Window Regulator Replacement - 1967-68 Cougar / Mustang

If your door window is difficult to crank up or down, you probably need a new regulator! In this video, we show how to replace a worn out window regulator in a 1968 Mercury Cougar. This also applies to Mustangs and other vintage FoMoCo products with manual crank windows.
Don goes over everything involved, from removing the door panel, to installing and lubricating the new regulator, and a few other "while you're at it" tasks.

Always use valve lapping compound on the screwdriver with old Phillips heads. Extra grip. Awesome aviation trick.

A couple really key things I liked was your care to clean all the slides and re greasing everything, and also, your explanation of the three screws holding the window glide in place.

Don, great video! Really helped on my 1968 Cougar restoration. My car was completely disassembled and your video and diagram helped immensely. I do have a question, how do you install the 2 stops at the rear window guide?

For anyone that wants to take the window all the way out of the door, you MUST remove the beltline weather stripping at the top of the door. You need to remove both the fuzzy felt inner piece as well as the "windshield-wiper style" outer piece. You'll need to pry the clips out of the door. Try not to bend them up too much or they will be all wavy when you put them back in. I was trying not to disturb mine as I didn't want to mess them up, but after an hour of struggling to get the glass out I finally took both of them off and then the glass came right out. What a pain!

You explain to use painters tape etc to hold the window up but I didnt see any. I'm using one of those inflatable pads used for opening locked cars to keep the window in the up position but cant see one of those either. Are you using a piece of wood out of sight inside the door to hold the glass up?

I was able to remove the window out of the door... Is there an easy way to remove the epoxy which attached to the glass and the metal parts?

Need help adjusting 67 mustang door glass. Not replacing it. I put all new weather stripping and cat wiskers on. And not it wants to roll the rubber off the metal. Its to tight. But no matter how i adjust it, the glass dont move. Got any videos on that?

I needed this video to help me. I am replacing the regulators on my 1967 Ford Galaxie and; though there are obvious differences, the basics are pretty much the same. I was wondering if you could tell us what lube/grease you use and where I can find a window slide for a 1967 Galaxie.

Don, What grease are you using for the tracks and inside the door lubrication points?

Item #: 14-0012 on our site. Others will work but this product is designed for brakes and will not run in the heat. Think about how warm the cavity of your door can get in direct sunlight, especially if your car is a dark color.

It's a little late now , I used facet grease it doesn't melt and looked like the dark colored stuff already in the tracts. At a $1.50 for enough to all the windows it seemed like it was meant to be ! I don't know what window grease clear costs ,but I'm sure they want you to buy it for the reasons they will tell you. Oh well I'm happy!

The three screws holding the track on top rounded out with the screwdriver as you predicted they might. I tried getting out with an “EZ-out” screw extractor bit used with impact drill motor, the bit won’t bite. Any suggestions on getting them out without wrecking the parts?

Take your time. Start with a small drill bit and work your way up in drill bit size until you can get that track off. Then you should be able to get the remnants of the old screws out (without damaging the threads in the door) then just install new screws when putting it all back together (secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/p/13020-Door-Window-Regulator-Slide-Screw-EACH-Repro-1967-1968-Mercury-Cougar-1967-1968-Ford-Mustang.html).

Excellent video mate. My regulators were really bad that I ended up buying new ones. Sadly they were Taiwanese made hence the poor quality construction of the teeth and gears. It has more free play than the 50 year old regulator that I removed. It is also noisy at the end of the travel esp when glass is up. If yours are also Taiwanese/Chinese made, then it all only looks good on TV like most cases I've seen. Tell me frankly about the quality of your parts. Thanks a lot.

Added a new window regulator from you all. Its still very hard to roll up and now has a little poping noise as i roll it up or down. Took it off and made sure everything was lined up..still same problem. Do you think the window needs to be adjusted?

If it is missing yes. Usually the factory, spray on sound deadener stays in place unless the door has been dented. An easy go around is applying one of the many "peel and stick" tar based products like Dyno-Mat

my drivers door window on my 69 mach1 rattle inside when the window is all the way down.. when I close the door. years ago I had to re glue them both sides. but not sure why the window bangs inside the door.. if I pull up the window just enough to see it then it stops. seems like im missing something inside the door..

No, those will not directly fit the 67-68.

what is the best way to set the rivet for the roller if I only need to change that part?

Using a wide center punch on the backside of the rivet will spread it apart. If it were a used roller, tapping is the option to go with.

Restoration shop removed ALL of the components from the door on my 67 Fastback, so nothing was in place when I got my car back. Anyone know of any videos where they install EVERYTHING? Most critical to me is what order to put everything back in.
