This magnificent 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT 429 SCJ V8 Drag Pak has 15,392 original miles and is one of only 73 built with the 429 Super Cobra Jet V8 Drag Pak. It’s completely original matching numbers throughout including the rebuilt 429 SCJ V8 that dyno tested with 527HP and 599 Ft-Lbs. The Super Cobra Jet 429-4V V8 was the street version of the Boss 429 racing engine as stated in the original factory Mercury dealership brochure that’s included. It is fully documented with the original Ford (Lois Eminger) Invoice and Elite Marti Report both of which are included. This authentic car was the product of a high level rotisserie restoration and the attention to detail is evident throughout. This vehicle’s order type was an “A Plan Vehicle” which meant it was ordered by an employee of Ford or the selling dealership which in this case was Sesi Lincoln Mercury located in Ypsilanti, MI. It was ordered on September 23, 1969 as a 1970 Mercury Cyclone GT 2-door hardtop with a Competition Yellow exterior and Black Comfortweave Vinyl Hi-Back Bucket Seats interior. From the information gathered this car only had 15,000 original miles prior to the nut and bolt rotisserie restoration which was completed in 2020. The previous and current title states actual mileage. MS CLASSIC CARS purchased the car in July of 2021 and sold the car in February of 2022 to a previous customer who is avid classic car collector. This vehicle was on display in his museum until MS CLASSIC CARS purchased the car back in March of 2023.
The exterior of this car is in absolutely gorgeous condition throughout. It appears like a sleeper with it quiet demeanor but don’t be fooled. Some of the meanest Muscle Cars from the 60’s and 70’s looked like sleepers but were indeed high performance street machines. From the information gathered it retains all of its original sheet metal. The body is laser straight with great panel fitment. The overall bodywork is truly remarkable. The hood, doors and trunk lid close very nicely. The car was re-finished in its original color of Competition Yellow paint, Ford #3470-A. The paint work is spectacular to say the least. It was recently detailed to a brilliant show quality shine by the team at MS CLASSC CARS. The Ram Air induction hood, dual racing mirrors, concealed headlights, black lower body-side painted and Cyclone GT 429 emblems give it the perfect amount of muscle car appearance. The wheels have factory hub caps, bright trim rings and are wrapped with B.F. Goodrich Silvertown G78-14 whitewall tires.
The interior of this is car in beautiful condition throughout. When you open the driver’s door and slide into the spacious cabin it feels like its 1970 all over again. The black comfortweave vinyl interior is mostly original and truly remarkable considering. It appears to be all original with exception of the carpeting and a few miscellaneous items. The Hi-back bucket seats are still firm and very comfortable. The seat belts still retain all the original date coded tags. The door panels are outfitted with the factory Cyclone badging. The rim-blow sport steering wheel is in front of the 140-mph speedometer. The 8000-rpm tachometer, oil pressure, engine temperature and ammeter gauges are recessed individually into the dash. This design and the Hurst shifter continue the muscle car appearance in the cabin. It sports a new set of black carpeted floor mats with the words Cyclone on them. Everything in the interior is in working order.
The engine compartment is highly detailed with many correct parts throughout. The car is powered by the original matching numbers 429 Super Cobra Jet V8 engine that was factory rated at 375HP. MS CLASSIC CARS had this engine completely rebuilt by NATS Engines in Seekonk, MA. The decision was made at the time of the rebuild to use higher performance parts for better reliability and increased horsepower. The engine was bored .80 over and stroked to a 533ci. It has the factory intake and Holley carburetor #D00F-9210-N. The engine is dressed with the factory Ram Air Induction which is in working order. The engine dyno tested wit with 527 horsepower and 599 Ft-Lbs. of torque. The engine breathes through the factory manifolds and correct style reproduction dual exhaust system with chrome tips that sounds awesome! Everything in the engine compartment has been restored or replaced. The engine is coupled to original matching numbers 4-speed transmission with factory Hurst shifter. The power is transferred to the original “Drag Pak” 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle.
The undercarriage is also highly detailed throughout with many correct parts.

I love this cyclone! Many people seem to not care for the yellow paint but I personally think it is great. A definite positive for a yellow car is that it sticks out on the road like a soar thumb and if I'm not mistaken, yellow cars are less likely to be in accidents due to their undeniable presence on the road because everybody sees it. This cyclone gt is rarely ever seen anymore. There just isn't many remaining in this good of shape. The sound of that 429 is like music to my ears.

