1969 and the first part of 1970 was an epic fail for Ford on all its intermediate line. Gluing the glass in instead of bolting it in was one of many cost cutting measures, and it just did not go well. In this comprehensive video Don shows us how to service just about every piece front and rear on a 1969 Cougar. Don also shows the many differences 1969 vs early 1970 and late 1970. Keep in mind all the tips shown here directly apply to a 69-70 Mustang Coupe or convertible; many will also apply to the 69-70 Fastback. Even if you choose not to do the repairs shown here yourself the information is invaluable and you should insist on having your tech review this video before proceeding on your car.
The parts we used in this video can be found in the glass section of our website here: www2.cougarpartscatalog.com/Co...

For everyone struggling to get the glass with brackets back in the door, here is a tip. There is a square hole towards the front of the door that is big enough to fit the bracket in easily. Simply put the rear side of the glass in at the square hole towards the front, then once it is in slide it back and put the front side in the same hole. Works like a charm without touching the paint.

I'm currently restoring a one owner '69 Mustang Fastback for the original lady owner. I had to remove the driver door (removed the fender first) because the door dropped significantly when opened. The door is sitting on my workbench so I can sand and paint the sides before I install the weatherstripping. While sitting on my workbench I noticed the window glass was falling out of the aluminum brackets and I now need to everything together. Thanks to this video I've learned some valuable tricks on how to do it properly. THANKS SO MUCH!!

Thank you so much for making this video. I have a 71 Lincoln Continental Mark 3 and it is built pretty much the exact same way. I had no idea what glue to use or how any of the multiple adjustment points worked. I'm not sure about your Cougars but the rear quarter on my Lincoln actually slides rearward into the C pillar. First vehicle I've ever had that does that trick.

I always enjoy your videos mate. You're honest in what you say. Im rebuilding a 69 Mustang fastback for a customer and last week removed all door glass and components. Wasn't too hard but little tricky getting the glass out. I'm not at all impressed with the belt line design, hopeless for heavy tropical storms. Would prefer beltline rubbers like the ones used on GM coupe cars, lot larger and sits tight against the glass thereby providing a near water tight seal. The Mustang ones will have rain water gushing into the doors. I also would like you to show a video on 69 70 Fastback rear glass removal/install and most importantly how to seal the rubber against any leaks. Google and you'll be surprised how many people complain about new rubber seals leaking water, even after they add 3M sealant into the grooves etc. I rebuild more European classics and handful of American. The Euro ones hardly have such issues, like a one time install and you're done for good. And most certainly you don't wrestle with things. Cheers mate

Awesome video. I just did every one of my brothers windows on his 69 convertable, copying these instructions almost to a tee. Great idea on scuffing the windows, I used the sandpaper tool on my dremel which worked great. When doing the quarter windows, I never removed the piece that bolts to the regulator. I was able to do it all in the car, which was easy. Just gotta be careful to not get any glue on the seals. Slid them in from the gap in the front with the mounting bracket down a few inches. Windows go up and down so smooth no after cleaning all the sliders and regreasing. Chris homan

Now this is what I'm interested in. Are you still out there? I did the driver side taking it all out and then putting it in. I did not do it as easy as it was for Don. I want to do it all in the car for the passenger side. You took the brackets out of the door, and glued them on the glass, and put it back in the car without taking out the regulator? Or did you leave everything in the door, except the glass itself. Then somehow dropped the glued glass into the brackets in the door? Thanking you in advance.

Great video. I did find that setup of epoxy is a mess. I used a caulking gun and two dowel rods to push into the epoxy. Some of the epoxy came out the back end. And this stuff is barely enough for one window. Not enough if you have cleaned the entire mount out and it's bare metal. I was able to use plastic toilet shims to center the glass. The shims break off easy after it dries. Just make sure to get the shims with the ribs that can break off against mounts.

I love all the information in this only thing I'd find more helpful is accurate measurement of the bottom of all the glass mentioned in both metric, an standard inch. I'm guessing from the bottom front to bottom back since there are so many different options. I hope to convert all door rear quarters to 1970 bolt in. Just acquired a 1969. That is rough but feel brave enough to make this non running driving cat into a daily driver.

Did you need to do anything special to ensure that the glass will seal properly against the weatherstripping and doesn't tilt too far out from the body once you've glued the brackets to the glass? I tried to do this job on an old Ranchero years ago and failed miserably. I did everything like you describe here but the top of the glass stuck out too far from the car and wouldn't seal against the weatherstripping when I was done. Now I have a 68 Fairlane with the same problem. Any advice is most appreciated! Thanks!

Great video, i have a 70 mustang, my passenger side glass is not riding in the weatherstrip channel at the front(too far inboard), it also rubs the upper front stop with the front window metal guide. I got frustrated and stopped before i broke something. Mine are bolt in glass 70 style. I was watching your video, at 11:40 or so, you said those runners are the same on the drivers side, are you gonna tell me they are slightly different on the passenger side and solve my problem. I have the front one on the back and need to swap them. I really hope you just solved my dilemma. I did have all the guts out for cleaning/ restoring evolutions. Thanks for you videos and help!

