In 1977 a buddy of mine (James) and I worked at a local IGA store, we were 16 and both had the muscle car itch. There were plenty of the muscle cars around including our featured Chevelle 454 SS with that awesome Cowl Induction hood scoop. James previously had a Scamp which was no slouch with a 318 V8, but he got tired of people making sport of him driving a "Scamp" (logo was a dog). I had 74 Charger 318 with 4 barrel carb, so he wanted to one up me. He shows up in a red/black Chevelle SS 454 with manual trans and that wonderful cowl induction scoop! It was a beauty and it really rumbled, making my Charger salute in the IGA lot. James was a short statured but strong friend. He soon discovered he could not reach the clutch nor could he effectively see over the dash to drive!! I will never forget his solution. He taped 2x4 wood blocks to the clutch, brake, and gas peddles !! He then proceeded to get two or three Sears catalogs to sit on so he could see over the dash. I will never forget the car thanks to James!! Great video!!

I was 11 in 1970 and the first time I saw a 70 SS with the red 454 badge on the fender I knew it was more than the SS 396 from 1969. I don't know in the one I saw was an Ls6 but still it had that rumble. Tried talking my Dad into buying one that year...we came home from the dealership in a 1970 Impala. If he had only listened... to an 11 year old.

I remember riding to the Dealership in my moms 1969 SS 396/325hp bench seat auto column shift Chevelle. My dad ordered a forrest green, white stripes, green office and buckets LS-6 4-sp 3.36 posi Chevelle. We watched transport truck pull in. Dad's LS-6 was up top. I watched dad pull plastic off seats and slide in a fire that Rat up. I road home in the back seat of my moms SS. Looking out the back window to see my dad follow us home....I was 5 and it seems like it was yesterday.

My Uncle had a 68 Chevelle SS396 in 1968, I was 10 years old. Man those were the days that 68 Chevelle would twist the dash and throw you in the seat with every gear shift. We would laugh at every stop light and high octane fuel was 34 cents a gallon. Life was so much better back then.

I used to drag race my 1968 GTX on Woodward every Saturday night. The only "stock" cars I had trouble with were the 454 Chevelle. The Chevelle pulled hard all the way up to the 100 mph limit we used to race to. For folks that were not around that time or place, I drag raced every Sturday night for 3 years and never got pulled over by police. It was wide open. Those were the days....

Chevy NEEDED to put the LS6 454 in the 70 Camaro.... would have been a MONSTER. What screw up on GM's part.

I usually don't care much for Chevelles SS , I would rather have a Camaro RS/SS . But this color combination really peaked my interest in the Chevelle, it has to be the only one I seen like it and it is gorgeous. Its like the Buick GSX there is one color I like on that and its the same for the Olds Cutlass Rallye 350, and that is Yellow. Each car I believe looks good in one, possiblely two colors and this this Chevelle is red and white combo

Another great video Kevin, I hadn't seen this one before now. I read some periodicals from the day, that felt the L-88 427 was a stronger engine. The 454 LS-6 had a higher horsepower rating on paper, however it was limited by the stock intake manifold, with runners that were too short. This was to facilitate under-hood clearance. An unnamed engineer from Chevrolet at the time, said that because the enlargement was by way of stroke, it made the engine somewhat less of a "revver", and creating some potential weak areas, particularly the connecting rods and hardware. This claim may have been unfounded... any comments from a knowledgeable expert out there? All that being said, if I recall correctly... with headers and an open carb, the 1970 LS-6 produced just over 450 brake horsepower on the dyno, as per Hod Rod magazine. Tough to beat in those days, for a stock engine. King of the Hill, indeed...

1969 I know it’s not a motor that came in cars but I have an LS7 in my 68 Camaro and the only upgrade I did was a solid roller cam and I’ll say this that motor won’t stop pulling. I’m easily making 600hp at the flywheel. It was supposed to go in the 70 corvettes to be the 454 version of an L88 but never made it.

L88 Corvette was the fastest of the bunch. They were significantly lighter than the Chevelle, and the L88 was just as powerful (if not a tad more). This made for a quicker and faster car.

Every other car on this channel is either running pig rich or blowing oil smoke. It's funny that "The Brothers" can afford a multi-million dollar car collection, but they can't afford to pay a mechanic.

That Bench seat is nice albeit odd option but paid for itself when your girl slides over....M-22 Rock Crusher Trans all day. I know of one other thing that raises to the occasion when the right pedal is mashed and the Cowl Induction opens......

Hello! Seems to me I read a magazine article sometime in the late 70s about a very limited option I believe was an LS-7 454. I am thinking the article was titled “Big Mutha” . Any input on this?

450 horse uh huh. Try those numbers again. Various dyno testing of several of them the engines were cranking out anywhere from 550-580 horse and a little massage that thing would pound 625 horses with no problem

not a L.S. engine it is just a bb chevy L.S. 454 was a small block please go read up on them from L.S. they have a big thing on the 70 chevelle and the holy grail is the 70 Chevelle with the L.S. 7 427 in it witch they build 6 of them . the 70 chevelle was to introduce the new crate engine the L.S. seares

first thing were is the l.s. the emblem on the hood right by the cawl induction and one thing is really wrong l.s. 6 454 small block were is it u have a ho 454 bbc in it u do know all l.s. engine were a small block and they look nothing like a chevy engine bb or sb and they also put a l.s. 7 427 small block in it too and if any one thinks i am full of it then go to l.s. web site who would know more about a l.s. engine then l.s. because they claim they never built a big block in history please get ur facts right before u make a video on it this car is just a 70 chevelle ss car that is it and the l.s. 6 454 has a 4 1/4 inch stroke and the 454 ho bbc has a 4 inch stroke and the stander 454 bbc has a 4 1/4 inch stroke more for pulling not power the reason for a 41/4 inch stroke for a l.s. engine is because it is a small block to increase the bottom end to give it more torque unlike the ho it has a 4 inch stroke to increase the top end for more hp and a higher rev limit

Melissa, You are confused with the LS 5, LS6, and the LS7 engines that Chevy made in 1970. The LS 7 was a crate motor only. Then in 1997 Chevy reintroduced the new LS series which was a completely different engine.
