1971 Dodge Hemi Charger Super Bee drag race 1967 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport 427.
First car is a 1971 Dodge Hemi Charger. The other a 1967 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport. The '71 Hemi Charger has a 426 Hemi V8, and the Impala SS has a 427 V8. The '67 Chevy Impala was rated 385 horsepower, while the 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee Hemi was rated 425 horsepower. The Hemi Charger has a 3-speed automatic transmission (TorqueFlite). The Impala has a 4-speed manual. Rear gearing on the Chevy Impala SS427 is a 4.56, and it's a 4.10 set in the Hemi Charger. Curb weight for the 1967 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport 427 is 4103 pounds, and the 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee hemi is 3979 pounds. There were only 13 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bees equipped with a hemi and an automatic transmission. There were over 73,000 Impala Super Sports made in 1967 with the V8. In December 1970 Motor Trend tested a 1971 hemi Charger and it ran 0-60 in 5.7 seconds and the quarter mile in 13.73 seconds @ 104 mph. The Impala SS427 was tested by Car Life in May of 1967, and with an automatic transmission and 3.07 rear gears it ran 0-60 in 8.4 seconds and the quarter mile in 15.75 seconds @ 86.5 mph.

This is one of the best and most evenly matched races I've seen in a long time. I a pretty sure that the Chevy is geared a little too low and if it had a little higher gear ratio it would have done even better. I think 4.10 gears would be better for the Impala. The opar is probably as well geared as could be expected. Good stuff!

When I was young and dumb and full of cum I bought the best of what I could afford and tried to make them all better. I usually succeeded most of the time, but have come across some real lemons also. I am looking for my last muscle car now. If I can find a half assed Galaxie 500, first generation or a Chevelle (Malibu) I am going to build my last one, and probably my best one. I used to be a stick shift aficionado, but if it's your only car and you drive it a lot, shifting EVERY GEAR, EVERY TIME can grow wearisome after a few years. Having been around then, and owning 2 396 chevelles, a 375 hp and a 360 hp I want to agree with you. Back then low 14's pure stock was fast. However a rebuilt engine with matched valve springs, the .030 - .060 overbore, Jetting a carb with DYNO and O2 sensors instead of popping plugs and checking for shades of gray, and finally eliminating point bounce with electronic ignition makes these engines different. Add modern lubricants to the engine and drive train and I can see a .7 - 1.0 ET gain and 6-8 mph easily. Of course I doubt if these tracks ask an owner to pull a plug so they can CC check engines.

Hard to beat a good automatic transmission. I also learned from hotrodder/youtuber "Uncle Tony's Garage" that all the Mopar muscle cars had a traction advantage because Chrysler engineers placed the rear axle FORWARD of the center point of the leaf springs. They discovered it really aids in traction off the line. All the other American auto makers placed their axles at the center of the leaf springs, resulting in traction issues. And the rules don't allow them to use aftermarket traction aids. This is why you often see the Mopars get the jump at the tree. ( with everything else considered equal such as reaction times)

@@classicgalactica5879 What the excuse for so few Hemis ever being produced? They were the least reliable of all the MOPAR engines, most guys opted for the better 440 or 383. When you make payments, shit matters. I knew a kid who was a big Ford guy, but when he bought a new truck he bought a Chevy. I called him on it and he said he had to pay for this one, not his dad.

Being an old fart, I owned a new 67 Impala SS. It had the 365 HP version 396 and 4 speed. I know what a 4 speed vs an automatic transmission of that time is all about. A four speed with otherwise equal cars would blow the doors off of an automatic. The difference here is the curb weight and the fewer Chevy horses. The 427 in this Impala was the weakest 427 Chevrolet produced. It also has rear end gearing that kills top end speed. Both are great classic muscle cars, but I would try to relive my youth in the Chevy. Beside that, a four speed is just a whole lot cooler than a three speed automatic.

I thought the impala with the 4 speed would have an edge even with less HP, it almost took the 1st run ! my 1st car was the family 67 fastback impala , only a 283 small block , but i rejected it for a 70 mach 1 mustang 351 Cleveland v8 4 speed ! I really loved the family car , later i sold the totally uncomfortable mustang ! , it was fast but i wanted now a 67 fastback impala , all i found were rust buckets , but i ended up getting a 69 charger 383 ! it reminded me of the impala somewhat ! I'm shocked a fully loaded bb ss impala weighs 4100 lbs ! i thought it would be less , sounds like the weight of a 70 chevel bb car ? The 71 and up chargers were the cheap chargers, a 66-70 chargers went for around 1000-1500, in the 80's the 71 and up could be had for 300-500 used. This one is super rare and with the hemi ! anyone wouldn't mind having it over a 440 70 charger RT !, the last 2 chargers i owned were 70 RT's , both at the same time ! nowadays owning a muscle car in NYC is cruse only expesive storage , grandpa rides ! Your lucky if you got a garage and a yard to park one .
