My brother in law got out of the service and went to work for a mercury dealership in western NY and he ordered that exact car for himself as a reward for making it out of Vietnam. I remember some scary rides in that car! Most beautiful car I ever saw IMO! 428 cj 4 speed car. Drag raced it at Niagara a few times. Sold the car when he got married and became a Dad.

I had a '69 Cyclone CJ in the mid/late 80's. White with burgundy interior. Sadly the 428CJ was long gone by the time I got my hands on it. It did have a 429 in its place so it was still a really fun car to drive. Well, it was fun when the power steering system had fluid in it. Trying to turn the thing with a small Grant steering wheel when the power steering wasn't working was the opposite of fun. I remember the trunk being literally HUGE once you got past that little trunk lid. One of a few cars I still kick myself for selling.

I have a factory black '69 Cyclone CJ here. Never a dent, never any rust. C6 with 3.50 T-Lok. Also, much rarer, a base '69 Montego hardtop CJ automatic. One of 20 per Marti. Seven other Cylones and Montegos, too. Great cars but parts are a beeyotch to find.

Take the 390 and bore it to a 428 CJ specks. You already have 428 CJ heads. Then slowly start buying parts and paint it the original color. One of 13. Wow! Shawn.

I bought a ‘69 Cyclone 428 CJ “Q” code with a BUNCH of extra spare parts for $200.00 years ago. Driveline was gone - had a Mustang rear end. Very straight body with good glass. Bench seat with column shift C6. Never found the time to do anything with it. Sold it for a grand and the spares for maybe another few hundred bucks. I also used to have a ‘66 Cyclone GT with the 390 and bucket seats and floor shift C6. Loved that car. Just subscribed!

@@ruachadam5227 Sounds familiar! I bought mine in ‘75 for $500.00 and it had 47K miles on it. Sold it in ‘79 or thereabouts during the OPEC oil embargo for $400.00. It had the chrome valve covers that said “390 Cyclone GT” on them. I hear that those were rare. Mine was “Cardinal Red” and I ended up painting it black.

I passed on a similar Cyclone up at Calvin Wests around 1985. I believe it was a 429. I wasn't into anything other than GM at the time. The Cyclone was especially hideous looking to me then. Calvin was the largest Junkyard in Northern Maine close to a B-52 Air force Base. He had tons of vintage vehicles. RIP Calvin.

For me, the quickest way to tell if an engine is an FE is to look for the mating surfaces break between the intake and the heads. They’re known as “half-heads” because the head is significantly narrower than most other heads, with the intake manifold taking up where that part of a normal head would be. This effectively makes the intake ports on the heads very short, which in turn means as less iron to remove when porting them during testing. They would generally use an aluminum intake manifold for flow testing on the bench and the track, and aluminum is much easier to grind than iron. It’s an easy swap, and you can remove either the head or the intake without removing the other. Anyway, that break you see where it would usually be all head, but that part of the intake is covered by the valve cover, which makes part of the intake also part of the head. For any of you who have ported heads, imagine how much more effectively you could massage the inside radius of the port when it’s half as deep and that much easier to get to. It just opens up a whole new world of ease of experimentation. Once they had a shape they liked, they’d transfer that to the iron mold for regular production cars. I think that’s one of the coolest things ever.
@LostandFoundClassics

It's not so much that it needed to be Identified as an FE but rather the engine needed to be Identified as a 428cj or not.

I was 16 in 68 and lived in small eastern town. Like most small towns , a few guys folks had money and they had built vettes , buick gs, etc. Mopar wasnt quite as snooty. There was outcast guy from less healed family with a 68 cyclone "dog" that couldnt be touched , even by local 427, hemis/ 440 and 455gs. He never told what it had , but it could jump beer cans or do endless burnouts until popping both tires. We heard he was related to Cale/ Leroy Yarborough , and the motor came from them. Never saw him race on strip, but we usually went to nationals, and this car was right there for its class.. .

