1969 World Series, Game 3: Orioles @ Mets

Baltimore Orioles 0 at New York Mets 5, F -- With the Series tied one and one, the "Miracle Mets" were back at Shea Stadium and ready to take the lead. Tommie Agee got the momentum going with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first. In the fourth inning, with runners on the corners and two outs in the fourth, Agee would amaze again with an over-the-shoulder grab at the wall to end the inning. And he wasn't finished there. With bases loaded in the seventh inning, Agee made a diving grab of a line drive in right-center. The Orioles would remain scoreless thanks in part to Tommy Agee, while the Mets scored four more runs in the game, taking the lead in the Series.

It was, ironically, the "Oriole Way" that brought the Mets that 1986 title...Frank Cashen helped build this Orioles team and then went to NY and built (and then tore apart) the 80's Mets. He brought Davey Johnson to NY too.

Yes, he made the last out for the Orioles, which made the Mets world champs for 1969. I read in his book "Bats" that right after the '69 Series ended, that the Orioles made up their minds they were going to win it all the next year, which they did. In Mr. Johnson's 1st 2 years of managing the Mets, they were runners-up in the NL East, losing out to the Cubs in '84 and the Cardinals in '85. When they were eliminated in '85, he employed the same strategy, telling the team "I want us to make up our minds that we're going to win it all next year." The Mets responded by going 108-54 in '86 and winning a 7-game World Series in breathtaking fashion over the Red Sox. Interestingly, Boston would win the 2004 World Series on the 18th anniversary of their losing the '86 tourney (October 27).

Curt Gowdy was one of the best of all time and Lindsey Nelson was also a broadcast legend. Two legends equal a pretty good broadcast. They knew when to talk and when to be quiet. Unless today's announcers who feel they have to talk almost 100% of the time and analyze every play even though we just saw it with our own eyes.

I think MLB brass should hold a meeting of all owners and managers. The purpose of the meeting: to revive baseball. And in this meeting, show this particular exciting game. This really was fun to watch, beginning to end. It was exciting because the game was played during the day. It was exciting because the pace was infinitely quicker than it has been since. It was exciting because the broadcasters and interviewers were all knowledgeable, interesting and professional. It was exciting because the starting pitcher stayed put for much longer than today’s pitchers

@ 2:14:25... This was Paul Blair's second at bat in the game against Nolan Ryan. He hit the ball in the 7th inning with the bases loaded that Tom Agee made a great catch on. He saw 3 fastballs in that at bat. In this at bat here in the 9th inning, he had seen 2 fastballs for a total of 5 pitches in two at bats, all of them fastballs. Now, check out the pitch Ryan throws here to end the game. Talk about a batter having absolutely no chance! Watch the knees buckle!

Another thing is that Curt and Lindsey did NOT try to be a manager and express smart-alecky remarks like in today's broadcasts. I'm an announcer myself and you saw that they stuck to reporting and added facts pertaining to the players and the game! That's how you're supposed to call a game. It's no wonder why Gowdy and Nelson had the careers they've had and being inducted into the Hall of Fame was a "no brainer" nor a shocker. Both called other events well, especially football!

I was only a casual observer from about 1985 - 2005, when the Nationals returned to D.C. I went to about 50 games that year and was pretty shocked at how poorly the game was played from the perspective of executing all of the little things that made baseball what it was to me as a player and fan from '63 - '85. It would be tough to coach today if you were an old time baseball man.

Fewer commercials, pitchers pitched complete games, announcers were professional and you could close your eyes and still know what was going on and they didn’t read endless advertisements during the game. Also the games were played in the daytime for the most part as it should be. I miss baseball as it used to be.

And they were not sissies back then. They didn't wear batting gloves and shin guards and they played injured. That was dedication to the game. And folks dressed up nice when they went out in public. Times have changed since then.

The Mets PA Announcer-Former WNEW-AM Sports Director, Jack Lightcap. He became the Mets public address announcer in 1965 replacing original PA Man Jack E. Lee who left when he was hired to announce harness racing at Roosevelt Raceway. Lee also announced Pro Wrestling at Madison Square Garden. Lightcap would announce opening day of 1970 plus two more games at Shea vs. the Philadelphia Phillies. After the Phillies series, Lightcap stepped down. The last game at Shea he announced was on April 17th, 1970, a 6-0 shut out by Tom Seaver. Note, that year the Mets FINALLY won an opening day in their history when they won in Pittsburgh, 5-3, in 11 innings. Lightcap died later that year from cancer on June 29th. He was 53 years old. Lorne Matthews took over as PA announcer at Shea on April 18th, 1970.