Very nice Cyclone! I know what you mean about the bigger cars riding smooth. I have a 1972 Gran Torino Sport 4spd 351CJ, and it rides so smooth. The Cyclone has always been one of my dream cars and yes, you hardly ever see them at even car shows.

I used to own the same car, did you know the engine is 4bolt main, and it has a factory 3200 rpm Stahl converter. With proper carb, mild cam, good tune your easily over 400hp. Those cleavelands breath like a big block. Keep her and take great care. A perfect car of luxury and speed.

LOVE IT ! Only thing I'd change is the rear end gears to 3.25 to 1. A huge torquey 533 ci V8 does not want to be spinning a 3000 at just 60 mph. Should still pull strongly from 2500 !!
@PatandDoopypoopy
@PatandDoopypoopy Жыл бұрын
Overall it might be faster with a taller gear in it. It would be able to use the torque curve longer. Five hundred horse power is nothing these days. However six hundred pounds of torque is epic. Especially naturally aspirated. Who would expect that. Nobody.😅😅😅

true story. In 1977 I was working for the CNR railroad and making good money. I was single and a drinker. I bought a Baby Blue 1971 mercury Cyclone form a used car lot in saskatoon sask for $1800 bucks. It had a 429 4 speed and all the goodies. Man did it go !! You could blaze the bake tires with NO effort and easily go 120 MPH. Sadly.... It breaks my heart to tell the rest of the story.......I headed home from the job sight on friday. the whole crew had been drinking....I hit the ditch at 80mph and demolished the under side of the car. Bent wheels, tore off the drive shaft ECT. we didnt get hurt but the car was Done. Had it for only 4 days. I soooooo wished I still had it. But those were the days,...muscle cars all over the place and cheap to buy.

Respectfully speaking. I would’ve liked a complete walk around of the car to include the engine compartment. As far as what I can see of the car, I love the idea of a V8 and a stick shift. However, that steering looks horrible. It looks like you’re driving an old truck. You know, 3 on a tree.

My second cousin bought a new one, late in 69, New Years night 1970, he hit a large popular tree, right side They estimated his speed at 140 at Impact! Limbs as big as my arm snapped out of the top of the tree. The 429 came out of the car and traveled 30 feet and hit a house. It to this day is the worst torn up car I ever saw. There was a pile of pieces at the salvage yard. The only thing I saw still in tack was the spare tire bolted to the trunk floor! Unfortunately, my cousin was picked up in pieces also!!! He was racing a mustang on a country road. It has been a stern reminder to me all my life. I'm 69 now.

If you have eyes to see. One can see the degeneration of American vehicles, architecture, fashion, interior design from the 70s to 2000s. From being sleek, mean, and possessing unique flare amongst a myriad of different models from each company; we now have 1-3 models per company that are easily damaged, more expensive in price/maintenance, and ugly. Some people think this is purely for profit. I know the negation of our once Great Nation is nearing its climax. This is a small example of what we once were.

What I couldn't understand back in the muscle car wars all the big block Fords were only pushing 350 to 375 hp when just a small block 350 had about the same hp and torque ratings...Now I know all the manufacturers underrated those specs but a big block Chevy had so much more hp and torque... As much as 450 and that was underrated

@hendo337 5 ай бұрын
With 600tq and 527hp, this is probably a case where the car might actually be quicker with a wide ratio top loader and a 3.00 or even a 2.73 axle ratio, if it's a huge stroker with everything else on top factory with a mild cam, all the power must be down low and it probably swings to the top of the tach too quick and gets to where it's out of breath too soon, 3.91 is probably too short of gears for on the highway too. It would probably swing the tach with similar enthusiasm and generate more mph with a taller gear, like a turbo diesel truck.

I had a 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7… A big yellow banana boat lol.. It had a 460 in it I believe… One of the best riding vehicles I’ve ever owned.. The interior was absolutely mint and the whole car looked new… I should’ve never ever, ever sold that vehicle!! I’m actually a Chevy guy, but love all cars, particularly the older ones.. I kick myself everytime I think about it.. it wasn’t a hot rod, but it certainly wasn’t slow, especially for its size.. This was in the early 90s.. I’m sure that car must still be around somewhere today running just fine..

