My uncle has one that he has kept in prime condition since he got it 20 something years ago. He also has an ORIGINAL Bug which he spent 20k on restoring, getting wheel covers rechromed, buying only the best whitewall tires, and giving a an amazing cherry red paint job with a fresh coat o wax every once in a while.

Congratulations on a beautiful job. I saw the many, many still photos of this project on your website, and this video doesn't do justice to all the work you put into it. It's an amazing car. I had '61 and '69 KGs, and I miss the thrill of driving them...even when the rain would leak in through the rust holes in the '61's floorboard.

🤙Kathleen Bergeron I love your comment and I drove 58 Kg in Germany and a 69 Volkswagen here in the states but it had to to be push start quite often and I even had to parallel park a few times by pushing it forward backward and then the steerimg. You get the idea ! but I must sa mine arms were so toned and beautiful LOL. I wouldn't alter those memories for anything and I still have my 58 my daughter is going to be driving soon but she doesn't want any part of this vehicle is mine no power window steering Etc and I think to myself..." yes she is just a bit too much vehicle for you my love...😎 oh and the smell! just the smell all together makes the years of sticky silk blouses and melting makeup all the better!! not to mention the fact of a 69 Volkswagen you can basically put the engine together clean everything up no time flat and for that alone I'm wet all over again.... game glitches

The Karmann Ghia is a great example of Italian design work meeting German engineering. For me it wiil always be one of the most beautiful cars of the 1960s. Yes, of course there is the E-Type and many more iconic cars of this era, but the Ghia was not only beautiful, it was also affordable, robust and useful as an everyday car. The car we see here was beautifully restored and looks just perfect, very good job. Only the wheels could be a bit more authetic and I would have chosen a retro car stereo instead. By the way, did you know that the Karmann Ghia was never commissioned by Volkswagen? The German car body maker Karmann took a VW beetle chassis and asked the Italian designer Luigi Segre of Carrozzeria Ghia in Torino to design a new sporty body which was then put on top of the beetle chassis. This new car was presented to Volkswagen and they were istantly impressed by the design and started production. Well done, Mr. Karmann! In Germany the Karmann Ghia is called "Hausfrauenporsche" (a Porsche for housewives) which is not very flattering and resembles the sexist and male-dominated attitude of the 1960s and 1970s.

wd-40 works good on squeaky hinges, love that ghia ,very nice

Gregory Shaffer thank you! I did replace that squeaky hinge. We have them rebuilt and this one was too tight. I should have reshot the video after replacing the hinge.

Wd40 is temporary. A little white lithium grease or bearing grease on the pin would last longer and not run down and collect dirt beneath the hinge in the jamb.

I had a 67 Karmann up until a few years ago, there was a little problem with water seeping in the right side foot well behind the driver (right hand steering in South Africa) I exhausted every possibility in finding this leak or so I thought! The water coming in was only a problem on a LONG trip 500 miles or more in wet rainy weather.... After tearing my hair out I chanced upon an article in an English VW magazine of someone who wrote in & had the same problem as I had, the tech team of the magazine advised that they knew of this frustrating problem.... THEY GAVE THE SOLUTION which I immediately executed regardless of procrastination.... Here's how to solve it.. Take the right rear wheel off (in the US that would be the passenger rear wheel) this must be done in a darkened area, now rig a lead light in the centre of the wheel arch, then go in the car & carefully pull off the carpet that goes over the w/arch, next you will find another sort of carpet which is the sound proofing this must also be pulled off but only at the apex of the wheel arch, with a wire brush brush off the glue & hairs of this s/proofing, & you will then see a little pin prick of LIGHT showing through from your lead light!! Apparently that little hole or gap was a factory fault which occurred when the body work panel over the arch was folded, I'm not sure if it was in all Ghias or just the 67, I sealed that little hole with some bitchumen & the problem vanished. Hope this helps someone with the same problem.

Thank you for the compliment. Yeah, that hinge decided to squeak during the vid and ruined it. Its been a hot topic lol. I actually replaced the hinge as I couldnt get it to stop the intermittent squeak.

With the wheels and lowering it is only missing one thing: A dual carb bigger motor with a trick exhaust from A1 muffler in Santa Ana, CA. Then this car would be a true cal looker. Why go for the lowered look and wheels but no performance? A 1776 or 1904 is just as reliable as a stock 1600 too. Call FAT performance in Orange, CA or CB performance and have a motor built. Nothing like a little HP to go with a nice looking car.

This was a build for a customer which is what most of our builds are. He didnt want a big engine, at least not at the time of the build. I'm with you, a little more HP makes the drives much more fun. We have built several Ghias with big engines. We build most of the engines we use on our projects here on site, but both of the builders you recommended are great sources for performance engines.