My dad brought one of these back in the late '70's. It was white, original 428 CJ markings on the quarters, I never took to it, I was collecting CJ Mustangs. Sold in Western Washington 40 years ago. Didn't realize they were that rare. It may have been SCJ, the motor in it was possibly a 390, they didn't change the flywheel, so it had a personality, I switched out the 3rd member, according to the door tag and interesting the tag it was a 350 limited slip but had 430. Just checking. JPK REEEEEEEEE

@LostandFoundClassics 10 ай бұрын
That's awesome! Sadly, this ended up being a 390 engine with the CJ missing even though it's an original 428cj car. These weren't very popular back in the day due to their size thus it ends up making them rare today. I've since passed this off to the new owner due to the severe structural damage under the car from a previous accident that caused it to be parked before I purchased it.

I see that Cyclone was built at Lorain Assembly Plant in Lorain,Ohio......Lorain Assembly was the place to work at back in the "60s-"70s if you loved midsize Ford and Mercury performance cars......Lorain Assembly built cars that weren't supposed to get built or what the so called "experts" would call none of none..But they were built....Lorain Assembly built all of the "69 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler IIs.....In 1969 Lorain Assembly was getting ready to build the Cyclones and Torinos with the "Boss 429" in them but that asshole Bunkie Knudsen vetoed that and put it in the Mustang instead.....But a few "test mule" examples were built at Lorain and supposedly destroyed......Anyways,good save.👍👍👍

Great question! YES! The original owner is currently ill. I picked up the car from his Nephew who is handling his estate. According to his Nephew, there is another house about 2 hours away that has a yard full of Ford parts, engines, and projects. He's not ready to let anyone in there yet but told me he is going to text me pictures in the near future because I was interested in what other engines many be laying around. I hope the 428 is sitting there somewhere. His Uncle was a mechanic. Even if I don't find the 428, there may be other great finds on the property. Thanks for commenting, John

Hi Nathan, Indeed! They are very rare. So Rare, even as a 60s Mustang guy I didn't even know they existed before buying this one. According to Marti, only 693 Cyclone CJs Came with a 4 speed manual trans and out of those, mot where bucket seat console cars. This car is a stripped down model without power steering or any creature comforts. It was purchased for racing and is only 1 of 13. When I took the back seat out this week, I found the rear seatbelts still have the plastic wrapping on them and the rear seat is like no one has ever sat on it. The Maroon color makes it even more interesting since most where white or black. Sadly, someone spray painted this car. But the original paint is still in the door jambs. It's my understanding that the 1968 and 1969 Fairlane and Torino undercarriage, suspension, and overall unibody is the same. In addition, the outer body panels are shared with the Montego. This one is a little more than I can chew at this point in time so I cleaned it up and it's currently for sale. I will most likely have it on eBay here in a week or so if someone local doesn't buy it. Since creating the video, I verified the transmission is the original as well as the 7 blade 428 Cobra Jet fan and accessories in addition to the Exhaust Manifolds and Cylinder heads. Blessings, John

It's actually not that hard. The 428 CJ was only a 68-70 engine. The majority of them are correctly date coded for 1969. The bigger issue is the VIN stamp on the back of the block. Only the original engine will have it. However, the previous owner said his uncle originally owned the car and has a bunch of old Ford engines laying around. It may be in the yard somewhere and I plan on going back in the future. But, it's a long drive to be wrong.

Those daytonas are superior aerodynamically. So those torinos/cyclones must have been running more power to hit 225.

Good observation. The Torinos and Cyclones setup for NASCAR racing had the BOSS 429 engine which was Ford's Hemi. After Ford continually beat Dodge with the BOSS 429 drivetrain, NASCAR outlawed the HEMI in NASCAR. Looking at the Cyclone in this video, it is the street version. The NASCAR version came with a cone shape nose on it like the daytona. Just like how Dodge put the cone noses on the Charger to make the Daytona.

Actually the winged Mopar were not more aerodynamic.

@@joefell7845 As quoted by donnie allison "The back end would lift up in the corners" or hed call it a brick at high speeds. thats why richard liked the superbird, it would stay stable at higher speeds. What killed the winged cars were the cooling issues among other things but chrysler went the aero route because they couldnt compete with fords power. it makes sense when you consider that ford was and still is a powerhouse in racing.