I love those cyclones,My Dad bought a 70 with the drag pack in 1974,It had been hit in the back He bought it at an insurance auction for $350 with the intention of using the undamaged parts on a customers 70 cyclone..BUT..my mom totaled the 72 Torino wagon..Dad had zero money,his shop truck and Ford F250 wrecker. So he had to get a rear clip for the 70 cyclone he got it all fixed and painted...He HATED the looks of the Cyclone especially the Grill...he and my mom called it a 'Cyclops' instead of Cyclone because of that weird looking grill center. But he loved how it rode,it was comfy spacious and nasty FAST!! i remember riding in it and he would hammer the gas and rip thru the gears and it was insane!! I wish he couldve kept it but he got an offer for the car and he sold it..That really bothered him but he needed the cash he got back what he had in it and a pretty good profit

Well, seeing, this thang took me back to my early childhood. Dad's 70 Cyclone GT was identical to this except the engine. It was a 351 4V 4-speed Cleveland car. I was very sad the day it went bye-bye!

As a guy that has 3 1971 Torino GT’s I have always loved the Cyclones. Essentially, Mercury’s version of the Torino. Those Drag Packs are bad to the 🦴 I like the instrument cluster in the passenger dash.

Thanks for posting. This really brings back memories of me. In the late 80's I had a 71 Cyclone GT. It was two tone green and had the 351 Cleveland with a C4 auto. I used to think it was just the Cyclone Spoilers that got the 429, but I see that was not actually the case. I always loved the dash on these cars with the gauges across the dash canted toward the driver. Mine also had those vacuum hide away headlights. The hoses would leak and by morning the car would look like it was high, as the headlight covers would creep up overnight as vacuum was lost in the system. Nice example. Thanks again for posting!

Hey bro .. My very dear friend has one but I'm sure he's rolling in his grave that someone would choose that color combo then go ahead and compound the insult with white walls OMG Ole Henry Ford is surely rolling in his grave as well ...So a Chevelle isn't the same sized car as the Goat ? or the 442 Or the Buick GS ? and it's so funny watching you shift that car from 2 to 3 because I can close my eye's and see my good friend punching the dash and breaking the knobs off when his BS Hurst "T" handle came loose in fact he nearly broke his wrist .. well the next time I was in that car it had a white H pattern ball ..

Guy sounds like a Rhode Islander. I was born there and recognize a southern New England accent anywhere plus garbage roads. Lol. I have always been a Mercury guy and owned several of the 70-71 body style but never a big block. So very cool. I now live in Arizona and love how the vehicles here have zero body rot.

Impressive. Finally. A true muscle car that looks nondescript. And...Will leave everything else standing in awe. Right in its tracks. I need one as a backup ride. When my 2000 Ford Excursion XLT 6.8L Triton V10 is down. With computer issues. You have proven that computers And. Mechanics. DO NOT MIX. Thank you for the kick assed test ride. I'm addicted for more 😊

I worked at NAPA up the road for some years. I would bring parts to Wayne after hours as a way of helping out. Always great stuff in those buildings

My dad bought a 70 Cyclone GT 429scj in 74 .1976 I bought it from him I still have it it is so much fun to drive. Suspension is stiff makes sharp curves easily as long as there are no holes in the road.

Fantastic ride-a-long. I'm a Poncho fan from day 1, but cars like this can't be denied. Great motor, top-loader, and I agree with the big car ride. Also loved the fact you beat on it, when it counted. Could feel the tires just don't like that motor. Wish you knew the rear gear. 3K, @ 60, sounds like only 3.50s. Can't imagine a set of 3.90s, or lower. Definitely needs slicks. By the way, New Bedford, or Fall river? Brocktonian myself. Thanks for the ride.

Just WOW...amazing to hear that smooth, quiet lifter , forged piston precision with that Super Cobra Jet Drag Pack drivetrain. Reminds me a bit of my brothers 71 Boss 351 he had in the 80s, it was all BOSS 351 drivetrain - but sadly it only had a standard 4 BBL Cleveland - as the original motor was lost racing. TO have that bored 429 in that car would have been a death sentence for us snot nosed punks ....lol!
