The restoration on that Oldsmobile is unbelievable. Just look at the gorgeous detail until the hood. I cannot imagine the amount of time and money that went into that car. I've always wanted a w-31 car. They seem like the best of both worlds. It also had a very special TH350 auto trans with higher valve body pressure, ~2800-2900 stall, and 6 clutch plates instead of the usual 5. One time on cruise night a yokel informed me they were extremely poorly engineered and shoddily built cars, although he DID tell me about his niece who drove one "all the way to Seattle... AND BACK!" Imagine that; it's over two thousand miles and it didn't blow up even once! OMG. Then he said my "little 4-banger" was quite puny and prone to overheat bc "they don't even have a radiator" He had a Camaro that was a pile of smoking crap and challenged me to a race. His 350 ci would have beaten me of course, but I didn't hear him challenge anyone with twice as many cubes and 2 more cylinders than his engine had.

I know some will find this odd but I have in front of me a March 1969 issue of "Car Life" magazine with a full road test of a 69 W-31 Cutlass which was clocked at 14.9 seconds @ 96 mph (best). It was an automatic with a 3.91 gear and they used 6200 rpm shift points. Elsewhere in my collection is a test of another W-31 by "High Performance Cars" magazine. It's a January 1970 issue. Here they tested a 69 Cutlass S W-31 4 speed with a 3.42 gear that ran a 15.40 at 94 mph after a factory tune. They then turned the car over to Motion Performance who blueprinted the carb and distributor and shimmed the valve springs for more revs (among other things). After swapping in colder plugs and Mallory plug wires, the car was dyno tuned. It then ran a 14.82 @ 98 mph. And this video car is supposed to be stock?

That Olds is moving with just a 350 especially as heavy as it is. One thing about the Corvair it should get good traction. Every time I see or hear of a Corvair I think about my neighbors when I was a kid. The 2 boys had a dune buggy made from one. They were chasing me on a gravel county road. I was on my dirt bike. They lost it on a corner and about got killed. Both of them banged up but one got a broke arm cause it got under the cage when it rolled. Not wearing any belts at all. I looked back as it happened and saw the battery fly up in the air about 50 feet. It looked bad and I was worried what I would find when I went back. Was glad they were moving around. Anyhow I liked the sound of the Corvairs because they were different. Been a long time since I have seen one running.
@Uriah6253 жыл бұрын
Seeing as the Corvair makes less than half the power and had a 3.70 rear end vs 3.90, I'd say it did quite well. Gotta wonder if the turbo version of the Corvair would keep pace. 3.25 rear end in the Cougar, going for fuel economy I surmise.

Goodday C & Z, Finally, finally you put in my absolute favorite GM product & favorite model of that product. Oldsmobile W 31, I said it once & I will say it again until the cows come home, the most underrated, misunderstood, never heard of that model, muscle car from the muscle car era. You can talk about your Chevy LT-1, Mopar 340 six pack, Boss 351 etc, but nothing either Mopar or Ford build in a small block came close to the 350 hp from the W31. Yes there are a few Chevrolet small blocks pumping serious horsepower but they were mostly in Corvettes, then the famous LT-1 in the 1970 & half Camaro RS/SS which was factory rated at 360 hp. When I talk about small blocks as soon as I mention the 1968 Oldsmobile Ram Rod, people go what are you talking about. I doubt there is a W31 in Australia atm, I would love to own one one day even though I am a Mopar Man. More W31 any time just an awesome sleeper of a muscle car, very very underrated. Nearly 96 mph in a stock 6-cylinder car of that day over a measured quarter mile is NOT slow at all. GM could have done GREAT things with the line if they had stopped trying to make Corvair an "everyman's car" and concentrated on the Sport Car aspect, and it was a PROFOUNDLY poor platform to use for vans and pickups. The ridiculousness of that concept caused the line a huge black eye and siphoned money away from what they should have been doing, imo; they already had plenty of other vans and pickups but no other passenger cars like Corvair. If the Third Gen (starting in 1970) had fifty or more extra cubes and better carbs to make 250+ hp, stronger transaxle and clutch, INTELLIGENT weight distribution, better engine cooling and interior heating systems, slightly shorter wheelbase, and no fugly 4-doors it would have been a hot seller. Imagine if they had used the funds for Camaro on the Corvair. sigh
