Ken Barnhart, the original owner of ZL1 Camaro number 16 firing it up and driving it to the trailer to load up after the Fred Gibb car show in Laharpe, Illinois. Although not the original engine this car still retains an all alunimun 427 ZL1 motor. This car has been at numerous Chevy shows and has been featured in many car magazines. Ken is likely the only original ZL1 owner who still has the car to this day.

I saw a real 1969 ZL-1 (the number was in the low 60’s as I recall) about 10 years ago in the car show area at Auto Club Famoso Raceway outside Bakersfield, CA. It was at a race event, either a March Meet or a Hot Rod Reunion. What was the most amazing thing was that the owner drove it there from his home in Bakersfield. It was really cool to get to see such a rare car up close.

Just 69 were built in all out of 178,000 Camaros, including the last of the first generation completed during 1970. Also during 1969, Don Yenko built another 201 copies as the Camaro Yenko SC.

@@angelperez7891 The Yenko cars were cast iron 427 COPO Camaros, NOT the all aluminum 427 ZL-1 powered Camaros . The ZL-1s were the brainchild of Fred Gibb the owner of Fred Gibb Chevrolet in LaHarpe , Illinois .

@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 I forgot to tell about Yenko's SC model that the engine was an L88 code 427 which is what you said, a cast-iron block unit, not a ZL-1.

@@angelperez7891 the Yenko SC was a L-72 all iron engine , the L-88s had aluminum heads and were not , repeat not put in Yenko cars . Now Baldwin -Motion did build L-88 equipped cars as did Nickey Chevrolet , and probably Dickie Harrel thru Fred Gibb Chevrolet . Contrary to popular believe, Yenko was not that big into high performance unlike the delears that I have mentioned , he was scared of being drug into court for a wrongful death lawsuit attributed to one of his cars . They may look fast and sexy , but they could have been much faster .

@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 L-72? I thought it was the L-88 from the previous-year Corvette.

You could buy it new in 1969 fully loaded, including the aluminum 427 V8, for $7,300.