About to embark on a project to do this on a 69 Mustang Boss 302. Driver side glass fell out. Shape it's in on the inside of the door is probably akin to what you found in the cougar and that old bonded door you showed outside. This video is a God send. I searched but found nothing about the rear quarter glass (gotta go in similarly for it too). I am confident I can complete this as per your guidance. However, I have no idea at all about the quarter glass. Hardware looks good down in the panel but the glue rotted and it fell out too. Do you have a video for how to get the quarter glass done also? I feel I could glue the glass in there without taking anything out if need be but would be concerned about the location of where it would be glued on to the bracket for a good fit whan rolled up. Thanks!

Figured id point out for anyone doing this on a 68/69 Fairlane, you will want to shoot for around 1 1/4" from edge of glass. Just went through this process, assuming that 1" would be standard, and got to dremel out the slot a good 1/4" in order to get the windows far enough forward.

Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your expertise. I will certainly watch this again. Two question : My driver door will not close if the window is all the way up. Should the top of the window fit flush to the gasket in the door or should it be recessed into the gasket? There is a metal "thing" at the inside rear of the top of the door frame that is hitting the glass when I close the door. What is that?

After installing new plastic guide clips my guide bracket is still loose on the rail. As you mentioned, these repro clips are not the same as the originals. Just wondering if you have tried giving the guide bracket a squeeze in a vice to try to reduce the gap so there is less play, or do you risk damaging the bracket?
@FracturedKitten
@FracturedKitten 6 жыл бұрын
Well answered my own question. Tried giving them a bit of a squeeze in the vice tonight and now they fit perfectly with no play. You can also use the new plastic guides with a very thin shim of plastic under the wings as someone else mentioned. Something like the clear plastic of the lid of a shirt box or some type of rigid plastic packaging works well. It doesn't have to be very thick. It's amazing the difference a thin slither under each wing of the guides can make. The guides clip in very tightly so there is little chance of them falling out.

If you have bolt in glass space is not an issue. If you have glue in feed the glass in through the back. To learn more login at classiccougarcommunity.com and post on the forum

I was to by a 70+ years young man who has owned ford all his life. If you soak the window glass brackects overnight in lacquer thinner it will eat the glue away enough to get the old glass out. Gonna try it just haven't got around to that project yet. Great video by the way! (question) will the chrome weather strip on the side of the window fit on a 70? I like the look.

Not a bad idea! And no, the '69 vertical chrome piece won't work on a '70, as the size of the door and quarter windows are different, and on the '70 you get a vertical trim piece on the quarter window instead of the door window.

So on a 70 mustang FB,slide the glass in on the rails and then fit the window mechanism? PS your videos are always on song

The factory workers had it easy because they assembled ALL the door guts BEFORE the door skin went on which is why they could do it so fast and effortless.

I know you gave the 1" measurements from the edge of the glass for the brackets. But how deep does the glass have to be in the channel? All the way touching the bottom, or I've read 3/8" shim on the bottom of channels??
@WestCoastClassicCougar
@WestCoastClassicCougar 7 ай бұрын
About 3/8" is the correct spacing.

I just found this video and have a question. All of the hardware you show for the 69 looks identical to the stuff inside my 68 Torino. Do you know if it is interchangeable?

Almost every part in the torino door is at least a little different. Same design, different size.

@@donrush5690 how about the "one inch each side" rule to glue the glass? Does it apply to torino too?

+cameron kline Maybe you could make some little wooden spacers / wedges on either end of the glass to keep it centered in the channel? Not sure, get creative!

NOW I read this... This would've been a good thing to know before I glued it wrong. Guess I'll be buying this customer a new set of brackets and maybe a window before it's all over. What a terrible design.

This is great however I would like to point something out. You mention that the window guide brackets face forward as they ride up and down on the window guide rods, however in the cut out door they face backwards or to the rear of the car. Which is correct?
@donrush5690

The cut away is wrong. Good eye! Actually they seem to work the same which ever way they are placed.

In the Mustang Part & Body Illustrations manual that I have they face backwards or to the rear of the car. ie. The arms point to the rear.

I have a 1969 Mustang convertible with the glue in glass. Need to confirm that the plates mount the same as your cougar, that is 1" from the edge of the glass. Please respond.

I noticed he said the track bracket openings face forward but the car with the cut up door the openings were facing to the rear.

I asked our used parts guys and they said: We've seen those both facing forward, facing back, facing each other, facing away from each other... not sure if there's a real right way to do it. The assembly manual doesn't show, and Ford did not seem to be consistent when installing them. Don said that in the video because the ones he was working with seemed to fit better that way.
