Great matchup! Have to say I was surprised by the Goat. I picked the LT-1 Z28 all day long. Those things were real runners and surprised a lot of guys with big blocks back in the day. Never saw a 389 GTO run this quick. Hats off to the car owner/driver.

This is where the driver plays a bigger role than the car with all things being equal. I for one was a little disappointed when they dropped the DZ for 1970 in favor of the LT1. The LT is a awesome engine it's just we associated the Z28 with the 302 and a 4 speed. Also gone was the optional dealer installed cross ram induction.
@Dayandcounting
@Dayandcounting 2 жыл бұрын
The LT1 gave the Z\28 guts by adding stroke. There were 3 302's MO, MP and DZ. The MO 67,68 2 bolt main small journal crank. The MP most 68's, 4 bolt main, larger main journals still has oil filler intake. The DZ 69 adds the sexy valve covers.

Its fun daily driving a 1965 GTO all summer, but mine has a fuel injected 455 under the hood. Its interesting that a basic small hydraulic (200/207@.050) cam garden variety Pontiac engine with a tri power intake can run with a 250@.050 solid lifter, aluminum manifold, Holley carbed chevy engine. Pull the 067 cam out of the Pontiac, put a 744 or 041 in it and try again. Neither of those are even close to 250@.050, the 041 is only 231/240@.050 but still factory cams from before 1970. Ah the woulda coulda shoulda things.. Fun to think about.

A "garden variety" 11:23 to 1, tri-power, 1965 389 Pontiac engine. Yeah, those things were slow.
@SweatyFatGuy
@SweatyFatGuy 2 жыл бұрын
@@chevyblue10 Same engine as the Bonneville, all the 4 barrels had compression in the 10:1 range, it wasn't over 11:1. The 389 even had the small valves and 24 degree heads, not the 2.11 intakes, 1.77 exhaust and 14 degree inclination of the 67 and up heads. All of the D port engines are garden variety, not the round ports that are on high performance models. Those heads all flow about the same in the same inclination group, 66 and earlier, 67 and later. The 67 to 79 D port heads all flowed within 10cfm of each other, with the 350 heads from the 74 GTO flowing the most... through small valves even. Not much difference between the 421 head and the 389 head unless it was a 2 barrel 389, then it got the small valves. So the Bonneville/Catalina engine was the same as the GTO engine, provided it had a 4 barrel or Tri Power, because they all ran the same 067 cam and heads to match the induction, the big difference was chamber size which was how Pontiac adjusted compression ratios. Now if you want to consider Super Duty, HO, and RA II/IV engines, they are not the garden variety engines, they are kinda hard to come by. Sorta like how the LT-1 wasn't just plopped in everything else chevy made. The 389 was the equivalent of the 300hp 327 and 350. Far more of them built and installed than LT-1s. The Pontiacs were very mild engines, not oversized valves, 11:1, 250@.050 solid cams, and Holley carbs on aluminum intakes. Do all of that to a Pontiac and its gonna suck the headlights out of that poor little orange lump. The Qjet intakes flowed better than the Tri Power, and we only put the Tri power on for the looks, if we want to go fast we do it with a single 4. The limiting factor was the Carter AFB used before the QJet, they were tiny and didn't flow much, so the Tri Power was a decent upgrade from the AFB. Why do ya think the Max Wedge Mopars had two AFBs on them? Same reason the 421 SD had two. They were kinda small. The only small block that has ever impressed me is the 351C 4V. Those things are monsters. Which is why I own four of them and a bunch of parts. Of course the 389 doesn't need as much help as the chevy, since they did go 406mph in 1960. No chevys have gone over 400 yet, have they? Two Hemis did recently, Danny Thompson did it with Hemis, his dad, Mickey, did it with Pontiac. Where are all the oh so awesome chevys setting LSR records? Also the 389s were stock heads, blocks, and cranks. Garden variety stuff with some other stuff thrown in.

Believe it or not I was hired by a CEO family friend to drive 70 Z28 from Colorado Springs my home, to Seattle Washington. I picked up the car 1 week before I graduated High School , dark green, 4 speed. Needless to say when I arrived in Seattle the Goodyear Eagles were gone, front and rear. Our CEO friend had to buy his executive a new set of tires. Posi 4.11 rear end limited my top end to 125 as I recall. I had a great highway race across eastern Washington with a 911. Pretty sure the driver was too scared to pass, I kept waiting for the Porche to zip by but he never did.

The Z28 would rev to 7200 RPM's. If you left it in 1st, it would automatically shift into 2nd and 3rd at 7200. I know because my brother had one and I'd do that all the time while street racing. I'd beat big block cars all the time including LS6 Chevelle's only because even with the 4.10 gears the tires would only spin for 5 ft or so while the big blocks couldn't get any traction.

I think the GTO would have been better off with 3.90 gears. Pontiacs are torque machines. A 410 gears don't really make them faster. It winds it up to fast, a higher gear will allow the torque to be used more. The LT1 has a usable recline of 7500-8000 rpm. Ponchos at 6500 rpm are done, they won't put down any hp higher than that. 3.90 gears and the GTO gets him. MHO
