box, if the gears are good, you should be able to oil the ends of the moving parts to free it up again. The only music box I know that will not work again is when a plastic gear cracks in half

Hi mike barb again I followed your instructions on the clock going off way before the hand hits the 12 your advice worked and I had no doubt. I am fixing a clock with a music box and I adjusted the music box it would not shut off. The problem is when the bird comes out the wheel the people sit on shakes to the cuckoo. And it only shakes when it hits the hour. Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mike . This clock is a hummal clock and I am fixing it for a friend

The Music box is what makes the people move like dancers. One of the levers will trip the music to get it ready to play, the other smaller wire is there to stop the fan, governor, Like a warning pin, and after the cuckoo stops making noise, the lever will pull out of the way and let the fan move now.

I found only a case for a German cuckoo clock, and it was only 1 dollar! It didn't come with any components though, just a wooden case

Well there are crafters out there that like to make crafting projects out of the clocks. Depends on how much money you want to put into the clock to make a cuckoo clock again. Just check out E-bay for prices on used cuckoo clock parts and don't forget to check the clock parts that are sold on line from their shops. At just $1.00 and depending on the clock box, you might even sell it on e-bay to get some money to maybe get a clock that has more parts in the clock. Also watch the auction site at Goodwill. There are some deals there if you don't get too excited and just blow your money. Patents is golden when buying a clock.

The battery Anniversary clocks are nice with the music in them. I have a few of both kinds, battery and wind-up. I had to give a reason of changing shirts because this was the next day Susan Lee, lol.

The music box looks so intricate $90 bucks I can see that. Haven’t been to thrift store in a while but I’ve never seen a cuckoo clock in there

I just wish I could take the music box out of the thrift store music boxes and use them, but they are not the same. I have found one in a thrift store and three at Goodwill store. I don't thrift store shop now because they require you to wear a mask. Thanks for stopping in Jacqueline Brown.

Yes, I have windchimes outside in the back. I only had one or two complain about the noise they make when I do a video. They are nice, but I forget they are there until I start to eddit Robin. You have a blessed week.

Mike I just got a giant chalet for $100, but one bellow has no holes and works on another bellow whistle but Is not working on the current one which is tightly glued, what do I do?

Hey Nathan Wayne, not exactly sure what you are talking about. If the whistle is glued to the case, like I have seen before, you have to just pray and pry it off carefully with a small screwdriver or putty knife to help cut the glue from the wood case. It all depends on the store. Some throw the clock in a box and sell it, then others will put the clock in a clear bag that you can't get into. Most the time I check to see what the clock does when I pull on the chain and move the minute hand to the hour. Also it is easy enough to get the chains back on to test the clock by turning the clock upside down and fiddle with the chain to get it back on the winding wheel.

Hey, I'm on the process of repairing a chalet cuckoo clock that I just got. I have noticed that the music plays on the half hour and hour, thing is it's not supposed to play on the half hour, so the weight drops further than the other two. How can I fix this? Thank you!

I don't have a picture of your works, but there should be a wire that will trigger the music to play, that wire should have about a 1/4 or so resting through the arm that triggers the music so it doesn't pull the arm on the 1/2 hour after cuckooing Horror Nerd13
