Back 40 yrs, I had the same 70 SS but with the 402 "396". Most fun car ever! It was just a beat down used car then, I repaired the trans and replaced the stolen, missing parts and made a daily driver out of it. Parked it when the insurance guys put coverage in the unobtanium mode! Finally sold it because wife raised so much static, just before the prices took off! Should have kept the car and found a better partner! Damn, I still miss that beast!

I was lucky enough to find two original no modifications LS6 Chevelles in the early 80s both with less than 30.000 miles on them for under 3 grand apiece. They are both in the top 5 of my auto collection.

@@jeffrey4547 ok first off woah man didn’t need to read an essay response this ain’t English 101 at the local community college. Now I will politely tell you again the 454 in 1970 came as an LS5 or the more horsepower LS6 in which both were derived from the 427 big block and are both also big blocks themselves Now in 1970 you could get a LS7 that was like 500 horse but it was a crate engine. I don’t know if you are confused about the small block ls6 that is in the early 2000s z06 Corvette or what. Also I got a 1980 suburban with a built 454 and Dana 60 upfront with 14 bolt rear and a 1982 Toyota pickup 4x4 as the daily driver and a few other projects too much to list

Biggest problem with watching show-clips like this on the old muscle is the problem of being old enough to have been there the first time, and knowing what the TRUTH was, versus what the shows tell you. It wasn't unleaded fuel that killed the LS6, it was congressional limits on power and musclecar designs. In 1971, the threat was the insurance industry (many top end cars were absolutely uninsurable for most people), and we were entering the 1st OPEC embargo (gas went WAY up in price). In '69, I saw a gas price war on the block near our house of $0.25 per gallon for 101 octane fuel. In 1971, fuel had gone to $0.42 a gallon, more in some places. A lot of things killed the super muscle cars, but unleaded was a Jimmy Carter deal, not a 1971 deal.

Hendrickson Runner Amen to that man. People bitch and moan about MPG. At 19 years old, the smallest engine I’ve ever had is the 350 rocket 4bbl in my 72 Cutlass Supreme. My daily driver is an 88 F350 with a 460. Having the 5 speed stick with overdrive makes it the first vehicle with overdrive I’ve owned. Since I’ve never had a vehicle that got over 11 mpg, I just Budget for it and consider it normal.

I stuffed a heavily modified LS6 into a 1968 Firebird, actually a 468, offenhauser dual quad 360 tunnel ram 2 780 holley carbs. M-22 4 speed and the factory 10 bolt posi held up even with slicks. Retired undefeated, even smoked a Honda 750 3 times in a row. Back in the early 80s muscle cars and parts were plentiful, and relatively cheap. The baddest machine I ever sat my butt into. I flipped it end over end, they say 7 times. It's just by the grace of God I'm still here. That 468 was wicked. The Chevelle LS6 properly tuned with good tires were plain badass in the right hands. @@justsumguy2u Hemis were too temperamental. Miss a gear and over rev, then it was time to run the lash. LS6s would cruise without a tantrum if over revved. Biggest issue was the timing chain. Big blocks in those days needed to have the timing chain replaced at about 70k miles to remain low maintenance. Headers, stagger jetting and some extra initial timing would give you 500 hp. I'm thinking enough sticky rear tire to have traction (9-10" wide or so?) and we're into the 4's 0-60 and the 12s in the 1/4. Someone could have put modified wheels and tires on this thing and won every drag race they competed in on better traction alone. 5.3 sec to 60 in 1968 from the Hurst Olds. And that's half-spinning the tires all the way to 30mph at least.

A mentor of mine had one of these and raced it, GM ran the numbers at a lower rpm to show low HP for insurance purposes. If you installed aftermarket headers and left them uncorked it made nearly 600HP higher up the rpm range. I owned and raced a 70 1/2 Z/28 I put a BB in which almost everyone was going to at the time. 4/56s and 500+ HP was hell on radial tires but I did a fair amount of drifting around town 40 years ago. The worst oversight ever is equipping the LS6 with skinny Polyglass tires from the factory. Just pulling away from any stoplight could induce wheelspin without trying....and forget about it if it's raining that day....

was there a pontiac ram air 5 engine?
@michellegrone713110 жыл бұрын
ericou812 no, not that i know of, it stopped at R.A-4.... the only diff. between a R.A-3 n a R.A-4 is the CAM.
@ericou81210 жыл бұрын
thought i read somewhere ram air 5 was a crate motor,not put into cars at factory
@kaydentrujillo51539 жыл бұрын
ericou812 It was never put into a regular production, but Chevy offered aftermarket parts that were LS7, like intake manifolds and stuff.

I think Pontiac 455 put out the most torque when they compared the GM big blocks of that size. Of course you can get lots of torque from a Cadillac 500 ci.