As a 10 year old Brooklyn Boy, I remember watching the World Series! I've seen this a number of times. At 1:25, you saw a kite fly over Shea Stadium and Lindsey Nelson and Curt Gowdy were talking about possibly a human would fly over Shea. Lindsey said "Don't bet against it!". Well, it so happens that in the same ballpark 17 years later when Michael Sergio flew over Shea and parachuted down onto the field! That was Game 6 of the '86 Series when the Mets miraculously won that game!

I ran baseball card shows in the 80s and early 90s in Pa.and NJ. I had Mr. Agee as a signer at my show in Somerset in 93. What a gentleman. I spoke to him a few times on the phone to make preparations for his appearance. When speaking to him I always called him Mr. Agee and he always insisted that I call him Tommie. I told him that he was always Mr. Agee to because it was a sign of respect. What a gentleman. My favorite Met from 1969. May he rest in peace.

NOLAN RYAN was traded by the New York Mets with 3 players to the California Angels in exchange for Jim Fregosi on 12/10/1971. Fregosi batted just .232 with 5 hr & 32 rbi in 101 games for the Mets in 1972. In 1973, Fregosi hit only .234 with 0 hr & 11 rbi in 45 games for the Mets before being sold to the Texas Rangers on 7/11/73. Fregosi was a part-time player the rest of his career, and played his last game on 5/31/78. Needless to say, this was one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history.

In a 1987 interview with Howie Rose on Mets Extra, Don Kessinger, the Cubs long time shortstop, was asked about the Mets pitching staff of this era. He said the Mets pitcher the Cubs liked to face LEAST was Gary Gentry -because his ball had so much movement on it. Gentry had more movement on his pitches than Seaver, and a wider array of secondary pitches than Tom Terrific. No. 41 would of course further develop his arsenal over time, but at this stage threw a bit harder and had better control than Gary.

Yes indeed 144Donn. As pointed out by Kevin VanMeter earlier, the Shea Stadium PA announcer for this World Series was Jack Lightcap. How little did we know that Game 5 of the 1969 World Series would be the last game he would announce in a healthy state -- in the early months of 1970 he was diagnosed with cancer. Because of this illness he only announced the first three home games of the 1970 season -- the final game he announced before entering the hospital was on April 17, 1970. He died a little more than two months later. 😢

I still believe that if they played each other 100 times, Orioles would have won 60 games. In a short 7 game Series, anything can happen. Pitching usually decides a short series, and Mets pitching was outstanding, while Orioles pitching was very good, but not great.

The Mets had a no-name offense. (Of course, Met fans know and love each of those guys). But prior to 1969, I don't think a team ever made it to the WS with such an unheralded group of hitters.

As I watch this great World Series I have to say what a great pleasure it is to here these two announcers, Curt Gowdy and Lindsey Nelson! They make it interesting all the way through these games without having the now, color commentates that they have today. Non stop babble to the point that I have to mute the sound! Also do you see the time it takes to complete these games! No 3 to 4 hour games in those days! Some games were completed in less than two hours, so what does that tell you! Boring BS in today's games!

What a great series. Hard to believe the 1969 Mets could be that good after suffering so much the first 5 seasons, 2 of which were at the old Polo Grounds. As a young boy my friends and I would get a ride from a family member from New Rochelle to the the closest subway station, which I believe was at Dyer Avenue in the Bronx, and then from there head on down to the Polo Grounds where the authorities allowed us entry into the ball park close to 3 hours before the game. My Dad owned a deli on Main Street in New Rochelle and he would pack us off with all kinds of sandwiches and snacks and away we went for a day of unbelievable fun! Once at the Park we would start eating our lunch and head on down to the area behind the dugout where guys like Jimmy Piersal, Duke Snider, Rod Kanehl, Frank Thomas, Choo Choo Coleman, Jim Hickman, Ron Hunt and others were warming up and holy cow did we enjoy talking with them........espcially the enigmatic Jimmy Piersal. By the way the Orioles starter for game 3 of the 1969 WS, Jim Palmer, was one of the greatest of all time. Would you believe that he has the honor of being the only pitcher to ever beat 2 guys even greater than him in World Series play. Hint: 2nd game of the 1966 WS & 3rd game of the 1983 WS. Who were the 2 losing pitchers in those WS games?

