I suggest getting a Torque Multiplier tool; it works for the rear axle nuts and the gland nuts on VWs. It multiplies the torque you give it by 9 times and tightening and loosening those is a cinch. Given that you have a few VWs it might be a good investment. I recall doing a set of those axles back in the ‘80’s and I did exactly what you did; just swapped the boots and basically cleaned the OEM CV joints and re greased them. Good as new. Nowadays apart from used OEM most of what you can get new is Chinesium stuff 🤮. OEM is infinitely better. Re the Bowden tube you give it the little curve with spacers or washers; I believe it’s in the Bentley service manual. The curve on the Bowden tube prevents clutch chatter. The beeswax is a great idea. Also, I suggest swapping the flimsy ground strap with a heavy gauge battery cable. I found a 12” unit at O Reillys.

@@vayabroder729 All great ideas. Yeah when I get working steady this spring I’m going to buy one of those torque multipliers.

@@OkFixer Just so you know, those torque multipliers tool, don't work to well on removing rusty, seized axle nuts. I had to use 36mm 3/4 socket/breaker bar with a 8 ft pipe. Been there, done that.

I don't remember having a hard time, replacing the boots on the axles when I did mine years ago. Those are real tight compared to mine.

I did that too back in the ‘80’s; reconditioned the axles by taking them apart, changing the boots and cleaned and regreased the CV joints. Fun times. Now I have a swingaxle car and those axle end seals are a pain in the neck.

@@vintage76vipergreenBeetle They are tight, but are correct. I’m also getting weaker ha ha ha

@@OkFixer I don't think you're that weak. Looks like the boot axle hole diameter is a lot smaller than it should be. I hope it doesn't rip once the warm weather shows up in OK.

What a pretty transmission. Wow learned allot Thanks buddy. Hey, I made my own fan cowling vent connector strap, and it works really well. Video will be out soon. Speaking of starters, I don't have a 6v yet for testing this old guy so that's on my list yet. Can't wait to fire this up for the first time. pretty exciting but not as exciting as your last one. Ha-ha that was so cool see the valve covers blow off.

@@TimsWorkshopTJY I think you’re up in Washington or? So I don’t know anyone up there who sells VW parts. But there is a guy who is down here. You can look him up on the samba. Bryan Wilson is his name. He has a bunch of 40 hp stuff. I’ll bet he has 6 volt starters. Expensive to ship I’ll bet.

Ebay sells them for 59 bucks and can get my money back if they don't send it or it doesn't work

First time seeing someone apply Beeswax on a vw transmission.

I heard that somewhere. Being porous, beeswax when heated seeps into the metal. I thought it better than paint. Probably do my next engine the same way.
