Thanks for making this video! I have a 1971 25hp and I noticed a hose that is out of place. It runs from the top cylinder to the crankcase. Mine has an individual hose from each that go no where (and are always leaking). I see now that it should be a return from the top cylinder to the crankcase. I doubt it'll make a huge difference but it will keep all the extra oil from spewing inside the cover!

Hey. Yes, it will Save Your Motor! If its the hose I'm thinking of than its the oiler hose to oil the top crankshaft bearings. Very Important to keep the bearing oiled or it will burn up and you'll need to rebuild. On this motor its painted blue so kind of hard to see. the black hose is from the manifold to the side cover. @thisoldoutboard, I have a 1982 Johnson 25hp electric start tiller. It runs fine in neutral, however when I shift into forward or reverse it jerks badly and dies. Any thoughts on what is going on?

Hey. So you drop it in gear and it doesn't want to run. Unfortunately there is no one answer. In a case like that I would go back to the basics. Fuel system, carb smokin clean, low speed and high speed circuits spotless. Fuel pump pumping. Tank, fuel lines all, no air leaks. Ignition, super strong spark and timing set right on cam and follower. Good even compression. What may seem like a fuel issue could be an ignition problem and vice versa. You just have to go through and eliminate the most common problems with each system until you narrow it down. It could even be a bad gearcase dragging the powerhead down. Take your time, hopefully, most likely its something simple. Try running it on one cylinder at a time, like its two separate motors. That can help narrow things down to one cylinder like a bad coil. If no real change after you go through it, could be a bad charge coil under the flywheel or even a bad powepack. So you see what I mean, there never is one answer for these things. And never assume anything. Thanks

Hey. Thanks. RPMS at WOT are 5500. Not sure exactly what you mean by , " if it s not run in high rpm". But if your not hitting top speed/rpms at wot I would go back to basics and start with a tune up, points, plugs, condensers, carb cleaning High Speed Orifice/Jet. If you have already done all that then its becomes a process of elimination, fuel system, ignition, ect. Don't assume anything! Double check everything! Thanks again. Stay tuned !

I have the same engine , i am trting to figure out why it won't shift into shift & low positions. It will start perfect and runs but just won't shift into low or shift ..

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I dont understand what you mean by shift and low positions. There's foreword, neutral and reverse. You may have a bad gearcase or the shift linkage is disconnected. Check the oil in the gearcase and the shift shaft linkage connection inside the exhaust housing behind the cover plate, part # 13 in the schematic. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1972&hp=25&model=25R72R&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Exhaust+Housing. If the gearcase is bad check ebay for a good used one. Curiuos to know what you find out. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

What do you do about color matching with that paint? It looks very close to Evinrude blue... It would be great to find some color charts that show Napa paint colors to match OMC colors from the 70s...

What is the best gas to oil mix for these engines

50:1, 2.56 ounces oil to 1 gallon gas. most people just round it off at 3 ounces oil. be sure and use outboard 2 stroke oil and not the stuff you put in your weed whacker !

Hey buddy i need your help agian. I bought this 25hp and i got it running but it it fart alot. I have to pump the choke a few time to get it run smooth. Start to fart or pop. ... it has smooth came out drom the flywheel. I was think could it be the top seal. Cuzing rhis

hey. yes, could be sucking to much air through the seal and closing the choke is cutting off some air. pull the fly wheel and ignition and replace the seal

The rebuild The reason I ask is because I purchased a 1974Johnson seahorse 25hp And my compression is at 65 So I am sure I’m going to have to do a lot of work and was wondering how much you had to put in yours.

@@blakeatchison3738 Hey. This Old Outboard didn't need a rebuild, I put some new gaskets, thermostat, coils, just to get er up and running. At the time it probably cost me around $100 or so.