28:40/ Mr. Earhart, God bless you. Back when you could be famous for being a sign guy for your favorite team. The 60's were certainly a crazy time in American history. How many Vietnam War soldiers turned in to NBC Radio or the Armed Forces Network to hear this broadcast! July of that very 1969 season saw the world stop to watch a man set foot on the moon! And a certain NYC mayor had his career saved by hopping on the Mets bandwagon after their Game 5 victory. Crazy times, indeed...🇵🇷🇺🇸😎

I remember folks with shortwave radios in the US. It was a way to listen to the home games of teams outside your local area. AFRTS not only helped soldiers abroad, it helped folks who loved listening to sports from across the US.

this is the day we all could see in color. two days prior, we could only see in black and white. everything became so clear. i wish they wouldn't have the spoilers at the top. this, of course, was when we used to have to walk six miles in six feet of snow, to get to school

Scott Viau In 1969, all major sporting events In America was in Color. However the reason the first 2 games from Baltimore was in Black and White is because as of now the original color broadcasts has never been found. While the games at Shea Stadium shown here was from the master control center for NBC with its headquarters in NYC just several miles from Shea. Thus the only available full video games of Games 1 and 2 here are the black and white are taped from kinescope and off a simulcast feed shown from the Canadian Television station CBC (Canadian Broadcasting System.)

New York really stuck it to Baltimore that year - Mets Jets and Knicks beat the Bullets in their run to 1970 title...too bad Baltimore didn't have a hockey team or we could have went for the Grand Slam

During the 1969-70 Eastern Conference semi-finals, the Bullets pushed the Knicks to seven games. That series had an aura of tension that reminded one of the Cold War. Both teams matched up very well, with the Knicks arguably having an advantage at center and the Bullets at shooting guard. A loose ball here or a rebound there and the Bullets would have won.

Malcolm Gladwell in his book "Tipping Point" talks about why so many pro athletes are born in October. He says it is because they were born too late in the year to get into school and so they went to school the next year where they were the biggest kids in the class and excelled at sports against their peers. Very good book to read on other stuff too!

Wonder what would have happened had Gary not blown out his arm and continued with the Mets into the mid-1970s. Throw Nolan Ryan in there, and you'd have -Seaver, Koosman, Matlack, Ryan, Gentry probably the greatest pitching staff in history. They were all on the staff in 1971. So close.

wheelinthesky300 Before my time but hindsight is always 20/20. What is interesting about Ryan in 1971 the last year he was with the Mets he had a truly awful 2nd half of 1971 which you don't notice if you look at the full year stats and with this performance the Mets thought he no longer had the potential to be a very good pitcher who gave up very few hits and many strikeouts but with some control issues which is what he ended up becoming and also being extremely durable . As a fan I wouldn't have been upset trading him just looking at the numbers although obviously numbers aren't everything. He was good in the first half having a very low ERA in the low 2's but his peripheral's were normal for Ryan and a little lucky to have as low ERA as he had giving up 6.3 hits per 9 innings and 5.3 walks per 9 innings and 93 strikeout in 92 innings. However, in the 2nd half of 1971 (From July to the end of the year) Ryan pitching was truly bad. In 16 games and 14 starts he only pitched 60 innings and in those innings he gave up 61 hits 62 walks 9 hit batsman and only 44 strikeouts. This is more then 2 runners per inning and it is surprising that even Ryan has a stretch where he gave up more then a hit an inning and had more walks then strikeouts. His ERA for the 2nd half was 6.94 and his runs allowed was 8.14. I don't know if his arm was tired or had some minor injury but his 2nd half in 1971 was truly awful with his strikeouts down too and something may have been wrong but obviously wasn't major and Ryan was able to move on from it but the Mets may have thought that something was majorly wrong and not fixable at this point and other teams looking at the full year stats didn't realize what the Mets knew of how bad he was in the 2nd half and possibly damaged goods which obviously whatever the problem was it wasn't any major physical injury. If I were a met fan back then and see those numbers in the 2nd half of 1971 I would think something is very wrong with Ryan. They did trade him when his value was likely at the lowest point and the player they got had an injury issue but maybe the Mets thought something was wrong with Ryan as well with his struggles in the 2nd half (which maybe the other team didn't know just by looking at the stats for the year) and let him be someone else's problem which of course they were wrong.
