Hard to believe this is the very first time I've seen this commercial! Hilarious effects (Coyote whirling around a space capsule, etc.) and clever arrangement of the Plymouth jingle (which started life as "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" from Spanky and Our Gang)!

What a good time. Good music, good cartoons, good cars with big V8 engines. Today the songs and cartoons are crude and cars are electric.

Even the bare-bones version in bright metallic blue with dog dish hubcaps would make this twelve year old car nut "freeze" in awe every time it rumbled by. I have to wonder if there's ever been a case where a Prius or Volvo had a similar effect on anyone? Heck, have they ever had ANY effect on anyone for that matter?

@@williehill47 Tell me you're not a car guy without telling me you're not a car guy. My VIN said the car originally came with a 383. So we can come to the conclusion that someone swapped motors before I bought it. We can also come to the conclusion that my 150 mph Speedometer was swapped out with one from a GTX as well. It's crazy people had the technology to swap engines back in the 80's!!!!!!!!!!

Weird, how a stripped down version of a car could win Car of the Year? The Road Runner was a bare bones version of the Belvedere model, it was such a budget model that it could be ordered with no radio and cheap rubber floor mats. The only thing that made the Road Runner unique was the name and the beep beep horn. It you wanted a nicer car, you ordered it as the Belvedere model, but I guess Belvedere doesn't sound as cool as Road Runner even though you got a lesser car with the Road Runner name.
@ceemurray87043 жыл бұрын
As a Road Runner owner, I can tell you that your assessment of the car is ALL WRONG. First and foremost, what made the Road Runner TRULY unique in that era was that it was the VERY FIRST mid size car that had a special and unique to that model ONLY, HIGH PERFORMANCE big block engine/ a four speed trans/ heavy duty suspension and brakes/ dual exhausts/ ALL for UNDER $3000 bucks. By keeping the STANDARD OPTIONS low, Chrysler was able to produce a musclecar that the AVERAGE guy could afford and could insure. This was a BIG DEAL for the times. PLUS, many of those muscelcars weren't just "weekend warriors", they were also used as family cars and grocery getters. So size was an issue also. HOWEVER, Road Runners had an extensive option list just like every other car so one could "doll it up" as much as one could afford. A step up from the Road Runner was the GTX which came with a bigger standard engine/ was plusher/ and came with more standard options. And the upgraded engine option on both models was the 426 HEMI, which was a SERIOUS exclamation point!! And to name a car after a CARTOON, was revolutionary/ brilliant/ funny, all at the same time. Just having the cartoons on the body was something that soon ALL other companies copied. And street image was EVERYTHING then and still is today. And to have the car horn MIMIC the Road Runner cartoon was itself revolutionary/ brilliant/ funny, all at the same time. In fact, the horn ITSELF was so popular, that guys were stealing them from Road Runners and putting them on their own NON Road Runner cars. That '69 model also came in three bodystyles and a special model with a lift off hood and three carb engine. So there was more than enough to justify a Car Of The Year award.
