When I was a kid, my father always had Cadillac Sedan DeVilles - not this old, they were the late 80s to 90s models. And while they weren't particularly sporty, being big luxury boats with 3-across bench seating front and rear, they had decent power and were VERY smooth. I'd imagine that with a steady enough hand and good knowledge of braking points they could actually be quite quick around a track, relative to other big, heavy American luxury cars of the era.

But then a copper gets behind you. Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind him ... and then he will start apologizing, begging for mercy. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do - when you're running along about 100 or so and you suddenly find a red-flashing CHP-tracker on your tail - what you want to do then is accelerate. Never pull over with the first siren-howl. Mash it down and make the bastard chase you at speeds up to 120 all the way to the next exit. He will follow. But he won't know what to make of your blinker-signal that says you're about to turn right. This is to let him know you're looking for a proper place to pull off and talk ... keep signaling and hope for an off-ramp, one of those uphill side-loops with a sign saying "Max Speed 25" ... and the trick, at this point, is to suddenly leave the freeway and take him into the chute at no less than 100 miles an hour. He will lock his brakes about the same time you lock yours, but it will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180-degree turn at this speed ... but you will be ready for it, braced for the Gs and the fast heel-toe work, and with any luck at all you will have come to a complete stop off the road at the top of the turn and be standing beside your automobile by the time he catches up. He will not be reasonable at first ... but no matter. Let him calm down. He will want the first word. Let him have it. His brain will be in a turmoil: he may begin jabbering, or even pull his gun. Let him unwind; keep smiling. The idea is to show him that you were always in total control of yourself and your vehicle - while he lost control of everything.

A boat like this hitting 110MPH on the Nurburgring is absolutely insane. I think Misha can tick few boxes off driving this and Ranchero on track and probably the only one in the world taking these 2 cars on the Ring.
@theeoddments960Ай бұрын
The engine itself isn’t all that inefficient, it’s just focused to make power at low rpm cruising speeds for passing power. All the old luxury v8s were like that. While it may only be making 300whp it’s still making 400+ foot pounds to the wheels with a 10:1 compression pre smog engine that wasn’t made for power but to last forever. The pre smog era American cars weren’t bad at all. My 66 Electra stock still runs a 7 second 0-60 time, pretty good for 4400 pounds of lead sled

@@theeoddments960 Again, 0-60 in for modern European standards is very fast. Mostly to make them fuel efficient but again, it's not something that simply happens with modern European cars. Very quiet exhaust and cabin. Sounds great from what you can hear of the v8 when revved out. Beautiful car. Less body roll than expected and surprising speed-must be all that mid range torque. Not many cars of that age could finish a lap without mechanical failure either. Looks like a fun drive!!

My friend's dad had one when I was a teen, I saw the fender badge and said is that really 8.2L?!!! Didn't get a chance to drive it, but I assumed it would do a good burnout. I was also shocked to find out it was FWD with an engine so large.

Hub caps always fall off in hard turns. Definitely would have pulled them before the run. Live and learn, beautiful car. The quietest video you have ever shot. The tire sequels and quadrajet sucking are just all indicators of what is going on outside. You now get what they were all about, riding on a cloud. So cool
@JohnSmith-pl2bk4 күн бұрын
There are other comments about the hub/wheel flexing so much that the steel wheel welds crack...allowing tubeless tyres to lose air pressure as the steel wheel flexes.... This used to stymie Caddy owners...good tyre pressure all day long when not using the vehicle but loss of air over a journey. No leak in the tyre shop water bath since the steel wasn't flexing!

Would be interesting to see a 70 buick skylark gsx go around the track. All in all I thought the Grand Dame' of the highway did quite well. Older cars like a 60s Chrysler 300 letter series car would be very slow around the track due to the all drum brake configuration - but they were quick for their time. We blew off a 75 camaro with a 72 sedan DeVille on a twisty road. Guy was so pissed came after us on the highway and we left him in the dust. The caddy accelerated S600-ish with its massive v8. (and 6 mpg observed fuel economy while we had it). I had a 64 super wildcat rivera with dual 4 bbls carbs on a 425 which would have been slow on the ring too - until the cars got disk brakes they would have been horrid on the track. Thanks for a very entertaining drive and showing the speedo as well. Car went around the track far quicker than I would have expected and thanks to the owner for letting out on the track.

This was fun. Brought back some memories for me. In 1980 I was driving a rental car in upstate New York. It was a late 70’s Ford Pinto. As I am driving I see a sign for Watkins Glen. So of course I got off the highway to check it out. It was a Saturday and the Watkins Glen track was closed (closed under construction). There was some big race coming up in the next week. In any case I noticed a gate was open and I went through it. All of a sudden I realized I was on the actual race track. No body was there and I did several laps in the Ford Pinto …… which handled like a pig. Watching Misha reminded me of the squealing tires on that poor Pinto 😂 Four years later in 1984 I moved to the US. My first car which I got for free was a 1968 Pontiac Bonneville. It had a 6.6L engine and like this Cadillac it also handled like the Titanic. So many times when I was ripping down the highway and would encounter a curve and one of the hubcaps would come flying off …. Sometimes I could see the hubcap rolling along beside my car. Then the hubcap would go off into the grass on the side and I would pull over and retrieve it.

Literally LOLing at this mass of metal hurtling around the ring. The Cadillacs of that era had very neutral, benign handling. Poke the throttle from a standstill and you’d smoke the tires all the way down the block. Quality peaked around ‘67 but the ‘70 models were still quite nice.
