It's funny that you put this video up now. I've got a '72 MGB restoration in. Right now I'm making a convertible top out of stayfast, but I also have to do an interior for it. Customer bought cheapie seats and you guessed it, pattern is not right for the seat frame/foam. It's better to just spend the money up front and have a shop do it the right way the first time. People see the hourly rate, what do they think that means? Oh and mineral spirits.

Hello again Richard. You were using mineral spirits to clean off the grease pencil marks and glue over spray. And guys can get one of those little picks that you used to pull the top thread through to the back at Dollartree. $1.25 each. They also have nice little storage boxes for bobbins, etc. In the hobby section of the store. I want to mention that one of your techniques that I am happy that I copied is that when you use a scissors you cut straight lines. I have fount that that is important because those cut lines are a good guide when sewing. That makes straight seams too. Thanks again. I am making my own patterns for the back seat of my '39 Chevy so this is a good video for me. I still don't dare to do a French seam though. Fred.

There are a lot of variables here. I make pre-made covers for a very specific vehicle, and I have to specify that the customer must use all new foam. If the foam is 35 years old it is deformed and degraded, and the covers will never fit right.

Just wondering about some of your supplies. I am going to get a walking foot machine and start doing upholstery. Do you use or recommend bonded thread? What size thread do you prefer? Also, what length scissors do you recommend? Scissors are also available in curved and non curved. Is there any advantage to curved for seeing or cutting straight? I know you use what I consider basic things and that is sensible. My dad used whatever was available and the cheaper the better. I am more concerned about the thread. I saw a video you did not too long ago or maybe I went through the list and chose it, about answering viewers questions you get all the time. I do not remember thread being mentioned. Honest comment about the seats you reupholstered? I think the seats are probably more valuable than the entire car. Very nice and just seeing you do each step is a help to a beginner. Thanks.
@oldschoolautoupholstery9 ай бұрын
Hello 4, I love hearing good news like this. I am so happy you are getting started. Thread is mentioned in several of my videos. I use bonded nylon and polyester T-92 thread for everything. Scissor length is only important for comfort. I have only used strait scissors. What i think is important is to not go cheap on my customers. I use only the best materials. Man, I love your videos! When you're patterning how to you measure for placing listing on the bottom when you dont have good original upholstery to copy? I feel like everyone hides their trick for this.
@oldschoolautoupholstery5 ай бұрын
Hello Nova, Thank you so much for saying so. Well, Standard size for listing is 1 1/4" wide. If I do need listing I just sew it on. No measuring necessary. Please keep liking and watching!
@novanogo075 ай бұрын
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Thanks for the response! So when you pattern do you just include the 1 1/4 of the listing into the length of the box you pattern? Or is it that the listing does not have a particular attaching point and is less important than I'm making it?
@oldschoolautoupholstery5 ай бұрын
@@novanogo07 Hello Nova, The listing for inserts would be added to the sewn edge. Just as listing for the mounting edge of the seat bottoms on most cars would be added to the edge of the vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!

@@oldschoolautoupholstery Youre so awesome for the responses! I guess im not asking your technique clearly. Are you test fitting the seat bottom cover, then marking where to sew the listing, or are you premeasuring while you're patterning? Ive only made patterns from existing seat covers so im trying to figure out the best way to do it when I need to do a full custom cover. Im worried im not going to get the 'preload' on the listing wrong and have a saggy or too snug cover.
@oldschoolautoupholstery5 ай бұрын
@@novanogo07 Hello Nova, Prefitting a cover is a good way to figure out what to do next. Duplicating what it had before is the easiest way to do it. Richard, another great video! I was wondering about the “plastic bag” under the headrest cover. I thought you were going to pull it out. Also, i would like to see how you sewed the elastic for the pouches. Do you Just stretch it while sewing? Thanks!
@oldschoolautoupholstery9 ай бұрын
Hello Tryan, You are so welcome! Thank you so much for saying so. The plastic back a a very common thing under covers. The manufacturer had this bag under their headrest. I just reused it. First off a 64 MGB did not have factory headrests and the kit your customer bought would not be for a 64since it has cut outs for headrests. The seats would have been from a later model if it has headrests.
