Parts of this commercial were filmed on the "neighborhood block" at the Columbia Ranch (now the "Warner Ranch"); you'll recognize it because almost every "Screen Gems" sitcom, from the 1950's through the 1970's, used that "neighborhood" to establish the exteriors of "homes" featured on "FATHER KNOWS BEST", "THE DONNA REED SHOW", "DENNIS THE MENACE", "HAZEL", "BEWITCHED", "I DREAM OF JEANNIE", et .al. For instance, at 0:07, that's "Major Nelson's" house from "JEANNIE" (also the "Anderson's" on "FATHER KNOWS BEST")-- and at 0:33, there's the intersection where "Samantha's" house from "BEWITCHED" is in the distance....

Barry, you read my mind. I was thinking to write that that neigborhood is the ranch used in Patridge family, house with white wooden fenses, wich can be seen when a Station wagon rear door and little girl. That location was uses also as Samantha and Darring Stevens home, wich is in front (well, almost). Glory Circle street. XD Hugs from Santiago, Chile.

This was the last ad campaign for Esso/Enco in the United States before the name change to Exxon that allowed the company to market itself under one name across the country.

And as a result, there different versions of this commercial had to be filmed (along with there different versions of the jingle) for Esso, Enco, and Humble.
@nitroforce874 жыл бұрын
I never knew that. Essos were in Puerto Rico for a long time as independent gas stations using that name under license but they disappeared over time, around early 2000s

Does "Esso" mean "stalled car" in Japanese?
@grantorino23253 жыл бұрын
@@TnseWlms No, "Enco" is a homophone of "Enko," which indeed means "stalled car" in Japanese.

@@TnseWlms Esso actually means Standard Oil, hence S O. Esso is in Europe, and Canada.

I loved this jingle but thought that the singers should have gone higher on “alive and fun.” By going down they are actually expressing emotion that goes against the words. I know, they sang it the way it was written.

I hear what you mean and you're right. It would have worked better going up, even hiking the jingle up a semitone would have added more excitement.

I grew up in the upper Midwest, so this rendition sounds odd. " ENCO helps you car stay young" has a kick to it! Esso, on the other hand sounds like a reference to a portion of the anatomy on which the sun don't shine.

Esso and Enco (along with Humble) were used simultaneously in different parts of the country. Esso was used on the East Coast from Maine to South Carolina, then across to Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Humble was once used in the southwest (including Texas), but was used only in Ohio during the 1960's and early 1970's. Enco was used everywhere else between 1960 and 1972 (prior to that, Standard Oil of New Jersey used Carter, Pate, and Oklahoma as gasoline brand names in most of what later became the Enco territory).
